Linguistics 2013

Thanks ladyling and Phonolog! I will email Stony Brook and ask for a possible extension. Haven't thought about this option before because I really don't want to make them feel bad. It's clear now that it will be worse to me and to them if I withhold my situation. Honesty is always the right direction!

I've just realize that I might be implicitly affecting other people's preference by telling them mine in such a way. I would like to clarify that Stony Brook is NOT a safety school for me (btw my safety has rejected me...) nor do I suggest anybody treat it as one. Their research is interesting and their atmosphere is excellent. Their graduate students are very kind and informative (of course, nobody can defeat fuzzylogician, in my opinion). I happen to know that they are hiring experimental/computational experts. I believe they will grow into a stronger program in the near future. If I finally land there, I will be very happy.

My preference to go elsewhere is only based on research match and some other personal reasons (my boyfriend is planning to apply for a visiting position in MA).

Lastly, there is only less than a month and (hopefully) every uncertainty will be cleared. Let me offer my best wishes to people that are still waiting (esp. Phonolog and mq1) or debating.

Has anyone else decided to go to Hawaii? I officially accepted their offer a couple of days ago, and I would love to get in contact with my future cohort members. Feel free to PM me!

Has Michigan State University announced results? Has any one got an acceptance?

I got accepted to their Master's program today. I applied for MA, so I don't know about PhD applicants.

Hi guys! This is my first post here. I got accepted to Syracuse's linguistics MA program with TA ship and tuition waiver from French department. I just want to know if you guys know about the linguistics program in Syracuse. Is it a good one? I am an international students, so I am not very familiar with the US university rankings. So please give me some advice if you can. Thank you soooo much.

Are you currently in US? I think you should make a visit and see for yourself since they will fund you.

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I am currently in the US. So you mean I should just email them to check if I can go and see? Another thing that really bothers me is that I am also admitted to University of Florida for their French program but not sure if I will be funded there. So I am now really struggled between these two schools. I do not know which one is better.

Yes. Ask them to see if you can set up a visit, so that you can have a talk with a professor(s) that interests you.

Are you in a situation where you have to make a decision right now? I would imagine that you have time at least till April 15.

Does the program at U Florida interest you more than Syracuse does so? What is your research interest?

Is the decision on funding pending? Regardless, I would also make a visit if it is possible.

I don't know anything about those two universities. Yet, visiting helps when what you read is not enough for you to make a big decision.

If you can't make visits, send emails to your potential advisors or those who seem to be doing something similar to what you would like to be doing in the future. They may or may not respond to your emails. But either way, I'd say you've got nothing to lose by doing so.

I need to make a decision within next week for Syracuse, and the funding for UF is still pending. I am kind of worried now. For Syracuse it's Linguistics department I got in while for UF it is French department I got in. But I like both of the programs and I was contacted by both of the POI. And I do like them both. And that makes the decision harder.

I am also admitted to Syracuse and offered a Chinese TAship. In fact, they don't have a linguistics department. The program is under The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics. I believe that's why they are able to give TAship in language teaching.

I am not sure what you have studied as a undergrad. The courses at Syracuse seem elementary and may be fit for someone who has no background in linguistics at all. However, if you have some training in linguistics, you probably do not want to take Intro to Linguistics again. (Other courses seem to start from the most basics as well)

Why do you have to make a decision within the next week? I have never been given such notice.

Did they tell you anything about summer support? To the best of my knowledge, the stipend is just adequate for living in Syracuse.

Hi there Chase Wang, I did both of my undergrad and master in French, but my previous research concentrated on second language acquisition, and I have already took the intro course in this field. They did not mention the summer support. And I am still considering if I should take this offer. But thanks for keeping me posted.

Just withdrew my name from candidacy at Georgetown. Hopefully that frees someone in Socio up (who's got the funds to attend...).

Where have you decided to attend?

UC Davis!  :) It's a less prestigious name/younger program, but the faculty were so welcoming (and so was the funding package). I'd be happy to go into depth about it with anyone who PMs me.

Hi, I am a Malaysian intending to specialise in heritage linguistics. After having been rejected flat out by about a dozen universities I finally got an offer from Minnesota out of the blue last Friday. Hawaii indicated their interest in me later that day and they were willing to top up my stipend from my external funding. My dilemma here is that I personally prefer Hawaii as they have been in touch more and I am more familiar with the programme. On the other hand, I have had nearly zero contact with Minnesota other than some emails to the programme graduate director to inquire about the availability of PhD places.

Although Hawaii has not given me an official offer, I have held off on accepting Minnesota's offer. Generally how long will I have to accept an offer? How would be a good way to inquire about the official offer from Hawaii without coming off as pushy?

They usually have a deadline until you should reply, which I think is April 15 for everywhere.

I think you can just simply tell them that look, I've got another offer from another university, but I am also strongly considering your university, and so I would appreciate if you can let me know about your decision as soon as you can.

Awesome, Phonolog, I was hoping that was you!

On a completely unrelated note: Is there anybody else who has not heard anything from Colorado? I know people have gotten acceptances, waitlistings, and rejections, but I have simply heard nothing...

Congrats 1000x Phonolog!

But U Michigan does offer you funding, right? I ask this because you include it in the "all unfunded" group.
