Too soon to lose hope? Berkeley, UT Austin, Michigan, UC San Diego

I know this kind of topic is ubiquitous, but I can't help it. And I think you'd understand...

I'm applying to PhD programs in CS, and waiting for the results from Berkeley, UT Austin, Michigan, and UC San Diego.

Anyone else still waiting for these?

Since Berkeley has grad student visit days in few days, I assume there's almost no hope for Berkeley.

But what about the others? Any thoughts?

Thx for the replies!

Since the discussions on the forum is mainly about MS lately, I was under an impression that it is customary to think we are rejected already at this time of the year.

Perhaps I was wrong?

I know it doesn't change my chances, but it feels so good to know someone else is also waiting for the same program.

Hi tkmkt,

I'm waiting for Berkeley's EECS PhD results too. I feel that our chances are almost non-existent now, but you never know! What is your area of interest?

Hi jdeep,

Yeah, we never know. That's certainly true. My interest is "smart grid." My major is CS, but I also read a lot of papers about power system. What about yours?

Human Computer Interaction with a focus on ICTs. My major is CS too.

I've lost hope a long time ago for Berkeley. I just wanna see the rejection letter at this point. Dunno what's taking them so long this year.

Here are the gradcafe results so far for PhD applicants. I would guess waitlists for Berkeley and Austin. San Diego and Amherst seem marginally better. Michigan probably has the most open slots left (?).

Berkeley:

12 interviews (17-Jan to 24-Jan)
17 accepts (23-Jan to 9-Feb)
1 reject (24-Jan)

Visit weekend (March 17-18, 2013)

Austin:

18 accepts (23-Jan to 24-Jan)
2 waitlists (31-Jan to 4-Mar)
1 reject (5-Mar)

Michigan:

5 interviews (24-Jan to 9-Feb)
5 accepts (29-Jan to 9-Feb; at least 2 with fellowship)

San Diego:

2 interviews (25-Jan to 27-Jan)
21 accepts (25-Jan to 13-Feb)
1 accept (22-Feb)
1 reject (13-Feb)

"Applicants are aacepted and rejected on a rolling basis until mid-April"

Amherst:

1 interview (29-Jan)
11 accepts (22-Jan to 8-Feb)
3 rejects (18-Feb to 19-Feb)

Michigan had a PhD visit day today. I'm going to guess that if you haven't been admitted yet to the PhD program, then your chances are not very high.

Oh really? I couldn't find it in the department calendar. Hmm.

Thx for the summary!

I see several MS rejection reports by UT Austin applicants in the gradcafe results today. Mine is still "under review."

Anyone received e-mail about waitlist from your program?

Are you sure your application was complete? (i.e. all letters submitted etc.) Last year my application to UT Austin was incomplete - because one of my letter writers forgot to submit a letter. They didn't contact me at all, and the status still shows as 'Under Review' - a year later. I didn't receive any acceptance or rejection email.

Thx for the information.

Apparently my letters are all submitted correctly. GRE, TOEFL scores as well.

Hope all my applications are complete..

Congrats to your Cornell and Brown offer, btw!

@tkmkt: This weekend was a PhD visit weekend. I go to Michigan as a CS undergrad and the professors and current grad students were walking around with a fairly large group of people and the school was serving some pretty good food for them on Friday. I know someone in my class who got into the PhD program at Michigan, so I did ask him to confirm.

Thank you for the clarification. It's very understandable that they have visit days at this time of the year.

Did you receive any notifications about waitlist? I'm starting to worry that my application was incomplete, as ssk2 suggested. (his/her case was at Austin, but still.)

I wouldn't know anything about that. I only applied for a Master's.

I'm in the same boat and quite fearful to be honest. I'm applying to MSCS and I've only heard back from UCI (late jan) and CMU (mid feb.). I'm waiting on UCSD, UCLA, and UC Berkeley, and Stanford all of which has had no updates on my application. I know stanford is delayed to late march, but the rest are making me worrisome.

hmm... we seem to have similar tastes in grad schools XD

I guess nothing can be confirmed until you heard back from them, though I would say the chance of getting admissions to any of these schools is slim at this point

However, one thing I can confirm is that official visit days for all these schools are over. Michigan and UCSD had theirs in the past few days, while UT's GradFest was way back in February.

@tkmkt: I have not heard of a waitlist for PhDs. All I know is they have given out most acceptances for PhDs. I don't think they've released Masters decisions yet; professors have been busy with PhDs up until now ... I do think they will release MS decisions very soon.

I was told last week that I'd hear the result of my UMich MEng application within one or two weeks - implying that I should hear by the end of next week at the latest.

I was accepted to UCSD's CS master's this morning, so there's still hope! Note however that one of my letter writers hadn't submitted his LOR, so they may have been waiting for it.

Thank you all for helpful information!

I got an email from Austin right now, indicating I'm rejected. :(

Still waiting for Berkeley, UCSD, and Michigan.

And now, I have sent an email to Berkeley asking about my status.

Hope they would give me a good news. (I know my chance is nearly zero.)

Any further information on Berkeley, UCSD and Michigan's PhD admissions would be highly appreciated.

My hopes for MSCS at CAL, UCSD, and UCLA are getting more and more bleak by the day. If I don't get into any of those, I would have to decide on going to UCI for my MS or reapplying next year. What would you guys do?
