I'm a master's student, some of you may know me from my previous posts. I expected to graduate this month but my thesis is stuck now (Crap!). So I will be graduating in the Summer. We are allowed to attend our graduation ceremony which is in 2 weeks from now since we only have the thesis pending.

i'm not able to decide whether to attend or skip it? I'm more inclined to attending though and I know some classmates who are in the same position as me and they say they would like to attend as well.

Your thoughts?

No

I personally won't attend the ceremony unless I know my thesis is ready to be submit.

I know a couple of people who attended an early ceremony and ended up graduating a year later or did not graduate at all.

I have submitted mine, but haven't gotten the approval yet.

EDIT: Sorry, I should have mentioned -- I submitted mine 3 weeks ago and now need to do some revisions. I did the revisions too and re-submitted. hoping it is approved now ( We don't have oral defense in my dept.)

Yes, I re-submitted after revisions. Now waiting for approval, hopefully or another round of revisions (darn!).

What do you mean by did not graduate at all? I'm scared now

It depends. Would you be renting or buying regalia? Are there people that would come and see you walk? I didn't participate in my MA graduation, in part because I was about to start a PhD program so I knew there would be a big graduation for my family and friends to attend.

This is probably highly dependent on the person and circumstances of course! I submitted my MSc thesis in August, but the next round of graduation ceremonies was not until November, after I would have already moved far away from the school. So, I didn't even go back to cross the stage for my MSc. I don't feel too bad about this since I am planning on a PhD so that's when I'd get my family to come see it etc.

However, if I was in your position and I had the chance to cross the stage last June (before I submitted my thesis), I might have done so if both (1) I wasn't going to get another degree afterwards and (2) my family were going to travel all the way for it. For me, the only real reason to do the ceremony is for the memories of celebrating the accomplishment and that it's probably more important to my family than it is to me. So, I'd figure like 10 years down the road, I'm not going to care whether or not my ceremony was technically a few months early (or even a year early if I end up taking that much longer to finish).

Thank You All! I just opened this web page to update something and I see that I have indeed received responses!!!

The good news is -- my thesis got accepted! I'm ready to graduate. However, paperwork takes some time, so i'm hoping i can still get everything done by may 31. if not, the diploma date may read summer gradaution...

I'm definitely going for my graduation function!!!

Does anyone out there have advice on attending a graduation ceremony - for an online M.Ed.? I took a distance course and now it's time to decide. I would have to fly over for the day (2 hr flight). I was wondering if anyone thought it was worth it to attend, even though it would be the first time setting foot 'on campus'. Any insights?
