Um so I keep calling people by their wrong names. First, the Billy thing. THEN I wrote an e-mail to the DGS and called her by a completely unrelated name (well, both have 'G' in them...). She kindly corrected me, but I am MORTIFIED. Will this totally ruin my chance for good funding?? (Kidding. Kind of.)

Nah. Getting somebody's name wrong is totes boss.

I got impatient and e-mailed the department to check my status. Got a nice surprise! Apparently they're just waiting for funding information. So if you're feeling curious, perhaps drop them a line :)

I'm so nervous now and I do prefer waiting than hearing bad news :( Has your application status changed too? I don't even have the courage to check mine. Anyways, I'm so happy for you that you have more than one choice. Best of luck :)

Ah, another week is about to end. Has anyone heard from Penn State yet? Also just got rejected by San Diego and waitlisted by WUSTL. Not bad. ^_^

Hey Rose, thanks! No, my application status is still in review. The DGS said they would be meeting around today or very soon to finalize decisions. I hope you get some good news!

And Gustav: no call from Penn State yet.......... but congrats on the waitlist at WUSTL, maybe we'll be classmates! :)

interview has been scheduled. It's a full-day thing, sitting in on classes and dinner with students included. Eep!

BTW, would you mind sharing what your area of interest is, Gustav?

Of course not.I am primarily interested (wait, interview nightmare flashbacks! ) in the intersection of memory (individual and collective), trauma, and the ethical. And I plan to research in contemporary Chinese literature. What about yours?

Oh no, I didn't want to trigger any trauma!

That sounds like a cool area to study. Would you be doing more modern stuff (like postwar)? Contemporary Chinese also sounds awesome, and Penn State would definitely be a great place to do that. (Knock on wood)

I'm still kind of interested in everything, but what I proposed to study is postwar Dutch, German, American, and to a lesser extent French literature. I'd like to discuss gender and identity problems, though at this point I'm still figuring out what my focus will be. I'd also love the opportunity to pick up an Asian language!

Yeah, I'd certainly like to look at modern Chinese and English literature. I was very interested in WWII literature (including those about the traumatic experiences during the Pacific War). Only I turned to contemporary works when I found that, unlike their Anglophone and German counterparts, Chinese literature about war experiences are mostly, if not exclusively, produced by the later generation.

And, yes, Penn State is great. Right now I am trying hard not to think (too much and too often) about it though, because it is such a great fit and a rejection from there will definitely hurt real bad. ^_^

Wow, four national literatures! That is really impressive. I am especially envious of your ability to really read German and French books in the original. I guess it is definitely harder to pin-down a set of interests when you have so many national literatures to explore!

I'd like to pick up German for PhD studies. If you decide to learn Chinese, maybe we can help each other if we really become classmates one day (which will certainly be great news for me, because it will mean either I am off the waitlist at WUSTL or accepted by Penn State, both big YAY! :P)

Radio silence from Penn State on this end, too. I can't help but think that the notifications (in general) are going to have to speed up soon.

Hope someone's gotten some good news recently. And DontHate: good luck; you'll nail it. When are you going out there?

Me too

Excellent! I was beginning to think I was the only one on here! What are your areas of specialisation? Who would you like to work with? Did you visit?

Finally potential cohort members!

I've visited a friend who studies there, but never actually visited the department. I've been to Boston and Cambridge lots of times. My areas are vaguely 20th-century and Contemporary Latin American/Jewish diaspora, so there's a lot of trans-atlantic Yiddish & German dialogue going on there. Lately I've been particularly interested in Brazilian fiction. But who knows, I have some other languages I want to fit in there, and many other random interests. The profs I mentioned were Sorenson and Wisse.

Still nothing from Penn State, guys? The wait is killing me!

No envy, but two acceptances and the wait is killing you !!! I'm already dead then :(

You should definitely learn German! I may stand alone here, but I actually think it's quite nice to listen to. Listening to French radio, on the other hand, makes me want to jump in the nearest river.

Can you read and write Chinese? My mother is a native Chinese speaker, so she keeps scolding me for learning other languages and avoiding Chinese... I can understand a moderate amount, but my speaking is atrocious.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm totally shocked/thrilled with how things have turned out so far! I'm just an impatient person. In any case, I really really hope things work out for you!

Yeah! I'm currently finishing up a MS Architecture degree (history/theory/criticism). I study 20th century French Lit and how and why and if architecture-space theory can be used to generate fictional settings. I plan to specialize in (loosely) the same thing. I've also been learning Japanese here. Interested in Victorian Lit as well. I've been in touch over the last few months with Tom Conley, although he isn't necessarily a member of Comp Lit but sort of associated with it. He teaches in French Lit and Visual Studies. His wife, Verena, is part of the Comp Lit department. I lived in Cambridge but have never visited the department...

Also, I received confirmation of receipt for my application on the website after submitting, but never one via e-mail.. It's not possible to check app statuses for Harvard, right?

Conley, Laura Frahm, and Giuliana Bruno would be incredible guides for me as far as my interest in the site/space of screening, spatiality, and "visual constructions" of space go. I'm in film studies, broadly interested in the relations between screens and their spaces in visual culture at large, with particular interests in paracinema/experimental cinema/moving image arts. The Harvard Visual Studies program would be absolutely wonderful, but one can only hope. I have not established contact with faculty members, and it's something I wish I had done. But to be honest, I was too abashed.

In any case, for visual studies I know that you receive a call one day, borne on dulcet tones and smelling of roses. I don't know the protocol for comp lit.
