Halcyon17 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 Oh, hey! If you mean the University of South Carolina, you're applying to my soon to be alma mater. Fun little coincidence I don't know which part of me said it was smart to do two reading-intensive classes, my thesis and two of the most prestigious MUN conferences when I knew I would be waiting for decisions. This has literally been my train of thought this morning: "I should check my South Carolina app...I need to do a little more research on the debt crisis for LiMUN...and I know absolutely nothing about my topics for ScotMUN which means I probably should start that...and oh yeah, I should check when I have a meeting with my diss supervisor although I don't think he remembers me..." Scatterbrained, much? Don't worry everyone - it should be over soon!

Halcyon17 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 I also applied to the University of South Carolina! Cool! Sadly I don't know much about your programs, but if you have any questions about Columbia, SC, feel free to ask. I can answer questions about professors in the chemistry/marine science departments, though, and I can tell anyone right now that if you're applying to psychology, the Department Chair specializes in throwing people--he's my sensei in aikido, and he's a seventh-dan black belt lol.

Did you enjoy the school and atmosphere? I visited shortly over the summer, but it was hard to tell when the campus was empty.
Halcyon17 Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 I enjoy it, however, I'm not sure how it feels as a grad student. As an undergrad, the honors college community is fantastic, and if you're a football fan, the entire school gets charged up in the fall for football season. (SEC, so...you know, big shock, right?) It does have its issues, like all schools. It's an urban campus so crime can be a bit of a problem. It's not the city you'd want to walk around alone in at night. Warm winters are great, summers are unbearably hot. The buildings run the gamut from beautiful and well-maintained (Business) to horrible death traps (Anthropology), so your facilities are going to depend on your program. I'd encourage checking it out before accepting.
spindiva502 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Same here. 3 classes, honors thesis, playing a sport, internship, volunteer research work, and 3 part-time jobs (fitness instructor--various teaching gigs around NYC)... and I'm legally-blind. I've had senioritis since freshman year, haha, but I'd really be able to focus much better if I heard SOMETHING back from anywhere. Some days I find myself motivated, but others (like tonight), I just come home, obsessively check application statuses, read forums, get discouraged, and cry. Clearly, a healthy cycle! None of my friends are applying to any grad programs, and I wish I had someone around going through this too so I can commiserate and share all these absurd and probably irrational emotions! Good luck with apps and the end of senior year!!
Soleil ت Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Yes, writing my thesis, taking classes, and applying for grad school isn't fun. On top of all that, my boyfriend of 2 years just broke up with me. Makes some of the decision-making process easier, but it still stings. Aww. I'm really sorry. Break ups are so painful, especially during a really stressful time in your life. Best wishes. ♥
Vincenzo Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 ..None of my friends are applying to any grad programs, and I wish I had someone around going through this too so I can commiserate and share all these absurd and probably irrational emotions!... You have us. Admittedly a bunch of [twitch] lunatics, but... RubyBright, epsilon and dat_nerd 3
quilledink Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Sort of glad to see I'm not alone? Misery and company and all of that -- I've also got my honours thesis (chapters of which I should be writing at this very moment), several reading-intensive history courses, reviewing/editing for three undergrad journals, and I also work part-time. But the waiting is just kiling me--it's terribly distracting from getting anything done. Ugh. And of course everyone always asks "heard back yet?" or (my "favourite") "how's your thesis going?" (it's going, alright!) and when I express stress they're baffled (you'll do fine, don't worry, I'm sure you'll get in). /endrant Sorry. No one else I know seems to be stressing nearly quite as much for some reason and I can't understand why... Edited February 6, 2013 by quilledink
Linelei Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Aww, hang in there, everyone! We took all this on because we are dedicated and love what we do. I believe in our individual abilities to make it through!
33andathirdRPM Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Senioritis is creeping up on me but I'm trying to keep it managed. Before, I would throw myself at homework and projects. Now they seem like an insurmountable mountain. Only a few more months to go...
513love Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I have 5 classes this semester and I'm working too. You'd think I wouldn't have time to think and obsess over hearing back from graduate schools, but I've managed to make that my top priority this semester lol. It's making time go by so slow.. ughh I guess I should get back to studying.

It's making time go by so slow.. ughh I guess I should get back to studying. I suppose that is a positive. If time is going by slowly, it means that there's more time to do the work that's piling up while stressing over grad school instead of actually doing work. And then when time goes by quickly (because we are all, presumably, doing work), it means one day less to worry about our results appearing in the mail....
