I've also received a mail regarding the extension. Seems legit.

I wonder what that means though. Does it mean that the deadlines of all the individual fellowships are also extended? Or do we just have more time to fill in the financial statement, if for some odd reason we haven't already?

Yep, just got a mail. All financial aid materials! Got a confirmation from their office too.

i'd hate to assume, but that's where my mind first went... no way to know for sure unless someone verifies with the admissions/financial aid office.

i'm in the same boat. i submitted the financial aid application immediately after my last grad school application and i have not received this email notice about the march 1 extension.

Not necessarily. It could also mean that they realized that they could get the applicant pool cut down substantially in the next week, thereby forwarding less applications to the financial aid office / fellowship committees, allowing for the decisions to be released earlier with aid info.

In short, the only thing that we'll get by trying to figure the admissions process out is stress. I'm chilling out for the next few weeks (that is, once I get those fellowship statements in!).
