I'm hoping to get a Ph.D after the masters. What are you planning to do? I'm hoping to research/teach. How did you like Columbia!?

Anyway, good luck with everything.

I am also waiting for Columbia. PhD Social Admin track. Hopefully will hear something soon.

ugh yay! thank god, someone else in my shoes. why do you think they are taking so damn long? i'm so afraid that because they are taking so long it means i'm about to be rejected...i heard that people get accepted in february and then they reject people in march...

what do you think your chances are of getting in? is it one of your top choicse?

Not too sure what my chances are, but I will wager on not too good. I am in a strange situation, and whether I get in will depend on whether this particular advisor will take me on. So it is a waiting game, but I think I will have an answer soon. I was contacted in February and so am just waiting for the answer. As far as preferences, I do not rank schools. I only applied to schools I actually really wanted to attend. So it all boils down to financial and advisory support :)

I would say don't worry to much. Seeing as you are a product of CUSSW, assuming you did very well they should take you. The other schools on your list are also top notch. The people at UC are phenomenal. I have been in contact with them for years and they have produced some great scholarship. Brandeis is also a fine choice.

sorry, just ignore me or tell me if i am prying too much... but which professor are you hoping to work with? there are some really great ones in social admin., it's a really popular track. Also, why did they contact you in February and what did they ask about? Anyways thanks for sharing! I don't know why I am so nervous...even though I am getting my masters here I don't think it really matters...it's almost like they know me too well- therefore they know my flaws and my weaknesses, so maybe it might hurt me...

I think I will keep that and my interests to myself for the immediate time being. Because then it would be very easy to identify the potential professors at the school. My interests are very interdisciplinary in nature, and will require a lot of coordination with several schools and programs, so they contacted me early. And while CUSSW has been very accommodating with me and my interests in the past, I don't think they will be so much this time :) I guess time will tell!

FSIA,

I will let you know if I hear anything from them...

so far...not a peep. :-(

Thanks and same here. I also haven't heard from them, but It is my hope I hear from them soon because coordinating several visits will take a lot of time and money :).

FSIA, heard anything yet?

all is silent on my front still :-(

Silent on my end as well. I am a bit disappointed that schools would give applicants so little time to mull over decisions. If it is anything like the other school at CU I applied to, they already made their decision, but just have not communicated it to you yet.

Disappointing really. I call it the "top" school effect, where top schools figure they can do this because they figure if you get mad and turn them down, there would be a slew of others ready to jump to the admissions decision.

Anyone applying to PhD programs in Social Work/Welfare?

I feel like the only one on this forum and would like to talk to someone about stuff...

I am going to apply for my PhD for 2010 admission. Right now, I still waiver between a PhD or a DSW, though. I'm trying to get motivated to study for the GRE, but knowing my ineptness at math, this is proving a difficult task. I've narrowed the universities I will apply to based on geography first and "fit" second. I'm not prepared to spend 4-6 years of my life in a city I don't like! I'm considering (and will apply to) the University of Washington, Portland State, and UC Berkeley.

Wow you sound just like me in your logic. My first considerations were geographic locations of the schools. I absolutely needed a winter, which by default ruled out most of the south and west coast. Most of the schools I looked at were in the northeast and midwest. Then I looked at fit.

Anyway, you should be considering a PhD at this point. While many say that the DSW is for those with more of a practitioner's focus, if you dissect the curriculum of the very few schools that offer both, you will notice little to no difference between the two. Also, many schools are beginning to phase out offering the DSW because of "rigor and prestige" worries.

U Washington is an excellent school of Social Work. I am a personal fan of Mark Courtney and the work he does on foster care. I was very sad to see him leave the University of Chicago. The other two on your list are good as well.

Have people received their offers and rejections for this year and made their decisions?

Yes, I think that is why I am leaning toward the PhD (despite my deficiency in math!). I'm not in any way confident that I will get accepted into any of the three schools, but I'm willing to try! For those of you who are waiting for confirmation (or rejection) this year, can you give me some indication of your GRE scores? Thanks.

I would love to hear an update from anyone in this thread...I think I might start a new one with questions about preparing to apply for PhD programs. I am so curious!

Well, I've only just finished submitting my applications. Unfortunately, my math score on the GRE was abysmal, but I'm hoping my decent verbal and written scores and a very strong statement will offset that. I did apply to the University of Washington, Portland State, and UC Berkeley. I've already resigned myself to not getting accepted (due in large part to my GRE scores), though. I don't anticipate getting my rejection letters/emails until March or April, so can't provide an update at this stage.

Well i really wish you luck! If you don't get in this round, would you apply for the next?

I have a question for those that haven applied for PhD...how much research experience do you have? How important do you think this is weighted against the GRE's, graduate records, etc.?

I found other humans that applied to PhD programs!

I applied to Albany, Case Western, Smith College, Denver and WashU for SW but haven't heard a peep.

Unfortunately my undergraduate grades were not too hot, but that was a life time ago. I've tried to make up for it with my master's program work and great references, but I doubt it will be enough.

For what its worth, I got a 550 on the verbal, 770 on the math and 4.5 on the analytical. I was hoping to break 1400 to make up for my undergrad GPA but it just didn't happen. I assume they would want to see a stronger score in verbal, but maybe they'll like the math score. We shall see.

JesseS: Good luck to you! I'm planning on applying two years from now after I complete the MSW. I am starting the program Fall 2010. May I ask what schools you have applied to? I am really trying to geat a head start on the PhD application process. Thanks!

Well, I have a bit of an update...I was accepted to Portland State! I'm still waiting to hear from University of Washington and UC Berkeley. Just so you know, my GRE math scores really sucked...to the point my brother asked if I have learning difficulties! I did do well on the verbal and written portions of the GRE, though. I think having a very strong personal statement, a defined and focused area of study, and good letters of reference makes a huge difference.

Hey! Congrats!!! So, I also applied to the social work and social research program at PSU...I have not heard anything! I hope this is not bad news--yet! I was accepted to an Applied Psych program in Claremont...but I would really like to stay in Portland. Did you just get the email or did they call you for an interview? I am still hopeful. I would love to hear more details.

I received an email that said the official letter would follow in the post. At first, I thought the email was generic, so was pleasantly surprised to see it was personalised and mentioned my research interest! When I checked the results page on the forum, someone else was accepted last week. You have to remember that their deadline for admissions was the beginning of January, so it hasn`t been very long. Waiting is awful, but I think there`s still hope! Good luck!
