SLPisforme Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Hi there, Thought I'd start a thread for those of us waiting to hear back from Canadian SLP schools. Please share if you've heard anything from Canadian programs, or have any helpful information for those of us getting anxious! Thanks!
Leah04 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Hi sirk88, I am too waiting for word on the SLP programs. Where are you from/Where did you apply? I know for UWO the results will come via email and a phone call on April 2nd (or sometimes a day or two early for the email/response via student centre) and I assume UofT is the same because the process is through ORPAS. I know this because I was accepted into Audiology last year. It is very nerve-racking to wait...YET AGAIN! but this forum helps to pass time. As for UofA, a friend got in last year and I think she had to wait a little longer then I did. I'm not sure about Dal, UBC or McGill Does anyone else know about these programs? Hope this helps!
SLPisforme Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 Hey Leah04, Thanks for your feedback, it's nice to be able to chat about this with other people in the same position. This is my second year applying to SLP after returning to university this year to boost my GPA. I only applied to the University of Alberta (only applied to one for various reasons). I'm from Ontario though, so I'm not sure how or whether the U of A factors this into their decision. The gradcafe admission results page had a couple of postings where people were admitted to U of A around March 14th and 15th in 2010 and 2011 so I'm really hoping to hear something soon... mainly because I can't take the waiting any longer lol. Not sure about Dal, UBC or McGill unfortunately. Hopefully more people find this as an entertaining way to pass the time and can help us out!
Leah04 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I hear the UofA has a very solid program and I have heard a lot of positive feedback about it. I don't think there are any restrictions for being out of province...I think I've only read that about Dal's program? I really hope you get in and we will be reading your post about where to live in Edmonton very soon (hopefully only a few more days if it's March 14th or 15th)! It sounds like we in the same situation but reversed, if that even makes sense; I applied to the Ontario schools and moved from Alberta last year--Beautiful here by the way; just am a bit apprehensive of this bagged milk! This year, I only applied to 2 universities because of prereq's and restrictions with my husband's work. I feel like the 2nd time around is so much more stressful! At least I don't remember the first time being so nerve-racking! Best Luck!
SLP000123 Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Hey guys! I applied to Dal's SLP program last year and was placed on the waitlist. I received my letter around the 3rd or 4th week of April (I'm from Ontario). This year, I applied to Alberta, Western, and Toronto. Has anyone heard back from Alberta? Best of luck to all of us!
raspberrypeach Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Hi! I am also waiting to hear back from the Canadian SLP programs. This is my second time applying, last year I was on the wait-list for the University of Alberta. I received the letter by mail around the end of April/beginning of May. This year I applied to U of A and U of T for SLP. Leah04 - Congrats on getting in Audiology at UWO last year! I applied to that program as well this year but I am not too sure how competitive it is. Best of luck to everyone!
Leah04 Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Thanks raspberry peach, it was very exciting to be accepted; however it's been a bit of a rough ride these last few months with changing programs and waiting. I know this is not a lot of help for the programs outside of Ontario; but the previous statistics for UWO and UofT are posted here: http://www.ouac.on.ca/statistics/orpas-application-statistics/ SLP000123; I hear Dal's very difficult to get into due to the limited number of seats and it only has a couple spots open to out-of-province students, so it's quite the accomplishment to get on the waitlist--seriously! I hope you get into the program you want this year. Do you guys know if they take into consideration if you were waitlisted last year? I know we have to check it off on the application form, so my fingers are crossed that it helps! What is your first choice in schools (everyone)? who knows maybe we'll end up in the class
lingCal Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Hi Everyone, I also applied for SLP this year. I applied at U of A, McGill, Dalhousie, U of T, and UWO. I don't expect that we will hear anything from the schools in Ontario until April 2. The U of A and McGill were my top choices and I was accepted at both. I'm just wondering what you all have heard about these programs. I know they are both well respected schools and I would love your input! I heard from McGill on March 16th, U of A on March 20th, and Dalhousie yesterday ( I didn't get into Dalhousie). Thanks everyone, and good luck!
SLP_hopeful Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Hello everyone, Congratulations to those that have heard. I only applied to U of A this year due to my husband's job in Edmonton. I'm feeling quite anxious that I have not heard anything. I really have no idea what to expect. Good luck to everyone
SLPisforme Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Congrats to those who have acceptances! To those still waiting....609 views of this thread and only 8 posts.... maybe it's a good sign that many are also waiting and searching for answers as they too have not heard back? "Slp Hopeful" I have only applied to U of A as well and am pretty bummed about not hearing anything yet. I've heard a few conflicting pieces of information regarding this school.... some have gotten acceptances, while another said they phoned and that people wouldn't be notified until May (which didn't make too much sense to me considering the website says first week of April)... I'm thinking I'm going to probably cave at some point this week and phone or email. When I do I will report back with any info ASAP! As for those waiting to hear from Ontario schools hang in there April 2 is just a few more days away! All the best to everyone... keep on posting!
raspberrypeach Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Leah04 - Thanks for the link! lingCal - Congrats on the acceptances to your top schools, that is awesome! I have not heard anything back from U of A, definitely feeling the anxiety as well. I am assuming some early admissions went out a few weeks ago if some people heard back already (U of A OT sends out early admissions around the same time). Looking forward to some more information though, I also saw the post in the results survey about the person who phoned and was told people wouldn't be notified until May... Good luck everyone!
tintontinton Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Hi Everyone, I also applied for SLP this year. McGill?!? Uhhh I got rejected there twice, I want to go there so bad. My cousin goes there and she said that the city and the program are to die for!
lingCal Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Thanks tintontinton! I am so happy to have been accepted at McGill – they only take 27 students per year and I am very tempted to go because it is such a great school and Montreal is fantastic! The trouble is that my partner has to stay in Calgary for work and if I go to U of A, I will be only 3 hours away! It’s a big toss up! Anyways, as for you that haven’t heard from the U of A, be patient. I know that it takes a while to hear from them sometimes. Also, a friend of mine who did the program told me that people in her class were 20th or more on the waitlist! Good luck every one. Keep us posted!
dlau27 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I emailed U of A last Friday, and they said they haven't filled their quota yet, and they said that the committee doesn't have a lot of time to meet, so the process takes longer. Hopefully, we'll find out soon!!
wilsonm Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 LingCal, I would be all over McGill if I were you! Not only is it a very competitive program (I've also been rejected twice now ), but that school is known for it's history/focus in neuroscience! What a great place to study language and the brain! Plus the added awesomeness of Montreal. No-brainer in my opinion.
SLP_hopeful Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Wow - this thread has been more informative than conversations I've had on campus! I'm a little encouraged that perhaps U of A is still filling their class. This is my first year applying so I knew it could be an uphill battle. I would love to apply to more schools, however, I'm in the same boat as far as having a partner than cannot leave his work. However, we've already discussed how we could work it out if I were to be accepted somewhere else next year. In the grand scheme of things, 2 years with lots of visits/short term leave of absence (his part) and perhaps placements here in Alberta could work I believe. The one girl that I heard for sure was offered admission was a total shoo in anyhow (works for one of the profs,4.0, tons of relevent experience and research awards etc...) so perhaps it's just those early admissions that have been offered. I just stumbled upon this site the other day so I am a little unfamiliar with the lay-out, but over 800 views? I'd say there are lots of us waiting...good point sirk88 And each of these offers has 2 weeks to respond? Am I remembering this correctly? So new offers could be going out the same time as the first offers need to be in...oh my. LingCal - 20th on the waitlist? That's a tad reassuring While I feel I'm a decent candidate, I'm totally fine being offer #56 - or more - as long as I get in!! dlau27 - thanks for the update Nice to "meet" people going through the same thing. As I'm a mature student returning to school (and only recently returned to university to pick up the last remaining prereq's) I have not met anyone that is applying aside from at the OASIS conference last fall. Good luck everyone. I will also keep everyone posted if I hear anything.
spascoe Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Hi everyone! Thank you all for the useful information. I have been anxiously waiting to hear back from U of T and UWO. Just to clarify, the acceptance letters are sent out via email for ORPAS? I live in Victoria and don't want to have to wait for my letter to get here from Ontario via snail mail. Also, do they let you know if you don't get in on the first round, or do you have to play the waiting game? April 2nd is almost here! Only a weekend away. I am starting to get so anxious!! Congrats to everyone who has got in already! You sure deserve it Goodluck to everyone who is still waiting to hear!!
SLP000123 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Hey guys! I called University of Alberta this morning. The administrative assistant gave me the same information as she gave dlau27. She confirmed that they still haven't filled their quota yet. She also said those who will be offered admission will be notified through a phone call followed up by an e-mail. Those who are waitlisted/rejected will be notified later. I'm not sure where I stand with Alberta ... my gpa, research work, and volunteer experiences are great, but I can't say too much about my GRE score spascoe, I know for sure that we'll receive an e-mail on April 2 from each of the schools (not directly from ORPAS, but from the schools themselves). We'll be notified on that day whether we are accepted, waitlisted or rejected, so we'll know right from the get-go. Thanks leah04! You're right though.. it is extremely difficult for individuals not from the maritime provinces to get accepted to Dal (let alone make it off of the waitlist). I was pretty bummed when they never called me, so I am hoping that something will work out this year instead .. And congrats to LingCal on your acceptances! You give us some hope I'm getting really anxious too! I just want to know at this point. Good luck everyone!
SLPisforme Posted March 31, 2012 Author Posted March 31, 2012 slp000123 thanks for phoning! You made my weekend with that news. The GRE is an awful thing! If you are great in every other aspect though I feel like you don't have to worry too much. Last year when I inquired about how they view scores the grad advisor said that as long as you score above the 50th percentile in all three areas you should be fine. Considering they are so vague about it, and never really answer about lowest cut-off scores I feel like it's just a hurdle they have created to weed out people who just decide to throw in an application, but then again who knows! (No offense to those of you who didn't want to write it, I don't blame you) My GRE's are not stellar either (but above that 50th percentile mark in all areas), my GPA for last 60 credits is 3.55 which they say is competitive, but I'm not sure really what that means (first time I applied, and not admitted it was 3.3). Last year the lowest average they admitted was 3.4. I'm really banking on my speech experience (1 year with adult population, 1 year with kids), numerous additional volunteer activities including president of a school club with over 300 members, and research in both a developmental and hearing lab (no published papers though) will make me stand out.... but then again.... who knows! lol Finally, I saw someone on the survey was admitted to U of A with a 3.7 in the last 60 credits to give you an idea of the grades they accepted this past week. They posted their GRE scores too but it is the new grading system they posted and I'm not familiar with that as mine are from the old GRE, so I don't know how good they were. Check it out tho if you're curious! I really just wish all of us could get in! Good luck again to everyone!
SLP_hopeful Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Thanks for the updates Sirk88- I wanted to compare my GRE scores to the person you mentioned but I'm not sure where the survey is you mentioned?

SLP_hopeful Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Good luck to all the Ontario applicants. The emails arrive Monday, yes?
SLPisforme Posted March 31, 2012 Author Posted March 31, 2012 Hey Slphopeful. I'm posting the link to those results again, as I fear the link I already posted may go unnoticed. All posted results from U of A applicants over the years... http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=speech+alberta&t=a&o=&pp=250
yrdsb Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 (edited) Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had heard anything from UofT? I know they typically send out acceptance emails, do they email if you are placed on the waitlist? Getting anxious, found out I did not get into Western this morning. Thanks!
