I've started to see acceptances from Boulder on the results board and I was initially disappointed, thinking that I guess that means a no for me since I haven't heard, but then I noticed something bizarre. Why are several people posting that Boulder called them today, the 29th? It's still the middle of the night in Boulder. Someone says they were in a class when they found out they were accepted--unless they are abroad like me, even if they were on the east coast they would have had to have been in a class that started before 8am. I never had a class early than 8am in the entirety of my academic career.Thoughts? Anyone want to claim these acceptances and shed some light for the rest of us?

I was wondering the same thing....the late posting of those acceptances is making me question a call from a "restricted" phone number last night 9 EST that I wasn't able to answer. It's probably more wishful thinking on my part, though.

Yeah, but all of the posters say they were contacted on the 29th, not the 28th, which wouldn't square with your call yesterday. Very odd. I guess we'll just have to wait and see--patience is not one of my virtues and this process is really testing the little I have.

Eh, sorry to dampen hopes but I wouldn't read too much into the date - I've looked at the results board in the evening before and seen notifications already for the next day. So, obviously, Grad Cafe can tell the future.

Yeah, sometimes people don't pay attention to the date thing. I didn't receive a call, but I'm not that devastated. I wouldn't have accepted anyway. I'm curious about numbers, though. I think it was last year(?) when they had 102 applicants and accepted 4 because of funding issues. That's so tiny!

I posted the first of the acceptances around 4:00 on the 28th--weirdly, GradCafe autocorrected to the 29th. I received the call from Paul Youngquist, who said a cohort of 5 was accepted this year. I'm very surprised to be accepted! Good luck to you all!

Ahh, damn gradcafe autocorrect! Okay, well at least we know now. Thanks for posting rubyrunner and congrats! I see we applied to a few of the same places. What's your focus, out of curiosity? I'm interested in 20th Cent. British lit/Modernist studies.

I'm interested in 18thc Brit lit/journalism. Hope a phone call is in your future!

I was one of the PhD calls yesterday and was told the same thing as rubyrunner: a cohort of 5. Fingers crossed for those still waiting to hear.

Congratulations bespeckled!!! I'm so happy for you :) I have been pulling for you all along and my day just totally got brighter seeing your acceptance.

Any early modernists among the acceptances? They didn't take any last year, and Egger, in particular, is quite an awesome prof, so I hope some of you going will get to work with her! Congrats to you all! I'm thrilled they admitted more (and sooner!) this year. Congrats to you all. . .but look to live outside Boulder. Especially on that stipend, your money will go a lot farther if you live in the burbs, BUT you get to live in beautiful CO, so that's totes worth it!

Colorado suburbs are as depressing as any other suburb. If you don't want to live in Boulder for economic reasons, look to Denver instead, which is much closer to Boulder than I think people unfamiliar with Colorado commonly think (though I do wonder if you'd feel like a bit of a pariah not living in Boulder, which is much more of a bubble than most college towns.)

Right. . .except that it is 40 mins in ideal traffic and closer to an hour or so to commute from Denver. Additionally, have you looked at real estate prices in Boulder proper? Awful, especially considering their stipend. There are lots of advantages to the school, but it isn't ill sighted to say that a potential grad student should look at more distant housing (though I'd avoid Denver for the distance and cost) for maximizing stipend AND avoiding close (and expensive) housing options that are fucking full of undergrads who party. . cuz Boulder is fun and awesome. . .but a big party school for the undergrads.

god the boulder undergrad scene is obnoxious

boulder is kind of weird in that it is associated with both extreme SUP BRO!!!111 ASU style frat idiocy and exuberance-of-youth hippy everything. and then on top of that it's one of the more educated (by metrics) cities in the country, and CU is a top tier state school.

anyway I dunno I can't say I've done the everyday commute to Boulder from Denver or anything, but if you're not on the 9 to 5 and don't live on the wrong end of town, it can't be that bad, right?

Thanks so much, y'all!! I'm incredibly relieved, to say the least. : )

Thanks, lyoness! Yeah, I've been looking on Craiglist and rents are definitely higher than I expected, but if I end up going there I've got to find a dog-friendly spot. Hoping to be within walking distance to school--if you have other recs of neighborhoods or nearby towns, please feel free to PM me!

I lived in Boulder with a large (Bernese Mtn Dog...~100lbs) canine friend for three years of my undergrad. I can give you some tips on places to look into (an others to avoid) if you're interested. Also, I've done a regular commute from Denver to Boulder and from Boulder to Denver at different points in my life and it really isn't bad at all, even at high traffic times.

Quick question for Colorado acceptees: Did you receive a phone call (other than the acceptance phone call) from the department? I have a message from a Colorado area code, but can't quite make out what's being said. Thanks!

Hey all,

I was also admitted to the program at CU. Just wanted to give any waitlisters a heads up--this morning I sent an email to Paul Youngquist declining admission. It ripped my heart out a little because I really liked Colorado, but it just wasn't a perfect fit :(. But, hopefully this means an acceptance for somebody else who deserves it, dammit! Good luck!

Does anyone know if they make their decisions for Masters and PhDs at different times? I really hope so, but I don't feel like it is going to happen for me :\
