  1. It's naturally something that calls for such specialisation, such as it develops will be slow and most likely left to other faculties. Most receptionistas tend to be older scholars with a literary bent. That said look towards people like Lorna Hardwick (Oxford), Miriam Leonard (UCL) etc who seem to be pretty dedicated towards this and are probably the most famous.
  2. Am Oxford grad, anyway I can help? Also due to various specialist reasons Archaeology, whilst sharing a lot with the Classics dept proper, tends to be administered by Archaeology and Anthropology so that's the reason for the lapse. Offers from Classics might not be out yet since the last deadline (at least for UK funding) is the 18th of January.
  3. Welp, given that the offers are out and I haven't got one, looks like I'm not into Harvard. So I guess I can/should spend some time away from my computer.
  4. Just to add a slightly different voice to the topic of rejections and bitterness. Whilst I think the aggressive notifications of "Like I care!; There loss!" etc are silly, I DO find it helpful when people post their stats up just so you have a chance to gauge how similar you are. I'm also officially not going to check my e-mail for 48 hours now...
  5. Gratias ago amice....we will see I suppose, I just can't help shake the feeling. But I pray you're right.
  6. Sorry to hear about KCL, the UoL colleges between them have one of the best engineered masters programmes I've ever heard yet unfortunately they always struggle funding wise. Saying that, there are a number of scholarships so don't count yourself out yet, I know INTs hear back later on that front so don't worry. I've yet to hear back at all, pretty sure by now I've been rejected and just waiting for the letters to come.
  7. Pretty distraught any Classical suggestions for consolation?
  8. Yep same. Guess we wait for the physical letter.
  9. Depends on what you're after I guess, plus what you're calling Philology, there tends to be a difference between the UK, Greece, Europa Propria and the US from what I've seen, not to mention the new world in general. I mean Greece has a very wide remit for philology in that its language based criticism, the UK has a division between hard line philology (historical/comp) and proper work with Greek and Latin texts e.g epigraphy, textual etc rather than just literary. Very few people here seem to deem themselves philologists. Basically you'd expect them to have the typical skills, but also some auxiliary languages and dialects too. This is why I tend to prefer the term Classicists. I also dislike the typical Oxonian "Literae Humaniores" since its kinda chauvinistic.
  10. Solon's mad rhyme skillz, yo.
  11. Really? I think its great stuff.
  12. Because they're Welsh. Joking aside Caerdydd is a great place for all the archaeological stuff, they really go for that, but I'm always impressed by how much the Cymry can drink! We had some students from there visiting Oxon a while back for a conference and I went out with a few of them - woah....suddenly everyone was nattering in Welsh and downing these snakebite thingies.
  13. As in editions of the OCTs? nope sorry.
  14. Ah honestly if they're that far back they probably won't be the cheaper reprints we get nowadays, my modern Catullus is a bit...well its falling apart and I haven't touched it since first year. Ironically my best OCTs are from Greece, deliberately printed cheaply...yet they hold up brilliantly, they're paperbacks with weird card used for the covers, soft but also a bit springy.
  15. The OCTs aren't so much as constructed as bad reprints in most cases, for cost purposes. Still often the best solution though, alas, with some exceptions. I like the Green and Yellows but they're far too simple for anything more than first year under-graduate in most cases. Yet the more suitable options for later years tend to be ugly as hell. The Oxon ones, the Cantab autantiaci etc. I tell you which are pretty though, those old sixth form editions back in the 60s, the ones with the red binding, from MacMillan and stuff, they're so pretty and compact. I have a copy of Aristophanes Batrakhoi I've no use for other than the fact its pretty.
  16. I'm in the UK, so I don't even know....East Coast minus 5 or something I think we are. I'm going to go memorise the Theogony. I think thats the only solution to this madness.
  17. See, they're all tricking us. Bastardi!
  18. Hanbran, apt. Also, do you guys check application checkers or just wait for e-mails?
  19. Which, incidentally, is probably a more lucrative profession than our would be one.
  20. I've started just doing press ups/chin ups whenever I feel really stressed about it. The movement and counting is soothing.
  21. Reading Greek, someone was exclaimed in surprise that I could read Russian.
  22. Italic: Buck's book is a good start, we mainly had brand new handouts though to be fair and recourse to the typical comp phil handbooks is suggested for your sanity's sake. The trick is to take a deep breath, spend a few hours ganetting the information down and then keep reading/revising the specifics as you forget them. Its how I forced Old Persian down my throat too. Incidentally, also a great strategy for meeting one's prospective in-laws. I just call myself a Classicist in public, a Philologist amongst other Classicists and someone who needs to be sectioned around students from other disciplines.
  23. Hellenist, I can sympathise with your love of non Roman Italiotes though, one of the best courses I took was on the non Latin languages of early Italy, Oscan and Umbrian were fun to learn, it made Livy etc more interesting. A friend of my mine is writing their thesis on archaic funerary customs so I occasionally get referred to some interesting stuff.
  24. Articles? I mean studies in academic journals/books. You say you've read for Aristophanes, I'm guessing that's Andreas Willi's stuff? (easily one of the biggest philology lecturers I've ever seen, I love his bad jokes, most things will be similar to be honest. Ah its started? Good luck fellows. We can keep ourselves in good spirits, surely? What's everybody reading? watching? etc etc
