Basically, did you read any graduate admissions books prior to applying to grad school? Was/were there any particular one(s) that stood out?

Graduate Admissions Essays - Don Asher

 +1

Getting What You Came For is another one that I read and enjoyed.

Another +1 for getting what you came for, it's a bit old but it's a great read.

I've read all of these books and I came to recommend the first two (Asher's book on essays and Getting What You Came For).

Surviving Your Stupid, Stupid Decision to Go To Grad School was more funny than it was helpful, although it was worth the read.

Another +1 for Asher's Graduate Admission Essays book. Very helpful as an international applicant - albeit without any CS specific examples.

I also found Graduate School: Winning Strategies for Getting in with or Without Excellent Grades quite useful, if a little outdated.

For those applying to healthcare-based graduate programs, I found several medical school essay books to be helpful, especially Barron's Essays That Will Get You into Medical School.
