DontHate Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 You'll be easy to identify: you're the guy who looks just like samuel beckett.
Deadinthewater Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I chatted with donthate for a while and I (among others) was laughing pretty hard. I imagine DH to be the type of person whose abrasive personality opens as many doors as it closes. But if someone has the time, could you critique the opening of my SOP? "Like Foucault, Derrida, and the intellectual giants before me, I have positioned my academic development alongside an intensely personal investment in The Grad Cafe. In the words of Jameson, 'forums were really important for my growth as a scholar.'" Tips? comp12, cicada123 and murkyama 3

t1racyjacks Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 OT but I am freaking out because my friends in the STEM fields are already getting emails for interviews and all
NowMoreSerious Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 OT but I am freaking out because my friends in the STEM fields are already getting emails for interviews and all don't feel bad. Their probably just put all of those STEM apps into a computer algorithm, which then sends interview emails to everybody over a certain number. The whole thing probably takes .147 seconds. In the humanities we do not operate that way......yet. Conscia Fati and isawnewton 1 1
ProfLorax Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Well, my mom says I'm going to get into all the programs, so I'm going to bet pretty highly on myself. viggosloof28, Sursie, waparys and 3 others 6

Two Espressos Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I have one very specific reason to highly doubt the likelihood of this occurance. Let me guess: you think I'll be shut out this spring? murkyama 1
practical cat Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) Two espressos is going to get into all of the places. All of them. ETA by which I mean even to the places where no applications were sent. Edited December 21, 2012 by girl who wears glasses
DontHate Posted December 21, 2012 Author Posted December 21, 2012 Let me guess: you think I'll be shut out this spring? No, not you. I think you'll get into 2 places.
DontHate Posted December 21, 2012 Author Posted December 21, 2012 I should probably not be telling you guys this, but I'm actually a clairvoyant. The only future I can't see is my own [cruel twist of fate!] thatjewishgirl 1
Two Espressos Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) No, not you. I think you'll get into 2 places. Hm, I can't tell if this is a joke about my username or an actual prediction about my impending admissions results. Edited December 21, 2012 by Two Espressos
Magical Realist Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I, for one, am down for a little tongue-in-cheek wagering. OP: I'll say your list is solidly lofty, so my "money" is on one. And for fairness, here are the wholly irrelevant stats: 170/160/5.5, 3.75 from large state school with solid programs in my undergrad majors. I posted my specific list on the other thread, but 13 total, 3-4 Ivy, 5 or so well-ranked state, and some largely solid states to round it all out. It's all in the hands of the adcoms now anyhow; let's have some fun with it.

Magical Realist Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Your assessment, though generous, makes me doubt your alleged "gift." But if it does play out like you're predicting, I'm gonna suggest we go into business together telling potential applicants in advance which schools will admit them, and then splitting the difference on the money saved applying, sending GREs, etc. I did a short stint in marketing, so I really think this could work out.
Two Espressos Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Yeah, I can't wait to return to this thread once admissions info starts coming out. murkyama 1
DontHate Posted December 21, 2012 Author Posted December 21, 2012 Sure thing, let's go into business.
