strangertimes Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Has anyone ever done it/spoken to anyone who has successfully accomplished it?
rose1 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 It's acceptable for PhD programs in some fields but I havent heard about it among IR masters programs
greendiplomat Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I think 2 years ago when I got into SIPA, Matt Clemons (now at HKS) made a blog post that they couldn't do that, but I'm not sure how it is at other schools.
Coloradical Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Blog posts? Announced algorithms? I'm beginning to envy the SIP adcom of yore.
strangertimes Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Mhmm, and the school I am thinking about is SAIS - only $8,000 - so I'm guessing it's no use?
Canadianlinguist Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Does this mean when you get somewhere and they fund almost everyone in your class, but you? because this happened to me in a MA program. They felt that my teaching background didn't warrant a TA, and I can't go without it, and I don't know what to do....but its so costly funding is essentail....
greendiplomat Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Oh, I thought the OP was talking about the situation where your top choice doesn't give you as much money as a peer institution. Could be wrong though.
readyornot Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I have been considering reaching out to my top choice and asking them to match my highest funding. Would this be totally insane?
orangesplease Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I have been considering reaching out to my top choice and asking them to match my highest funding. Would this be totally insane? Couldn't hurt! GPPI made it a point to include in their email to me that they do not take funding from other programs into account when providing merit aid XD ha ha
strangertimes Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 I have been considering reaching out to my top choice and asking them to match my highest funding. Would this be totally insane? That's basically what I want to do as well, though it makes me nervous thinking about it.
piquant777 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 That's basically what I want to do as well, though it makes me nervous thinking about it. Same. But let's try to be brave and diplomatic. The worst that can happen is they say no and we're back to the status quo.
IRToni Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 What are all of your top choices and would you go even if no additional funding?
strangertimes Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 Oh, I thought the OP was talking about the situation where your top choice doesn't give you as much money as a peer institution. Could be wrong though. I'm not sure what "OP" means but if that means the person who started the post: then yes, I did mean that. Two of the second choices (both great schools - I didn't apply anywhere outside of top 10) gave me near-full rides, but SAIS gave me a fellowship of 8k.
nouveau.ukiyo Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I'm not sure what "OP" means Original poster
