Canadianlinguist Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Question: If you (meaning me) was admited into a program, that is far too dam expensive to go too but usually gives MA students TA's, and is just choosing not to fund me what should I do? I have tons of teaching experience glowing references, and its applicable expereince, I even have an education degree. I am disappionted (clearly) but who knows with applciatiants and budgets and whatever. Oh also, I have a french degree and am a bilingual french english speaker. What I want to know, is hwo you guys got TA's? Did your programs give them to you? who at your schools did you contact? That school that won't fund me wasn't my number one choice, but I am very worried that finances in my number one chocies department won't allow for much masters funding. So I want to do what I need to do as promptly as possible to increase my funding odds.
ANDS! Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Does your program have a doctoral track? If so, those TA'ships will be offered to them first.
Canadianlinguist Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Yes it does, but is it possible to get one out of your programz?
robot_hamster Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I wasn't offered funding initially. After I was admitted, I talked to the coordinator and was set up with a position for my second semester. You should find out how your school handles setting up TA positions. Do you go through your advisor or is there a coordinator who is set up to take care of that? Canadianlinguist 1
Canadianlinguist Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Should I just aks my advisor because i have no idea?
robot_hamster Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 You can ask your advisor. They may or may not know. Mine didn't know or offer any suggestions. Does your school have a faculty directory online? Sometimes you can find the right person that way.
Canadianlinguist Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 So I am looking for the TA coordinator?
Canadianlinguist Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 Okay! Thanks very much for the advice!
robot_hamster Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 No problem. I hope you find the right person to talk to. Sometimes you have to do some investigating/asking around to figure out who you really need to talk to. Sometimes they have multiple job responsibilities and figuring out TA stuff is just one of them.
new_to_kin Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I had a TA in my Masters but it was nowhere near enough to live on (think $150 a month!). The better TAs were given to doctoral students. I would talk to the admissions person. FWIW, my doctoral program gives automatic funding which may or may not include a TA (same money regardless)
Canadianlinguist Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 Yeah thats not a great masters stipend, but I don't care, I just want tuition covered.
new_to_kin Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Yes, my tuition was covered with a combo of this TA and other GAs.
Canadianlinguist Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 where did you go? (I am originally from Ontario)
