erry3779 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 After hearing good news from SIS AU, i got wait listed at Elliot GWU. now im very worried about my SAIS and SIPA applications. What if I got wait listed also or even worse!? Do anyone have some information on how good is your chance to get off the wait list? Thank you in advance
Burnt Orange Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Don't let it beat you up. You never know what some schools look for. I didn't get into GW TSPPPA but got into LBJ, SPEA, and generous funding from Sanford at Duke. You just can't be sure what one committee will see and appreciate that another won't.
JayLovesAfrica Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Does it also depend on WHERE you are on the wait list? Do they rank people in order of preference or something?
erry3779 Posted March 10, 2012 Author Posted March 10, 2012 Yeah lets just hope for the best! Next week will be full of surprises
Mal83 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 You shouldn't be that worried or disappointed, last year I got waitlisted and ultimately accepted to Elliott but rejected from SIS. It just depends on where you are on the waitlist, and how many people decline the offer of admission, which obviously differs every season. Getting rejected from one school doesn't really indicate your decision from another, especially since the application pool is different for every school. It's barely the middle of March and you know for sure that you have somewhere to go this fall. American is pretty solid too. Plus, you won't know about Elliott for a good month and a half or so at this point I would be relieved and really happy with getting an acceptance at this stage of the game.
fenderpete Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 If I don't get funding from Elliott it drops out of contention for me, so you can have my spot

Your words are very relieving... Im gonna stay positive and hope for the best! In the meantime, i'll write to GWU to confirm that I would like to stay on the wait list
erry3779 Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 Anyway, another question.. Should I do something after I confirmed that I want to remain on the wait list? Or just do nothing?
meichen_l Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 i know some admitted students (10+) are very likely not going to accept the offer.. so i'd say your chance to get rid of WL is fairly big
clover123 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I was on the wait list last year for Claremont Graduate University. I got accepted after being there for a few months, but ultimately decided to reject their offer, since I wanted to work and apply for MPA programs this year. I think that your chances are pretty good. The fact that they wait listed you means that they obviously liked your application, but are still a little unsure. I'm waitlisted at Cornell currently (I hate the wait). But I'm not too worried. There are a lot of applicants who don't end up attending the schools they get accepted to, so I'm sure you'll be fine! As long as you've confirmed your seat, I think you should just wait. Unless in the past month or 2 you've suddenly improved your profile with a better job/project, I wouldn't worry about sending them any more info. Good luck to us
Coloradical Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Most students apply to a number of schools so there must be a lot of movement on the waitlist. Math!
Waiting13 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I've been waitlisted at the Elliot School too... May 18th is a long ways away to have to keep waiting! I really don't like this process.
IRToni Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 While there definitely is some hope, you should also remember that schools will admit more students than they have spots, knowing that a lot of them are quite unlikely to accept the offer. I'm not trying to discourage you, I just think betting on getting off the waitlist as your only plan might get you disappointed. If it's your dream school and you'd be fine with working for another year, then go for it. If it's not and you've got great offers elsewhere, think about it.
apsuwa Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I think it may depend on whether you're a us citizen or an international. And I would argue that internationals are more likely to get off the waitlist..
IRToni Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Waitlisted at Yale. Not sure if it's worth sticking it out. I assume they don't offer funding to waitlisted people and I really can't afford it. I guess I'll wait till Friday to decide (at that point, most of the decisions should be out),
clover123 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I'm waiting to hear about my waitlist option too. ugh. the wait sucks
igg29 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I got accepted to SAIS but waitlisted at GWU if that's reassuring... Waiting13, I agree that May is seriously too long to wait to make these decisions!

Thank you in advance I reckon there will be a lot of people who will decline due to better offers from other schools/lack of funding. I just said no to Elliot, so that's at least one spot! And you'll find other people saying the same thing on other topics. Good luck!
pillows65 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Waitlisted at SAIS, GW Elliott, AND Fletcher. In at SIS and UMD MPP. Anyone have any advice? Also accepted to Fordham Law, so I may go that route....

Also accepted to Fordham Law, so I may go that route.... How flexible are your summer plans? Honestly maybe you can drop a deposit and then enroll at a more-preferenced school if you come off the waitlist. I was WL'd at SAIS and one thing that keeps my hope alive is that most people apply (and seem to be accepted to) multiple universities. Obviously we can only attend one school so spots are bound to open up. Keep hope alive!
akristine1 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Wait listed at GWU as well. In at Korbel and Fletcher but Elliot was my first choice, so thanks for some of the hopeful replies! Would it be of any help to send additional material to them? I don't want to seem pushy or desperate. Also, does anyone know if they notify wait list students on an as-go basis or wait to notify everyone on May 18?

THey said that they well notify all at once on May 18! On April 1st, they will get the real number of students who accept or decline their admissions offer. THen they'll be meeting and deciding the ones who will be out of the wait list!
PrattIAFF Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Just a thought. If you are waitlisted, it does not necessarily mean that your application was considered to have less merit than those who were accepted initially. In some cases, the admissions committee considers the likelihood that someone would accept an offer based on the probability that they will be offered admission to a school that is higher on the candidate's list, or that is ranked higher. When you apply to these schools, they usually ask to which other programs you are applying, and they can reasonably assume that, if they think that you will accept an admission offer from another university, that they would waitlist you in order to offer admission to someone who is more likely to accept the offer... does that make sense?
Slopo Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I too was waitlisted at GWU, after making it into American.
