kimmibeans Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I understand. I am just saying that if you think it's all a gamble, you won't address whatever shortcomings there are in your application. See this link: http://pregrad.stanford.edu/phdfaq.html#important BTW, many schools only consider the GPA o fyour last two years. I agree. If you look at my first post, I made a point to mention this. Always question and try to improve in order to minimize risk.
MrsWizard Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Is there anyone who has still not heard anything from Stony Brook? Specifically the MCB program.
nns91 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Is there anyone who has still not heard anything from Stony Brook? Specifically the MCB program. I have not heard anything from them! I emailed them more than a week ago but have not heard anything yet
MrsWizard Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I have not heard anything from them! I emailed them more than a week ago but have not heard anything yet I called the office 2 weeks ago, and was told that they were still reviewing applications. I applied through CSH, and I just wanted to get confirmation that they had my app, but I haven't been given any info at all (so I still don't know if they really do have it, lol). So yesterday I emailed as well, and I am still waiting to hear. I don't want to be too much of a pain, but it would be nice to get some type of response.
Samartha Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Waitlisted by the molecular and human genetics phd program at BCM. Anyone who has got an offer from here and not planning to go please decline soon as it is my only offer and chance to get a phd:(
biochick Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Got UNC acceptance first thing this morning! Looks like I'm moving to Chapel Hill! Good luck everyone else waiting for them. Hey! I'm starting at UNC in the fall for EEOB mop 1
scottdickson86 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I JUST GOT AN INTERVIEW OFFER! Â Van Andel just called and invited me to an interview tomorrow! Â HURRAY! Â Great! All the best, man! Â
biohopeful91 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Is anyone else still on Vanderbilt's IGP waitlist? Or does anyone know when they will be giving us a final decision?  I interviewed this past weekend (their last interview weekend), and the director told us they will be finalizing all decisions this week and next week as the class becomes more determined. He said only 12 students so far have committed to the ~60-70 slots they intend to fill. hopefulengineer 1
RR1 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Hey guys,  For those of you who were present at an interview weekend at Baylor CM, do you mind giving me an overview of how you felt about the program/school and just general interview experience. Had a skype interview so missed out on that  Thank you!!
Orims Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Hey guys,  For those of you who were present at an interview weekend at Baylor CM, do you mind giving me an overview of how you felt about the program/school and just general interview experience. Had a skype interview so missed out on that  Thank you!! I interviewed with the IMBS program a few weeks ago, here's what I thought about it. The faculty and students were really nice and friendly, specially the faculty, it seemed like they really cared about their students. The school itself, or the medical campus, was also nice, a few new buildings here and there but mostly older building but great labs. My main reason for not accepting their offer is because Houston seems to be extremely big and I would need to buy a car at some point, I am more of a small town/biking/walking person. Great programs otherwise!Â

Great programs otherwise!  I'm in Houston right now... Depending on where you live, it is super easy to bike to the med center on Braes Bayou trail and you don't have to encounter really any traffic as you're not on the road. I'm a really small town girl. Houston is very big, but feels more small town depending on where you live. It is definitely way better than some of the other big cities I've been to (London, Paris, New York, Chicago). The bus system is very good. I have a car, but I ride the bus in. I'm also across the street from an HEB and down the street from a gym. If I really wanted to, I could get by without a car. You guys should take the time to talk to current students more about what it is like to live in the area before you make your decisions. Don't let the big city scare you away! It isn't my favorite place in the world, but I could have ended up in a city I would have hated much more!
No Coffee Plz Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Hey guys,  For those of you who were present at an interview weekend at Baylor CM, do you mind giving me an overview of how you felt about the program/school and just general interview experience. Had a skype interview so missed out on that  Thank you!! I interviewed at another BCM program, but I worked in BCM for a year and I am doing my undergrad in Houston so I can speak pretty well for Houston or BCM in general. To live in Houston, you most likely will need a car. Like all cities built after the automobile revolution (~1950s), Houston is spread out so it is difficult to have an efficient public transit system. That being said, the Medical Center is huge, is located in a very convenient location, with the TMC transit center and the Red Metro Line (light rail) running through it, and has many residential areas close by, so you probably won't need it for commute. Not to mention that the rent is much cheaper than other big cities in the U.S.  BCM's research is top-notch, and at the same time BCM is dedicated to its graduate school program. I have committed to another school because I have been literally living across the street from the Texas Med Center for the past 4 years and wish to have a different experience elsewhere (the only region I have lived in the U.S. is the South). But I really have nothing bad to say about Houston or BCM, and this is coming from an insider! Please PM me if you have more questions; hope I can answer them. biotechie and RR1 2
ERR_Alpha Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Just got my UNH rejection. Funny how you can get rejected from the lowest ranked school you apply to and get into better places.

Funny how I got accepted to the schools you are rejected from. ss2player, No Coffee Plz, Eatin' Biscuits and 9 others 12
ss2player Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Just got my UNH rejection. Funny how you can get rejected from the lowest ranked school you apply to and get into better places. Â Word. An even worse example: I never heard back from my current employer's PhD program (nearly 4 years working here AND in the MS program), and they are much lower ranked than the place I'm going. A part of me says maybe they knew I'd likely go somewhere else, but a bigger part says they're just incompetent. ERR_Alpha 1

My boyfriend pointed out that funding may be an issue at these smaller, lower ranked places too. Just goes to show no school is really a "safety school"!

Just goes to show no school is really a "safety school"! Â My lab is broke as hell, can confirm. It was just funny going on my other interviews and meeting people that had an interview here and I'm like "That's odd, I've heard nothing and all I have to do is walk across the street..."

This is what I was told too. I was wondering if anyone had their application put on hold instead of being waitlisted? Edited March 31, 2014 by djc7xf biohopeful91 1

tcmazer Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Just got a rejection from Van Andel. Â Jesus that smarts.
aaabbbccc88 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Just got a rejection from Van Andel.  Jesus that smarts. I am so sorry to hear that. I see you applied to UTHSCSA. I spoke with one of the Dean's concerning my rejection and he said  to book an appointment to speak to him on April 15th. He said he would be able to point out the weaknesses and problem areas of my application and would provide "constructive comments" on how to improve it. I know it doesn't lessen the pain now but I believe speaking to admissions and finding out what areas needs improvement will help you make the best decision on what to do now and the next application cycle. If you are interested in becoming a tech PM me and I could forward your CV to my PI since I am vacating my spot. Again really sorry to hear that.Â
ERR_Alpha Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Just got a rejection from Van Andel. Â Jesus that smarts. It's so strange because even though I don't know you guys in real life everyone feels like my friend! I'm really sorry to hear that
