That_One Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Anyone apply to Rutgers, Albany or Stony Brook this year? Nothing on the results page. Has anyone heard anything at all from any of these three departments?
ziraffa Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Nothing from Stony Brook. I keep threatening to email Michael Kimmel with a lot of capital letters.... But I don't.

I haven't heard anything from SBU either. I was going to email Kimmel tomorrow... Are you a masculinities person, too? Who is at the other schools you applied to?

owata Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I can speak to Rutgers - their website tells me that they haven't reached a decision yet. Of the six schools I've applied to, they're the only one I haven't seen any acceptances/rejections posted, so I suspect they're just taking a while getting themselves sorted out.
ziraffa Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I'm tinkering with masculinities stuff.... Not too serious about it (yet.... If I can study with Kimmel, though, I'll be doing more than tinkering.) I mostly consider myself in American studies, I think. I dunno--my current grad advisor tells me it's perfectly normal to go through some disciplinary schizophrenia at this point in my academic life. I've got Boyland on my summer reading list. You read it yet?
Socio Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 What in the world is goin on with Rutgers? Has anybody heard anything yet?
35M40 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Two people said they got acceptance calls from Zerubavel and one person got waitlisted, so I'm not all that optimistic at this point. I know they were aiming for a pretty small cohort but I think someone said it was smaller than they wanted this year because of funding. So I'm assuming I'm rejected, but I'm in that "Oh god it's late March and I'm totally screwed" mode so maybe I'm jumping to conclusions.

Yesterday I was replied that Zerubavel was at conference and will post the results next week.
35M40 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Oh snap. Thank you for that information! I guess I'm back to being nervous, haha.
taa Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I got accepted to Stony Brook, but alas, no funding whatsoever!!!! Stony Brook was where I really wanted to go, but I don't know if I want to take out loans to pay for tuition/living expenses.... I have debt as it is has anyone gotten funding there?
Tritonetelephone Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I got accepted to Stony Brook, but alas, no funding whatsoever!!!! Stony Brook was where I really wanted to go, but I don't know if I want to take out loans to pay for tuition/living expenses.... I have debt as it is has anyone gotten funding there? The letter said they weren't able to offer it to anybody. I haven't contacted them yet, I'm not sure what I'll say... I really wanted to go there too but there's just no way w/o funding. My understanding is A) they over-enrolled last year and had to give more funding than they expected (everyone that was accepted said yes), and the state of NY is doing terrible things to school budgets. What I don't understand is: why shrink their incoming cohort size if they weren't going to offer anyone funding anyway??
That_One Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 My sense is that they will have to give funding to everyone at somepoint or another. Therefore, a larger incoming cohort would mean having to give a lot of funding to a larger group of people in the years to come. But that's just my guess!
