University of Florida (Gainesville)

I think the standard package is a 1-1 teaching load, $10,700 stipend. I guess that Gainesville has a pretty low cost of living...

Hmmmm.......The cost of living must be REALLY low for that kind of stipend. That is almost half of my current offer....I wonder how much we should put into the money we are offered.....

Cost of living in Gainesville is OK. I really can't say though since I've only lived in the Central Florida area. Rent is not as cheap as you'd like, and it is a college town through and through. Tallahassee (FSU) has better rent options, I think. I will say Gainesville has pretty decent food considering the size and type of city.

I have a 1/1 that is easily bikeable to campus. I pay 465 a month for rent and then utilities (shitty DSL for 25 and 50-100 for electric [depends on your AC dependence]). My girlfriend is renting a room in a 3/1 house for 375 a month plus utilities of around 75-100. It's a decently neat old house, if that's your thing. She's also really close to campus -- the "student ghetto," unfortunately it's fratstar central generally.

The farther away from campus you get the quieter and cheaper it tends to go -- even outside of Gainesville, lots of profs live in the surrounding Newberry and High Springs areas. It gets rural fast, though. Within the city proper, as you move away from the university, you'll eventually hit the point of "too cheap." As small and friendly as the city is, it can be kind of dangerous and seedy. Putting aside any politics of homelessness, it's a salient problem in the city.

I also have the suspicion that any one from NYC or Boston or the like might read this, laugh, and say "no gainesville is definitely cheap and sure there are SOME homeless."

For anybody with experience applying to UFL, where on earth did you send your GRE scores? I sent mine in back in November and they still aren't being shown as received. I sent them with the institution code and department code, which seems to be what the English dept.'s site is suggesting to do, but now two months later they aren't there?

All my e-mails asking for help have received radio silence and I'm starting to get frustrated with the deadline 10 days away. I'm going to try to call Kathy again tomorrow.

Any suggestions? Should I have sent them with just the institution code?

Congrats you guys! I applied to Florida and thought everything was awesome, but then I logged in to check my status (well after the deadline) and my transcript never got there? Even though the other ones I mailed, on the same day, all made it to their destinations.

I emailed and never got a response. So I guess I wasn't even considered.

I got accepted but I'm not sure if I will be going. I'm hoping to attend the visit weekend, though. How about you?

I'll definitely be attending the visit weekend. Leah Rosenberg said it would probably be the 29-30th, but wasn't 100% positive. If nothing else, I want to scout housing options.

UGH I had a HELL of a time with this application. About two weeks from the due date I saw that my GRE scores still hadn't been received (which I sent way, way in advance), so had to rush to send them again. Saw they were received about two days before the deadline. This one really stressed me out, but thankfully ended up being worth the hassle.

Ahh, I'm glad you got it fixed in time! I had the hardest time logging in to the page that actually shows your status... all I had access to at first was the page that says your application is complete, so I had no idea my transcript was MIA until well into February. So disappointing. I kind of want to ask for my $30 back haha.

And I'm so sorry this happened to you! The same thing happened to me last cycle when I applied to Chapel Hill (and, oh, how I wept), so I was super paranoid this time around.

So, when I got the call from Florida I failed to make note of person who called me. Yay me. I assumed that it was the DGS, which would be Sid Dobrin, because another admit on here said that they got a call from Dr. Dobrin --so I emailed him with some followup questions. But I'm feeling paranoid now that maybe it was Kenneth Kidd (dept. chair who is also a Victorianist and one of my POIs) who called.

Did everyone else get called by the same person? Or did you get a call from one of your POIs? I keep checking my email hoping I didn't just make myself look like an enormous idiot, but they way this week is going, I probably did...

My call came from Leah Rosenberg, which surprised me (she wasn't one of my POIs, but someone I'll probably end up studying under), but my call also came on Saturday and I don't think Dr. Dobrin was in his office, so she was doing the calls (though I would've thought that Kathy Williams would do them then? At any rate, Dr. Rosenberg was very nice.) I probably would've geeked out and made an idiot of myself if Dr. Kidd had called me as he was one of my POIs.

As it was, I barely remember anything about the phone call. I had to have her repeat her phone number twice before I got it right.

Waiting for the e-mail is making me antsy. It's almost like I can't believe it until I have it in writing? Also, I just want more solid funding details.

Haven't heard anything yet, so I'm assuming it's the waitlist or rejection for me at this point. However, I did notice when I checked my online status that it listed all of my transcripts under a "transcripts needed" section, even though I sent them all and have e-mail confirmations from the colleges that they were processed and sent. Is anyone else seeing this?
