chillinlikeavillain Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Does anyone know if they send out Chicago acceptances in a couple of batches? I see that some people have been accepted on the results page... Also, someone got accepted into Harvard?
migrationdude Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Two people actually. Got a phone-call this evening. Pretty good financial aid package, and some great people there.
Tritonetelephone Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Two people actually. Got a phone-call this evening. Pretty good financial aid package, and some great people there. Jesus, migrationdude! 7/12?? Where will it end?! (Congrats!)
hoopdreams Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Hey migrationdude---congrats! Were you interviewed? I guess I should look out for that rejection letter But congrats to you and I hope you do well.
migrationdude Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Thanks everyone. I'll do some horn-tooting here and announce that beeswax was the other person. Congrats, beeswax! And yes, I did get an interview -- they always do this, it seems, but only for the short-listed applicants.
ejuliast Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Wow!! Congrats to migrationdude and beeswax!
tryffelgris Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 If you don't mind my asking, what kind of funding do these fancy pants private institutions offer? I'm mourning my humble public school offer...
migrationdude Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 So far the 9-month range has been $20k - $22k for me, in comparable-COL areas to LA.
Anonposter84 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 FYI, I believe pton is 26k for next year
waitinginohio Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Jesus, migrationdude! 7/12?? Where will it end?! (Congrats!) Yeah, have you thought about making some calls/emails and withdrawing your application from some schools you are much less interested in (I know you listed your top 4 somewhere else on here), just so you aren't taking places from people who really do want to go there? At this rate it looks like EVERY school wants you, and HUGE CONGRATS for that, but it would be a shame if some other qualified applicants miss out at the schools you aren't even considering anymore.
hardboiledegg Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Did anyone get an actual date for visit day? I only got "sometime in March," and I didn't ask further because I was literally shaking and jumping around.
migrationdude Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Okay, I get the drift. Part of me still wants to see if I can get a perfect-12, but that's kinda silly. Acceptances are still important at this point, because of fellowships: as far as I understand, having many acceptances gives you the power to negotiate, and a higher fellowship from a competing school might result in a matching offer, though not necessarily. I will consider withdrawing two-four applications next week, regardless of whether I hear back by then. In any case, I don't think the timing of my withdrawal matters so much right now, as long as it's made before the end of this month. Decisions have pretty much been made everywhere, and I don't think one withdrawn application would change much. This being said, a withdrawal/refusal would definitely free up some space for Round 2 of decisions, as I do plan to decline the least likely offers in a timely manner. I don't want to engage in acceptance-hogging right now, but I do need to consider my options as well. I definitely feel lucky to be in this position, and I'm sure that most people would proceed in the same way.
nyghtfalls Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 for those of us who may not find ourselves in migrationdude's glorious position (congrats!), I just HAD to post this! someone emailed it to me yesterday, and it's priceless. lol. I made a couple of edits of course. :-) Dr. Robert J. Sampson Chair of the Sociology Graduate Department William James Hall, Sixth Floor 33 Kirkland Street Cambridge, MA 02138 Dear Professor Sampson, Thank you for your letter of February 16. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission to Harvard University's Sociology Graduate Program. This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals. Despite Harvard's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume the position of a new graduate student in your department this August. With much humility, I also reclaim the five year fellowship, $25,000 stipend, tuition remission, and healthcare as well as your complimentary portfolio of hot sexy masseuses that was previously withheld from me. I look forward to seeing you in August! Best of luck in rejecting future applicants. Sincerely, Nyghtfalls i don't care HOW this looks to people... I'm rolling on the floor laughing.
Kcanuck Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I just laughed so hard that I spat coffee all over my keyboard...and its not my keyboard (I'm at work)
migrationdude Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Priceless! Are you actually going to send it? Fo' reals?
ejuliast Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 OK, that made me laugh! Just to clarify, this is all Sociology, not Social Policy & Sociology, right?
jortylander Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I'm not sure. Do you think they'll be contacting any other interviewees?
nyghtfalls Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Priceless! Are you actually going to send it? Fo' reals? perhaps :-) that might be my nerdy attempt at being wild and dangerous for once in my life (insert devilish giggle).
