davidipse Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 (edited) Anyone else read poetry for fun? Currently reading Anne Sexton's Love Poems and Eavan Boland's In a Time of Violence. I've been wanting to read Boland for a long time. Predicting, from a few snippets, that I'll probably like her, I'm holding off for now so as not to make Stanford even more attractive for myself. Just came, in reading (to establish relevance), across this curious contumely re LA by some guy named Bruce Bliven: "Here is the world's prize collection of cranks, semi-cranks, placid creatures whose bovine expression shows that each of them is studying, without much hope of success, to be a high-grade moron, angry or ecstatic exponents of food fads, sun-bathing, ancient Greek costumes, diaphragm breathing and the imminent second coming of Christ." toasterazzi Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 I didn't love Divergent, though I thought I would. I just couldn't buy into the world enough, though I liked the protagonist. FIOS I liked infinitely more. Have you seen the trailer for the film adaptation yet? I liked Divergent well enough. I've heard the other two books aren't nearly as good, but I tend to finish out series when I start them even if I'm agitated (*ahem*Twilight*cough*). And yes I've seen the TFIOS trailer. I'm just planning to go in and bawl. That's the only way it'll work. Will Grayson, Will Grayson was one of the best books I've ever read. I actually just finished rereading TFIOS yesterday; still amazing. The Divergent series was a HUGE waste of my life and I'm still really pissed that I read the whole trilogy. The best newish book that I read recently was Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. Do y'all have any new YA to recommend? I'll have to add this Will Grayson book to my list. I've heard a lot of good things about Eleanor and Park so that'll probably be next on my YA list. I also plan to read The Maze Runner soonish, mostly because there's a movie coming out for it soon too. Also, I already watched The Spectacular Now and it kinda made me want to go back and read the book.
Ozymandias Melancholia Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 (edited) Anyone else read poetry for fun? Currently reading Anne Sexton's Love Poems and Eavan Boland's In a Time of Violence. I really love Boland's work, especially that collection. Have you read her memoir? I've been considering picking it up for some time. Anne Carson is probably my favorite contemporary poet, though. tingdeh Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 One of my favorite books; the movie, however, is more difficult to sustain. As for me: On the Road by Kerouac--makes me feel horribly stationary, but I'm enjoying it! My favourite novel! I have read it twice now...so of course I've applied to the West Coast. Sigh.
