  1. Hey guys, I am not going in to law but I am faced with a huge delima, and I wondered if you could help me. I would rather PM someone than right it on here, but the short version is, I am applying to schools and have some impressive acceptances, but zero funding anywhere. The thing is, I am a good student, but my school pulled me from a program, in a very questionable way a year ago, and that is killing me in the application process. I owe a lot of people a lot for helping me get through this, but I never wanted to open a can of worms by sueing, but now that I can't afford grad school I think it may be the best thing..... I just hope that someone, a future lawyer who understand the application process, wouldn't made hearing my story and giving me advice. I want to pay back the people who have helped me without killing my Phd shot. ANyways......if you wouldn't mind hearing me out, please let me know... Thanks
  2. You can get into some MA programs without a lingusitics specific background, but others will reject you, or will conditionally admit you until you take required courses. Could you take an elective or something through your program now? Sorry if thats a silly question I really have no idea, but some programs have an introdductory course that students are required to take first (is Syracuse) but I think its safe to say that a linguistics background is a huge assest in the admissions process
  3. Any one going to Syracuse this fall pleeeeasssse PM me!!!! question for you, need the prespecitive of students in differnt programs and or other international students...this is so stressful...

  4. No and I am really really really shocked....I know I couldn't go since no one is funded...but if they reject me i'd still be sad
  5. Yeah don't worry your forsure not alone!!
  6. I am still waiting for MSU, EMU, U of Minn (linguistics), colorado, all M.A programs....so your not alone.
  7. Thank you and that makes sense. I feel kinda stupid for being sso sure I was getting in.
  8. yeah I have two rejections too, and good I am glad you liked it!
  9. Words of wisdom I recieved after a recjection a while back....enjoy..... (one of my professors found it in some book and e-mailed me the quote. "So you rejected me? Well I am too good to there. So now I am going to a lower ranked school? Yes, to study under professors who believe in me. So my application was imperfect? Well to another school/job it was flawless. So your rejection made me cry? I'll laugh the day I get into a Phd program. So I am scared about gettin in nowhere? Someway somehow something will work out and i'll be better off ...a rejection letter isn't an inslut, its not personal, and it doesn't mean your not smart enough....it just means that wasn't met to be, and your met for something better. One day youll look back and smile at your rejections, and thank god that they were not acceptances."
  10. Can't remember ever being this scared.

  11. I am an international student, applying to linguistics MA programs. I have a linguistics degree, a french degree, an educational (TESL) minor. I have been rejected from one school and accepted from another and am waiting on six. As an international student you can imagine my sadness when I got into Syracuses MA program without funding. It is hard to inmagine anyone who can afford to go there without loans. It is impossib le to get American loans and the Canadian goverment won;t grant you loans to go to American schoosl. As a graduate from a state university in the U.S (where I was on an athletic scholarship), where my whole life is, and my degree isn't respected by Canadian grauate schools. Anyways, Syracuse gives TA's to MA students that teach forigen langauges (expect french of course because they fill those spots with their own program), basically making it understandable. However, I am scared, about not getting funding anywhere. I talked to my parents and they said that they could figure it out for me if I get tuition coverecd. SO I need some kind of assistantship, somewhere, but right now I am worreid about syracuse because thats where I have the acceptance....Any suggestions?
  12. This is a pre-mature post, as in I have not yet offically been accepted. My program (MA linguistics), has recently hired a few new professors, and is looking at applications now. However, I have had a few teacher assistant interviews, and I know that doesn't garentee aceptance. However, I want to go more then anything, and the minute I get in, with some position resulting in at minium my tuition covered, I am accepting. I know there is going to be a lot to figure out, and even though I could end up being very disappointed, I wanted to post here anyways. What would you guys recomend as a graduate student, (I am Canadian, and was on an athletic scholarship at my undergraduate institution) in terms of living situations? I know no one, am fairly quiet and studious. I would like to if possible, be around other younger graduate students. Also, inorder to save money, I would possibly like to find a roomate. I don't know if I will have a car, but have no problem taking buses places and or biking. Also, does anyone have any experience with trains, in and out of East Lansing? I just wondered where the best place to look for tickets is? I have a boyfriend who has another year of undergrad left, so he'll be in Minnesota, and once and a while, pending on various factors I would like to visit him, and wouldn't mind getting an idea of the cost of doing that ahead of time/
  13. Oh my god I have a ton of teaching expeirence too! I want to go to the U of M more then anything, I just knew from the day I applied it was a long shot because of my professors poor record of trying to send students there. Would you suggest calling? I feel like I might be waitlisted, just because if you guys already got in, and I haven't been rejected...I dont know I probably shouldn't assume anything If so who would I call?
  14. where did you go? (I am originally from Ontario)
  15. Really! I go to St CLoud state, I liked the looks of the program a lot. BUt in 15 years my undergraduate POI Dr. Koffi , has never sucessfully sent a student their, and I got rejected from second languages and cultures But question, how did you find out because when I log in all it says is my application was sent to the program?
  16. Yeah thats not a great masters stipend, but I don't care, I just want tuition covered.
  17. Hey did you get into the U of M masters or Phd? Are you a current U of M student? Either way congradulations!!
  18. Oh believe me! I did want to slap, not only is linguistics a science, its dam competitive, the only people in the field are really smart. Yeah rent free, its just an american liberal arts degree isn't really going to get me a job, (a MA would). So yeah I have a lot riding on the next few weeks....
  19. Okay! Thanks very much for the advice!
  20. have heard all of these... 1. Don't worry it will work out. 2. Linguistics isn't that competitive its not even science 3. Oh don't go there, so and so went there and hated it. 4. If you get a Phd you'll be how old before you get out of schooL?!?! 5. Your cousin had a hard time getting into grad school and she had better get grades then you..... - my response: Yes, but thats med school, and she didn't do well on the MCATS - the reply: well I really hope your right because other wise you'll be stuck in the middle of no where Canada, living in your parents basement Thanks for making me worry less ....sigh
