zecchi Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Hi everyone! I've noticed that some people have been accepted to Rutgers, congratulations! I have as well, and I am very excited. I just thought I would start a topic to see who got in, as we may be future peers! I am going to be visiting the school March 19-20... will anyone else be in the area at that time? Also, has anyone here visited the school? What do you think?
miyamoto81 Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 (edited) Hey Zecchi, I'll bite! I am in as well, and feeling very grateful, I know it's a good school. I used to hang out in New Brunswick some - RU is a nice campus, though huge. I think all the colleges make up like, 50,000 students or something ridiculous. The arts buildings are mostly downtown, though I believe there is also one on the Livingston campus, across the Raritan river. The Rutgers College campus is the most "college-y" campus, and the Douglas/Cook campus is really nice and green. Rutgers is a good location, about a 45 min train ride from New York, about another 45 min drive from Princeton (which is beautiful). Another bonus is that NJ Transit has a train station right in the heart of New Brunswick, so it's super convenient. I also might be going the week of the 19th to check it out. If I make it, I will keep you posted. I'll be interested to hear what you think about the program as well! Edited March 9, 2012 by miyamoto81
inkhouse Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 I'll be visiting March 22nd. I've read people the school might not grant assistantships until after the April 2nd deadline. Have any of you heard this first hand? I believe the art building across the river houses sculpture and ceramics facilities.
jjr8888 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I got accepted and visited the campus and sat in on a class. It's seriously great. Stephen Westfall is smart, and so are the students.
miyamoto81 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 jjr8888, you were the one who got funding, yeah? Whether or not I can go seriously depends on how much they give me. I am wondering what the average amount of funding they give is and what the qualifications are for receiving it . . . (just thinking out loud)
jjr8888 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Nah, I haven't been notified yet buuutt I think I got something. IDK.
miyamoto81 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Wait, someone on the freak out forum said that they were told they got like, the mythical full funding of tuition reimbursement plus $25k when they called to inquire about admission . . . As far as I know, we all had to submit our letters and they would tell us. The problem for me is that they said they might not be able to notify until after the April 2nd deadline. I dunno, I'm gonna get up there at some point, hopefully I can get some info.
jjr8888 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Yep it was okmeow. Lucky bastard. I suppose they told their top choice for aid first and then they'll tell everyone else as they know what funds can be allocated to whichever students...when are you visiting?
testing Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 what happens if you accept the offer before the April 2 deadline, then reject it later if you didn't get the funding?
jjr8888 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 They seems to be relaxed about the deadline but if this happens then they ask someone else to enroll. Someone on the waiting list (if they have one) or someone else.
zecchi Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 Has anyone seen the insane jump for Rutgers according to the US news and world report?! For painting, it went from 21st to 13th!! kazoo 1
jjr8888 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Wow. I didn't realize. So that means we should go to Rutgers, huh? Lol.
miyamoto81 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Hey y'all, I'm sure you've all seen this, but I thought I'd post it anyway: http://rutgersmfa.blogspot.com/ It's a blog run by RU MFA students. There are links to current grads, recently graduated peeps and to faculty sites. All in all, visually informative.
frez83 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Hey everyone, I just found out I was wait listed at Rutgers. Are any of you leaning towards not going? I'm hoping some people who are going other places might make an early decision.

Its a great program but I have other needs... LMAO ....read: I got a better offer. You're from NYC, have you been to Rutgers yet? You'll probably like it.

LMAO ....read: I got a better offer. You're from NYC, have you been to Rutgers yet? You'll probably like it. Yeah I saw you had a great offer from Madison! If I were you I'd go with that too! I have been to Rutgers but never given an official tour. Maybe I should email Anine to see if I could go check out the studios. One of my professors from undergrad went there so I have heard about it and from everything I know it sounds fantastic.
miyamoto81 Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Tyson2, you should definitely go tour, I'd be interested to hear what you think about it. Has anyone else checked it out? I'd love to hear thoughts!
jjr8888 Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Well I had the chance to visit the art bldg., sit in on a class with Stephen Westfall and go on a tour with Anine. She's quite cute and overall helpful. So I went to undergrad. at Columbia and I've seen their studios and comparatively Rutgers is about as good as it gets in the East Coast as far as the sizes of the studios go. But the overall bldg feels cramped and small because there are a lot of departments in one shared bldg. (I think it was some kind of program irrelevant to art...think business or economics). I think I was a little rushed when I took the tour in one day, or at least it felt that way because the previous week I spent a whole week in Madison touring the town and the University of Wisconsin. So I was probably primed for low expectations since I loved the serenity and cuteness of Madison. As a resident of Brooklyn, I envy the space and quiet of places outside major cities. So that beings said, I didn't make many impressions of Rutgers. The class I sat in on was really intense. Not in a bad way though. Just like my undergrad days in good ol' philosophy classes talking about metaphysics and simultaneity and Spinoza. So you should expect high academic standards. The critiques are sophisticated as are the faculty and students. Anywho, its damn close to NY so what can you expect from an art school in NJ? Nire Nedyah 1
zecchi Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 Hi everyone! So, anyone here for sure going to Rutgers. I am definitely thinking about it. My experience there was amazing to say the least. We can move into our studios July 1st!!!! So I am looking for potential roommates... This is so exciting!
miyamoto81 Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Zecchi, how did you like it? When I was there, I sat in on a class and was really impressed. I'd love to hear more about what you thought!

Well Rutgers is primarily known for their painting faculty... but how about new genres? Did you sit in on a performance class or new media/ new genres?
miyamoto81 Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I sat in on a photo/media class and it was really great. The work I saw was really compelling and the instructor, Gary Schneider, was great as well. The studio sizes are nice and the location is great for being able to get into NYC when you need to, but also being able to leave when you need to as well. From what I could tell, there were very few people operating solely in one concentration. Like most New York programs, it's seems highly interdisciplinary. All in all, a thumbs up on my end.
zecchi Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Zecchi, how did you like it? When I was there, I sat in on a class and was really impressed. I'd love to hear more about what you thought! You've got it! It is amazing. The faculty is a freaking all star cast. The work blew my mind. The studios very in size but seem to work out for everyone. There is a new visiting artist every single week. It is so close to nyc. After talking with many students, it seems to be an ongoing trend that students will work their asses off mon-fri then get on a train and rock it out in nyc for the weekend. I went running through the next town, Highland Park, and it was incredibly quaint and beautiful-- that is where most MFA students live and I am hoping to move their. I mean, the campus itself is definitely removed from any sort of larger art scene... the only coffee places are Starbucks and DD! But-- that just means we will have to brew some of our own in the studio. Could I get your real name, perhaps? It would be good to connect with my future cohort...
frez83 Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 All this talk about the program is making me hope even more I get off the wait list. I really hope some people decline their admission decisions soon. I want to go back for another visit soon, I'm afraid I might not get the chance before the semester ends. If I do, I'll post what my experience was like. I'd also like to mention though, being that we are talking about the school and it's location, is that it is really close to Newark which is an awesome city. A lot of people do not realize how many cool places for art Newark has. It's no Chelsea, but There are some great galleries, studio spaces, and cafes/coffee houses. If you go to Rutgers, I hopes many of you go check it out. PM me if any of you want to know of places to check out there
