kdilks Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Seems like a cool program, I read the Dear Colleague Letter a day or two ago. In glancing through the materials, though, this program is much more limited in scope, at least for the Nordic countries. It's not like EAPSI where you can propose to work with almost anyone with a professorship, you're limited to working with one of the Nordic Centers of Excellence (long-term grants provided to certain collaborative teams by the host country's NSF-equivalent). France didn't have any lists up and I didn't look at any of the Pacific countries, but I expect they're similarly limited. I didn't find anything that was remotely related to my area of study. http://www.vr.se/4.37eca2ee12a87a82021800045.html Interested Graduate Research Fellows are strongly encouraged to contact potential collaborators at Swedish Centers of Excellence. These include Berzelii Centers, Linnaeus Environments and Centers of Gender Excellence. Please follow the links to the right for more information on these host institutions. The Centers of Excellence are examples of institutions but other Swedish research groups can also host NSF Graduate Research Fellows.
InquilineKea Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 What happens if we get a NSF Fellowship and get into a grad program that gives us a 1-year fellowship? Would we simply lose that 1-year fellowship because we can't defer NSF?
Eigen Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Why wouldn't you be able to defer the NSF? I deferred my first year of fellowship to use another year of the fellowship I was currently on.
guttata Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 What happens if we get a NSF Fellowship and get into a grad program that gives us a 1-year fellowship? Would we simply lose that 1-year fellowship because we can't defer NSF? With the NSF you have 5 years to use 3 years of funding, in any way you want. 3 years consecutively; 1 year on, 1 year off, 1 year on, 1 year off; 2 years on, 2 off, etc etc etc... I have a 4 year fellowship at my current school and a 5 year plan to graduate. If I'm awarded this year, I'll use 2 years of my current fellowship (this year and next year) and then finish up with my 3 years of NSF funding.
InquilineKea Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Oh cool - I see - thanks so much for the information!
Pitangus Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 (edited) I think what confuses people is that "deferred" and "reserved" are two different terms according to the NSF GRFP. What most people refer to as "deferring" is really called "reserving" by the NSF (accepting the fellowship when you win it, but not taking the funding for a year in order to use some other funding source). As guttata explains, you are allowed two reserve years within a five year award period. Deferring means putting off your entire five year award period, and that is generally not allowed except in extreme circumstances (e.g. serious medical problems or military duties). anthro.fish Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Originally I won a Graduate Division Fellowship (at my university) for one year. When they found out I won the NSF GRFP, they boosted my first year fellowship by $2000 and guaranteed me a second year of funding through TAships (this is their standard operating procedure for NSF Fellows, designed to entice students to attend). So, including the three tenure years with NSF, I ended up with a five year funding package. So sweet. SensLu and Chande 2
radiomars Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Well, I hope none of you used OpenOffice like me. Just had my application rejected because the margins of my essays were 0.79", which is the default for OpenOffice for some unknown and painful reason. They deleted my app

They deleted my app That's a shame and I'm sorry to hear that. That being said, wasn't that something you checked before submission? It does state pretty clearly in the program solicitation that they require one-inch margins... Good luck next year if you decide to reapply!

guttata Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Yeah, at the end of the day, it's an oversight on my part, but it was my first time using OpenOffice and I didn't think twice about the default margins. Why would you assume they'd be 1.00? Even real MS Office defaults to 1.25...
Dash Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Why would you assume they'd be 1.00? Even real MS Office defaults to 1.25... Assume Verb Suppose to be the case, without proof: "afraid of what people are going to assume". I think you answered your own question I get that we're all anxious during this waiting period---no need to get testy though.
Chande Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 Why would you assume they'd be 1.00? Even real MS Office defaults to 1.25...Weird. Mine defaults to 1.00. I have the 2010 version, so maybe they changed it?
Usmivka Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 (edited) I have two versions ago, still 1.0". My guess is radiomars changed their defaults for something else prior. Edited January 4, 2013 by Usmivka
anxiousanthro Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Is it really March 1st that we find out? For some reason I remember reading something about April, which felt really late!
Pitangus Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Is it really March 1st that we find out? For some reason I remember reading something about April, which felt really late! Last year the notifications were sent out very early in the morning on March 30th. I think in other recent years they were sent out in early April. People have posted the exact dates in previous NSF GRFP threads.
Pez Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Anybody know if sequestration is going to have an effect on the number of fellowships awarded? Apparently the NSF's budget could be cut by 586 million, hard to imagine they wouldn't cut back on the GRFP fund too...
magpies Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) I got my notification of acceptance two days ago. Does anyone know how to view comments that the reviewers made on your proposal? Edited February 15, 2013 by magpies TrainDreaming, English_2012applicant and OrangeSoc 3
theoretician Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I got my notification of acceptance two days ago. Does anyone know how to view comments that the reviewers made on your proposal? Wait, what!! I thought the results are announced end of March/beginning of April?
giles Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I got my notification of acceptance two days ago. Does anyone know how to view comments that the reviewers made on your proposal? Are you for serious?? Dude. MIND. BLOWN. Alright, now I'm nervous as hell --- I wasn't supposed to have to worry about this for another month!!
SensLu Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I hear some people get them early and they finish announcements by April. I wonder what category he's in? Mine was life sciences.
Pitangus Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 From the FAQs: Announcement Questions 1. When will I be notified of the decision? All eligible applicants will be notified of the results of their application by e-mail around early April, 2013. NSF will post a list of the 2013 awardees and honorable mentions at www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp/ at the same time notifications are sent. 2. Will I be able to view my rating Sheets? Applicants are provided with the unedited, verbatim comments from their rating sheets around the same time that award announcements are made. Rating sheets will be accessible inside your FastLane account. Please note that once the FastLane system has switched over to a new application cycle, it will not be possible to view rating sheets from previous competitions. Applicants are strongly encouraged to save a copy of their rating sheets before the new application cycle begins. 3. Is there any way to receive advance notification of the results of my application? The only applicants who receive notifications prior to the official award announcement are those whose applications were returned without review due to non-compliance with the guidelines contained in the2013 Program Solicitation. All reviewed applicants will be notified of the results at the same time – around early April. We are not able to inform individual applicants of their results prior to the official announcement. agarcia59 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Dammit Magpies, that near heart attack almost ruined my night.
anxiousanthro Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Does anyone know how to change the "graduate program" portion of your application? Or if this is even possible? The offer I am probably going to accept is different from the school I put in my application...!
