mtnmapper Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Hi All, I'll be joining the doctoral program in the Department of Geography at CU-Boulder in Fall 2012. Is anyone else out there headed to Boulder!?
ANDS! Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 One of my peers is heading out there for Mathematics - she said she loved the place. Who wouldn't - Rocky Mountains.
EquationForLife Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Still technically considering it for biochemistry but unlikely
grlu0701 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 I've been admitted to the PhD in history, but I'm waitlisted for funding. I've heard that CU is relatively strapped for cash, but does anyone have anything more detailed than this? And does anyone have any info on the funding waitlist process at CU? I've already began seeking out alternative sources of funding (such as teaching freshman writing courses), but haven't had any luck. :/
alicejcw Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I'll be heading to Boulder in the fall for speech pathology, I'm pretty stoked on moving to Colorado! Looking at housing options is a bit daunting though, especially coming from the land of super cheap rent.
avicus Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Hi, I've been admitted to the Electrical Engineering PhD program. Am from Southeast Asia.
avicus Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Hi grlu0701, I don't know about your department, but in my admission email, the DGS said that the financial aid package offered to me (TA-ship + fellowship) was offered to "less than 1%" of applicants. I don't know about what the rate is like for other forms of financial aid though, other posters can help here maybe? Hope this helps. grlu0701 and Hanyuye 1 1

Looking at housing options is a bit daunting though, especially coming from the land of super cheap rent. Yeah, I'm in the same boat! I've been scoping it out on craigslist and it looks a bit pricey. I guess that's what roommates are for!
grlu0701 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I'd advise anyone that is concerned about living costs to look outside of Boulder county. (I think that's the official name of the county?) I know that rent costs are only a fraction of a cost just over the county line and in many of the surrounding cities there are bus lines that regularly run into Boulder. This was the advice given to me by my fiancee's parents, who live about 20 min outside of Boulder. grlu0701 1
lumbarmoose Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Hi everyone, I too will (most likely) be at Boulder this coming fall! I've been accepted into their dual MA Anthropology and MBA program. I've begun looking into housing and it's daunting to say the least. Is anyone else considering on-campus graduate housing?
alicejcw Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I've been doing lots of research on housing, and thought I'd share some of what I've found. The graduate housing does look very reasonable, but I'd like to live somewhere with a little bit more character. Also, some of the apartments I'm looking at when I visit this weekend are closer to my program's building than the grad housing! I'm hesitant to look outside of Boulder proper because I'd like to avoid driving as much as possible. I'm used to being able to walk and bike everywhere I go, so I don't want to give that up. I've found some studios & 1-bedrooms in the $700-900 price range, so I think I'm going to try for one of those. I know it's more practical and cheaper to share, but I think I'll be a lot less stressed if I can come home to a place of my own every night. I may still change my mind though as I work out my budget for next year -- we should all be in touch in the next few months, maybe we can match up as roommates! Aside from craigslist and padmapper, I've found a few rental companies with online property listings. Here are links to some websites for them (no idea what kind of reputation they have, though). I'd really like to use the "Ralphie's List" search (http://ralphieslist.colorado.edu/), but it won't let me log in yet. http://www.bpmco.com/ http://www.accentrentals.com/index.htm http://www.matrixrentals.com/fallavailablelist.htm http://www.curent.com/ http://www.sunnysiderental.com/ One thing I've found with all of the realtors or property managers I've talked to so far is that they don't like to schedule showings for apartments more than a few days ahead of time. When I called a week in advance, multiple people have told me "call back the day before because it might be gone!" That makes it hard to plan ahead or make any decisions from out of state, so I'm really hoping my visit this weekend and being in Colorado for the summer will make my search easier. avicus Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 BTW $700-900 for a studio is a really good deal. I think the studios at Boulder Creek Apartments are easily $1200-1300, when I checked a few weeks ago.
