I chatted with donthate for a while and I (among others) was laughing pretty hard. I imagine DH to be the type of person whose abrasive personality opens as many doors as it closes. But if someone has the time, could you critique the opening of my SOP?

"Like Foucault, Derrida, and the intellectual giants before me, I have positioned my academic development alongside an intensely personal investment in The Grad Cafe. In the words of Jameson, 'forums were really important for my growth as a scholar.'"

Tips?

don't feel bad. Their probably just put all of those STEM apps into a computer algorithm, which then sends interview emails to everybody over a certain number. The whole thing probably takes .147 seconds. In the humanities we do not operate that way......yet.

Let me guess: you think I'll be shut out this spring?

No, not you. I think you'll get into 2 places.

Hm, I can't tell if this is a joke about my username or an actual prediction about my impending admissions results.

I, for one, am down for a little tongue-in-cheek wagering.

OP: I'll say your list is solidly lofty, so my "money" is on one.

And for fairness, here are the wholly irrelevant stats:

170/160/5.5, 3.75 from large state school with solid programs in my undergrad majors.

I posted my specific list on the other thread, but 13 total, 3-4 Ivy, 5 or so well-ranked state, and some largely solid states to round it all out.

It's all in the hands of the adcoms now anyhow; let's have some fun with it.

I think you'll get into 6, including 2 ivies, and 1 waitlist at an ivy.

Your assessment, though generous, makes me doubt your alleged "gift." But if it does play out like you're predicting, I'm gonna suggest we go into business together telling potential applicants in advance which schools will admit them, and then splitting the difference on the money saved applying, sending GREs, etc.

I did a short stint in marketing, so I really think this could work out.

OK, clairvoyant. Do me. (I promise to be snide if you're wrong.)

You will get into Wisconsin, Brandeis and Buffalo, get waitlisted at Vanderbilt, get rejected from Harvard, Rutgers, Berkeley, Brown, and Cornell. UPenn will never get back to you.
