CUNY is my potential destination for Fall 2013.  I recently got admitted into the Biology PhD program at CUNY Graduate Center and am currently waiting on decisions from other programs.  What program/school are you going into?

Considering. Well they are considering, I should say. Got accepted for a PhD in Sociology and waiting to hear about funding. If funding works out, I would LOVE to attend.

I was accepted into the biology program and am super excited to start this fall. For housing, I'm not really sure yet. The GC housing is an option for now, but some people have suggested living in Queens because it could be more affordable and getting into Manhattan won't be too bad. They've said that right now is too early to really start looking for a place and to wait until a few weeks before moving to find a place.

I live in New York and will probably be attending CUNY if I receive funding. I just looked at the GC housing, and it's really quite expensive for the neighborhood. I've walked by the building and it looks nice enough, but you can definitely find better deals. For example: http://lexingtonheightsnyc.com/index.php The building is closer to the express subway stop at 125th than GC housing, but there's about 4 blocks away from each other. The two bedrooms are about $1600 for the whole apartment, compared to $1250 per bedroom in GC housing. It gets even cheaper if you live in a 3 or 4 bedroom. I live pretty nearby and I pay less for an entire floor of a brownstone with 12ft ceilings and a washer/dryer than for a much smaller 2 bedroom at GC housing. I love living in Harlem and I prefer it over Queens, just because it's much easier to get almost anywhere I want to go quickly.

On the other hand, the NYC market is insane and there's something to be said for being able to know in advance you will have a place to live that's full furnished. It is way, way too early to start looking and it's basically impossible to get an apartment (that you would actually want to live in) from a distance. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. Good luck, and maybe I'll see you around next year!

Thanks for the advice guys. I put my name on the waiting list for graduate housing but I guess judging from the prices I might be better off searching for a room in queens or Brooklyn. I'll put that off to a time closer to when I'd be coming to NY. For the meantime feel free to message me if anyone is searching for potential flatmates.

btw, what field are you in perpetuavix?

Good luck! I am in literature, but very interested in philosophy and its relation to literature so if you do end up over there I'm sure we'll run into each other!

Glad to be adding to this thread! I will be attending this Fall in the Audiology department.

For housing, I will be living with my parents in Queens (Rent free, but uughh I rather not). I am looking for an apartment in Brooklyn to move to instead. Hopefully theres funding so I could take that money and put towards that.

Hello everyone! I too am joining the Graduate Center this fall for a PhD in Theater. I have applied for graduate housing, but I am not too keen on them. But the hitch is that I am an international student and I can't come early to look for apartments myself. So I am still trying to figure out how to go about this. But if anyone here is looking for roommates or are going to be looking for apartments themselves, please give me a heads up? Thanks!

I'm looking for roommates too, but from what I understand it's not going to be likely to find a place now for august. probably wanna start searching again a bit closer to then.

Im in Chemistry, but I am not looking for the appt till I choose my advisor. I live faaaar from any school, but for now, I am content with that.

From what I hear, craigslist is not a bad way to go when it comes to choosing. Also, housing is gunna get more expensive, so be mindful of that.
