InquilineKea Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I guess the problem is that there is a lot of fragmentation in the field, so none of us hang out in one place. We're trying to get something started with this proposal at Stack Exchange though: http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/37851/earth-atmospheric-and-planetary-sciences
waddle Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Among the students I know, basically none of them spend a significant amount of time in the interwebs. The most internetz-y place they frequent is probably Reddit. In my experience, the average geoscience student is more outdoorsy / extroverted than students in other fields of science with which I'm familiar. But perhaps I'm just not hanging out with the right group of people.
InquilineKea Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 Ah yes - good points about how they are more outdoorsy. I'm a computational person, so I sometimes feel a bit lonely.
Marshall Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Hm, I'm not an introvert but I'm definitely an "on the internet/gaming" kind of gal. As much as I love the outdoors.. i don't hang out at any geo forums though.
katerific Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 There is no beer on the internet. waddle 1
hope4fall2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I don't really hang out on any internet forums as such as well.. What about blogs though?? I'm sure all of us follow technical blogs.. I follow realclimate.org .. It's not really technical, but keeps me updated on the science of climate change..
katerific Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 As far as blogs go, sometimes I follow my friends' (or their friends' friends') blogs they set up for cruises, expeditions, hanging out in Antarctica, etc. They're not technical at all, but I always feel super jealous when I see them in Antarctic hot tubs or chilling with penguins. Also, there are pictures of my advisor dressed as Queen Neptune on the internet.
hope4fall2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 yeah, cruises and expeditions.. There was this blog about the DYNAMO field experiment in the Indian Ocean, designed to learn more about the MJO.. Cruises in tropical islands drive me jealous!! But I'm now too old to be going on field trips.. .. Disadvantage of taking a biiig break between undergrad and grad school..
InquilineKea Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Chilling with penguins? Really? Do they actually interact with them?
katerific Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Technically you are supposed to stay at least 20 feet away from them, but sometimes they waddle right up to you, apparently. I have a lot of friends with pictures of penguins pretty close to them. But they are absolutely not allowed on the boats, ever.
waddle Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Technically you are supposed to stay at least 20 feet away from them, but sometimes they waddle right up to you, apparently. Relevant. But they are absolutely not allowed on the boats, ever. Kitkat 1
katerific Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Penguin expert This post did not disappoint. Applause.
