IuliaMaior Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Just curious who has been accepted where, since most of the actual admissions processes are winding down, I believe. What are your final criteria going to be? Who are your front-runners?
Seneca Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I've been accepted to UW (PhD), waitlisted at Vanderbilt, and rejected from Berkeley, Harvard, and Fordham. Still waiting to hear back from Columbia, Rutgers, and Boston College (Latin MAT). I'll probably end up going with UW, but I'm a bit nervous since in my acceptance letter they said they had no funding to offer me at the time.
ciistai Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 (edited) All of my acceptances are listed in my signature so there's little use in typing them, but right now I'm holding onto small hope that I might still get into IPCAA off the shortlist. Otherwise it's between Oxford and Alberta for a Master's - this really depends on the funding situation... as far as Oxford goes I've been shortlisted for a full scholarship but if that doesn't work out and I don't get into IPCAA, I'm off to Edmonton. hanbran Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Congrats, everyone! It looks like I'll be heading to Brown. I'll probably end up going with UW, but I'm a bit nervous since in my acceptance letter they said they had no funding to offer me at the time. Did the department say that there's a possibility that funds will become available for your first year? Paying (even for one year) for a Classics PhD is a very risky investment. I'm finishing up an MA, and it would have been impossible to finish on time if I hadn't been funded. I can't imagine paying tuition and trying to find a way to support myself. I'm certainly not trying to rain on your parade, and I'm sure that you've thought long and hard about it, but, as a current graduate student, I feel a certain obligation to warn other prospective students of the trials and tribulations of the trade.
ciistai Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Congrats on your decision, hanbran! I know a couple of people who went to recruitment weekend at Brown, although I believe they are both archaeologists; perhaps you'll meet one or both of them in the fall!
hanbran Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Thanks! I met a few of the current Archaeology students and professors during recruitment weekend, but I do not believe that I met any prospectives. I very well may meet them, however!

They told me that they would let me know if any funding became available - their deadline is in a month, so I'm planning to email them sometime next week regarding the funding situation. Of course I'm still waiting to hear back from my other schools, and I'll have to carefully consider all of my offers - I'm really hoping that UW will offer me funding; I wasn't expecting admission to any PhD programs when I applied.
ciistai Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Well, I received news yesterday that I've been awarded a full scholarship (tuition, college fees, living expenses) for Oxford... so, it's not official yet because I haven't signed anything, but the decision is pretty much made - I'll be off to start my MPhil in Classical Archaeology there in the Fall. Congratulations! That's very exciting. If you don't mind my asking, which scholarship is it? I've been waiting to hear back from one in particular...

IuliaMaior Posted March 29, 2013 Author Posted March 29, 2013 Ciistai, check with the program if you are interested in doing your Ph.D. in the US after the MPhil. I have been hearing about a lot of people who defer their Ph.D. admission for the British MPhil!

I have been hearing about a lot of people who defer their Ph.D. admission for the British MPhil! Hi Iulia! I have heard they do this sometimes! Sadly I don't think I will be offered a place at IPCAA regardless - the three offers have been made and I don't believe any of the three (who all deserve it very much!) will turn it down. I will definitely reapply in the USA once I am ready to apply to doctoral programs again!
IuliaMaior Posted March 29, 2013 Author Posted March 29, 2013 I have several strong candidates remaining as well after making a pile of rejections last week. Turning down good offers from faculty whose work I greatly respect is a dirty, nasty feeling! The ones I have left represent very different aspects of the archaeology subdiscipline and have very different strengths. They're also (mostly) in opposite corners of the country...
Conscia Fati Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Congrats on your decision, bebulittle! Care to share how you made your decision?
