nab190 Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I just got my admission to GW's Philosophy and Social Policy program!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!1 I was worried, because so many people had heard back already. GW is my top choice, ahhhhhhhhhh, I'm so excited!!!
nab190 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 congratulations nab!!! any funding? no :| :| apparently they only give 2 or 3 people funding in the MA program though, so i was kinda expecting it.
firefly85 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Does anyone know when the Elliott MA decisions will be going out? Do you think they may have mailed them last week since they are on spring break this week? If they didn't get them out last week that means they won't go out until next week (ugh!) unless the admissions people are actually working this week (yeah right...) Thoughts on this?
jpa Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I got an email today saying they will be mailing them out later this week, so hopefully we'll get them early next week!
nab190 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 So, has anyone accepted an offer to GW yet? I'm wondering who my classmates might be! Although...I haven't officially accepted yet, I'm just leaning very heavily toward it.
firefly85 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Did anyone else get the aforementioned e-mail for Elliott? I didn't and it's worrying me a bit! Especially since they lost my transcript and I had to send another one. It does say everything is complete on the website, but still you never know (since BU just told me they were missing one of my recommendations after I e-mailed them to find out what was going on. Thanks, I'm glad you didn't tell me that when I e-mailed to ask about my transcript weeks ago!). Hopefully we'll hear good news soon!
jpa Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Oops, sorry, I wasn't very specific with my post. I only received the email b/c I asked them to update my current mailing address. I was worried they overlooked my exp. date for my current address in Shanghai and mailed something there by mistake. So they told me letters will be mailed out this week.
invictus Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I assume you all saw the recent email from the Elliott school. Damn, no more prognosticating about when we may hear. So boring! "Elliott School graduate admission decisions will be available online on Friday, March 20. To access this information please log in to your online application. Decision letters are being mailed this week."
firefly85 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 i just got that e-mail too, well at least we know when they're coming! Too bad we don't know what time. Oh well another Friday spend frantically refreshing another admissions page. SAIS said they're trying to mail decisions out by this Friday so it should all be over for me by next week! Ahhhh, what will I obsess over when I know what schools I'm into (and the obvious answer is where I'm going to go, and then what's going to happen when I get there!).
happyhulalola Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Just got the e-mail too...a little nervous. Good luck on Friday!
stigMPA Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Pros: *Location, location, location *Diverse mix of mid-career professionals and straight-from-undergrads. Cons: *Ripoff tuition for the education received (one of my closest advisors said GW was an "awful value for the money") *Exorbitant cost of living --- Basically, ask yourself if GW would have made your shortlist if it weren't in DC. If you have something specific in mind in the District and/or funding - go for it. Otherwise, consider yourself warned.

Did your advisor make this comment specifically about its graduate public policy/administration program? If so, why did your advisor feel it was an "awful value for the money"? Your insight would be helpful. Thanks!
stigMPA Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Did your advisor make this comment specifically about its graduate public policy/administration program? If so, why did your advisor feel it was an "awful value for the money"? His comments were specifically about the MPA program. I don't want to mischaracterize what he said - the emphasis was more on "value" rather than the quality of the program. Put another way he told me it's not a bad program, but it's not great and for the price one could attend any MPA program in the country. Keep in mind, though, that I was a fairly strong applicant and have since been admitted to some great schools, so I suppose there might be some danger of taking advice meant for one context and applying it elsewhere. If I remember this conversation correctly (and that's a big "if" - it was one of many and months ago) he expressed concern about some administrative and personnel instabilities, as well as the quant. units. I probably didn't pry too deeply into this because it was clear he was advising me to look elsewhere.
jly Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I think for me its going to come down to security studies at either Pitt or GWU. Its tough because I am a PA resident and that cuts a lot of costs, plus I am much more likely to get funding from them I think.
dngo Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Finally got the email from Trachtenberg! In . It's about time!

I'm not sure I understand because the GW MPP/MPA is one of the least expensive programs. It's over 10k cheaper than Georgetown, no?
ashes75 Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Just got accepted with a 6k merit fellowship. notified by email.
stigMPA Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Are you talking about an MPA at the Elliott School? ... the GW MPP/MPA is one of the least expensive programs. It's over 10k cheaper than Georgetown, no? I refer to the GW (Trachtenberg) MPA/MPP, but I'm not talking about the absolute cost of attendance. To wit my advisor's comments had to do with the cost relative to the quality of the program. In other words, GW might be "10k cheaper" than Georgetown, but the reputation relative to Georgetown's is more than 10k worse, too. In his estimation the education was a poor value for the money.
Snowden12 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Elliott notices are out as they promised. I got an acceptance finally....I needed this one! How'd everyone else do? Good luck!
CardinalFang Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Accepted as well from GW Elliott (whew). The vigil continues for GTown SSp...
Rutabaga Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I refer to the GW (Trachtenberg) MPA/MPP, but I'm not talking about the absolute cost of attendance. GW is ranked the same as Gtown. No one in DC actually cares if you go to Gtown over GW or AU.
stigMPA Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 GW is ranked the same as Gtown. No one in DC actually cares if you go to Gtown over GW or AU. I was only passing along something that I was told by a very trusted advisor. He never steered me wrong in the past so I thought it might be useful to some people on these boards. If you don't appreciate my contributions you're welcome to that opinion, but I don't see a point in topics like "GW strengths/weaknesses" if users are discouraged from posting weaknesses. Was his "10k worse" reckoning hyperbolic? Maybe. But the fact remains that he said one could get a better education for the money elsewhere. Citing the US News Rankings tie doesn't refute that; it's just another point of information among many. That's the purpose of these boards, isn't it - to share information? I'm certainly not suggesting anyone rule out GW - in fact I went out of my way to point out that his comments might have been specific to my case. That said, I'm sorry but you're delusional if you think "no one in DC cares" where you went to school. It's true that in most cases it probably won't matter, but intangibles like alumni networks could mean the difference between a good job and a dream job - especially in an economy like this.
