What i have seen so far is that most universities only invite either accepted or waitlisted candidates to open houses, I have also heard that some make a shortlist and invite all short listed candidates, later they will choose admitted students from this shortlist. So yes, being invited could mean good news although if you were already admitted they would likely have told you already. In conclusion it probably means that you are either shortlisted or waitlisted.

Chicago answered, finally, just as expected, anothe rejection , this is the last one, the tally is 5 rejections, 2 acceptances and waitlist. We'll see what happens with the waitlist and with a Masters in Holland I also applied to, keeping my fingers crossed.

I got my rejection from Chicago too. I had hopes in that.

Now i have just UMD, Northwestern and Washington (CL) to wait for. If i get admission from any of them it will probably be my top choice.

Thanks for replying

but why would they invite me to an open house if I am wait- or short-listed? They did not even say we would refund your trip?!

Is there anyone here who has been invited to an open house and got rejected?

I am desperate.

@mq1:  Why don't you e-mail them and ask?  It can be difficult to interpret messages sometimes, and it is best to ask those who actually know (i.e., the people at GMU) rather than people here who would just be speculating.  You could say something like: "Thank you for the invitation!  I am very interested in the program, but I was wondering about the purpose of the open house and my current status.  Have admission decisions been made yet or is the open house for interview / informational purposes?"

Thanks but I am afraid I will just keep them busier than they are already.

Hi mq1 I think you need not worry too much.

Have you checked the result page for more information? Judging from the fact that the only acceptance of last year came out on 11 April, I would entertain the possibility of "short-listed" over "wait-listed".

In any case, I will prepare well and rock the faculty.

If I were you, I would try to ask *politely* for possible financial/housing support. You may have some clue for the size of the short-list judging from their reply (e.g., if funding is provided, the number of invitees tend to be smaller...)

Good luck! I wish you are greeted "Congratulations! You are IN!" when you land there.

Really, I think that it's fine to e-mail them and ask.  It's one (annoying) thing to e-mail a department multiple times asking for news, but in this case they have already made contact with you and you are just responding.  Having some sense of the purpose of the event is important, so that you can be mentally prepared.

I got my rejection from UMD. It is ABSOULUTLY better than not hearing from them. I have just Northwestern and Washington to hear from. Congratualtions to admittees.

Also got my UMD rejection this AM, and I don't feel nearly as bad about it as I thought I would. Definitely better than not knowing until April, as it seems that has happened to people before according to the results page! Kudos to those who are getting acceptances. :)

I had just had my fourth rejection from UC Boulder. I am not getting any acceptance and Kudos to all those that got an acceptance.

I'm sorry to hear that, mq1. I was in the same situation last year, but the additional year really helped me to make my application a lot better. Are you waiting on any other schools?

On a slightly different note: Has anybody else heard from UC Boulder (esp. the people who did not get invited to the Open House) or Georgetown Sociolinguistics?

A friend of mine was accepted to Georgetown for a PhD in Linguistics about a month ago, and she works on Sociolinguistics. Sorry :(

I still haven't heard from UMD! The results page indicates that rejections have been sent out, and I haven't gotten one, but their open house was last weekend and I wasn't invited. Anyone else in this position?

I inquired recently (mid February) as to my status and was told that they were still evaluating applications and would have more information in March. I don't want to keep bugging them...

Thanks, goldheartmountaintop. I know some people have gotten accepted , but someone posted on the notice board that they were still reviewing socio applications... Since people have also been getting rejections for a while, I've just been wondering what's going on with the people who haven't heard anything...

Ah, I see. Well, I hope you hear back, and that you hear good news!

I'm waiting to hear from Georgetown (socio) also, but I assume I've been rejected.  Goldheartmountaintop, does your friend plan on accepting the offer?

Hi everyone! How likely will those programs call you to tell you that you get off the wait-list? I'm actually asking about the chance of being CALLED rather than the chance of being accepted because I have recently changed my mobile phone number (a bad idea, I know, but it's irreversible). So now my number does not match the one I put on my CV when I applied. Do you think I should email these programs and tell them this change? I know that MIT and UConn like to give surprise calls but I'm not waiting for their decisions. So far I have not been called by any of the programs where I am expecting some news.

Another thing is that I'm going for a conference trip in early April for a week (1/4 - 8/4, a bad idea, I know, but it's irreversible) so I won't be able to reply emails promptly. I don't know how bad the situation will be but I assume I can check my email at least once a day. Do you think I should also notify them this matter?

My common sense tells me that I should definitely notify them both issues timely. But part of me really appreciates the economy principle of procrastination and I definitely don't want to annoy those people who already have a lot of work to deal with. What would you do if you were me?

I'd send off a quick, informative email to all of your remaining programs with your updated phone number. That's not annoying, and I doubt they'd read it as such as long as you're professional about it.

What do you mean by responding to emails promptly? Just make sure you check it every other day, or get a data plan on your phone for like a week so that you can check your emails there. They're not going to pass you over because you don't answer your phone or the number shows up as disconnected.

Oh thanks! I will definitely get a data plan. Hope my 4-year-old iPhone will bring me some good news so the data plan is worth the money

Btw I just found another rejection from Rutgers posted on the result page. Not sure why they are kicking people out of the waiting list at this stage...

There are 3 rejections on 14 March. It seems that some admitted students have accepted their offers.
