Anyone else going to UO in the fall? I'll be doing and MS in geography. I'm moving from Michigan, the trip should be a bit of an adventure.

I went there for a year of my undergrad, it's a great school with a beautiful campus. The allergy season there is HORRIBLE. I heard this is due to the topography, something about the wind just moving everything around, but not out of the area (no idea if this is really the reason). I guess the spring I was there was a record breaking year for pollen count; two steroid shots in the butt! Only other advice for the area is do not be surprised when you find it raining at the ski areas. I moved there from CO and drove to whatever is the nearest ski area, it was raining. I thought it must have been some freak weather and assumed they would close down the lifts any moment (I had never before heard of rain happening at a ski area during ski season). I turned around and drove the 2 hrs back to then find out that rain and skiing are a given for the north west. Also, forget about umbrellas, get your self a good water proof shell with a hood that has the bill on it.

Yep, the allergy season is horrible and it's a combination of topography and agriculture. Eugene is right in the bowl of the valley so we don't get a lot of wind through to clear out the pollen, and the area around Eugene is one of the United States' main grass seed producing areas so hay fever is horrible in the spring.

I went to U of O for undergrad; I had an amazing time, especially for rafting and white water activity.

Enjoy the restaurants that are there; Sweet Life is one of the best dessert places I have ever been to, The Jail has amazing teriyaki with large portions for a small price, and Cafe Roma has great drinks next to campus (but fills up very quickly with students studying!). Also, Eugene has great pizza places, namely The Pizza Research Institute and Pegasus Pizza (good prices on pitchers of Oregon microbrews as well).

My program starts this summer! Excited to be moving forward after months of indecision!

I've lived in Eugene for 11 years now.  4 for undergrad, then 1 year masters at Pacific U, then working, and now it looks like I'm returning to phd in the fall!  So if you have any questions, feel free to message me.  :)  I honestly really love it here.

Hey all. New to the forums. Applying to UO for fall 2014 for an MFA in Photography. Not the school most think of when it comes to art, but they've got great fellowship programs and I want to teach. Anybody else?

I spent a summer in Eugene a while back. So beautiful; you'll love it. I was more 'active' back then, and its an amazing place if you're into that! Plus, I also remember some great coffee shops and pizza places.

I will most likely be attending UO in the fall! I am waiting to hear back from one other program but as of right now UO is my top choice. I am moving from the east coast (yikes! scary!) so I'd love to chat with others who will be attending in the fall. :)

I am enrolling in a PhD program in their English Dept.

I am possibly attending UO as well (also English PhD). I'm considering one other offer at the moment, and it will be a very hard choice.

That is great to hear! It is tough when it comes down to decisions amongst great offers/institutions. I was waitlist at Buffalo which was originally one of my top choice programs, but I am really excited about Oregon and the offer they made so it is looking like that could just be it!

Let me know how your journey goes and if you decide to attend - what specific field are you going into?

I'm going into Victorian / 19C lit. How about you?

I visited Oregon last year for a conference and LOVED it; I think place/culture-wise it is my top choice--but the other program has a rockstar faculty member who is really big in my field.

That sounds great! I love hearing good things about the location - I've more recently fallen in love with my hometown so it is tough to think about leaving. I am also a big fan of Victorian lit, but I am going into the program with a structural emphasis on Film and Media Studies and a theoretical focus on 21st Century Contemporary.

Which program is the other top contender on your list?

U Florida. They have Pamela Gilbert (who is actually going to call and chat with me today -- when did my life get so interesting?).

That sounds awesome!! Best of luck to you during your phone call - how cool is that?? If only I could get Judith Butler to schedule a phone date with me...hmmm...XD

I think I would pass out if Judith Butler called me. :)

The phone call was awesome, which means my decision keeps getting more complicated because both places keep giving me more and more reasons to love them. There are low points about each place, too, but it's going to be a tough call.

I would most definitely pass out if Judith Butler called me XD

Good luck in making your decision!! It is tough when there are so many great features and even some low points to consider

Hello future Ducks! I'm going to UO this fall. I'll be doing an MS in geography. I'm an international student, moving from another side of the world (although I received my bachelor's in the US). The trip should be more than an adventure.

Obviousbicycle - Whereabouts are you from?? :)

I'm from Malaysia but I have a US bachelor's degree. :)

I have a question: did your department offer you guys the GTF funding? Have you received any contracts to sign yet?

Posted

I did receive funding (I believe it is GTF) but haven't gotten any contracts or specifics regarding the package yet in paper format. I know we are supposed to be getting information regarding registration at the end of next week so hopefully there will be more to come!
