colorless Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 I'm starting this thread -exclusively- for archeology students. Who is there? Where are you applying? What is your field?
mesoarch Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Maya archaeology here - applying to Tulane, UT Austin, SMU, UNC, Harvard and U of Arizona
novacancy Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 North Atlantic/Viking Age archaeology. Schools are as listed in my signature!
Anne00 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Southwest Exchange Systems UofA, ASU, and UNM What about you colorless?
NoSleepTilBreuckelen Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Molecular anthropology/archaeogenetics I'm looking for programs that have joint degrees or a collaboration with biology/ecology departments. Still narrowing down my list, but feeling pretty certain that I'll apply to Vanderbilt, UT Austin, Yale, MIT (CMRAE), NYU
colorless Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 Mesopotamia-Near East (old school here ) Boston, Brown, Upenn. Considering Uchicago as well.
Anne00 Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Nothing wrong with old school. I've always had an affinity for the Babylonian creation story where Tiamat's body is divided up to make heaven and earth. Very violent and gruesome but the image stays with you.
mesoarch Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 I was planning on applying to Boston as well but I started hearing a lot of stories about funding nightmares and people not being able to secure money they thought they'd get. Has anyone else heard anything, or know someone actually in the department?
Anne00 Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 If you go to the results page for past grad applicants on this site and sort by archaeology, you will see a lot of notes in general complaining about the lack of financing.
eriatarka Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Hey arch peeps!! I'm applying to study historical archaeology (in general) - colonial period Mexico. Got the schools down below... mesoarch: if you're applying to work with Bill Saturno, word is he's got a ton of funding bc of San Bartolo. As far as student funding, I don't know... I heard it's hard to come by there, but that's prob the case with most places right?

Yeah I'm sure Dr. Saturno's set, I had just heard some horror stories about students having their funding yanked after being in the program for a year or two. That started happening in the department where I got my Master's, and I'd rather avoid reliving that headache
eriatarka Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Yeah I'm sure Dr. Saturno's set, I had just heard some horror stories about students having their funding yanked after being in the program for a year or two. mesoarch Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Whoa, yeah, that is crazy. Do you think it has anything to do with performance? I think the department just lost far more funding than they anticipated, a lot of universities have been slimming down social sciences more dramatically than usual.
colorless Posted November 28, 2013 Author Posted November 28, 2013 I still haven't sent out anything for the Dec 15th deadlines. Time is running fast!

mesoarch Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Hello everyone! i wanted to ask you all, how long was your Sop or letter of intent, - pages single or double spaced? ....i am at about 1600 words and i dont know if it is too much Mine are ranging 1100-1200 words
Daisy123 Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 and are these SoP s single or double spaced...
mesoarch Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 and are these SoP s single or double spaced... 3 pages, 1.5 spacing
Daisy123 Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 so if the department does not mention anything should i assume that they are letting me make the decision?...godddd i am never going to finish this in time
colorless Posted December 2, 2013 Author Posted December 2, 2013 the ones I am applying say 1000 words maximum... i still haven't finished mine but the introduction seems rather long now...do i talk too much about myself or exaggerate this hook thing??... oh dear
Daisy123 Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I think i found some really good advice : the hook is important, but if you see yourslef spending time on your past experiences, and you ARE sumbiting a CV, mention it, reference your CV and move on
Daisy123 Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 no no, the hook is the hook. thats the first sentence or so and then move away before you turn it into a verbal diarrhea
jellyfish1 Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Hey all! I'm a historical archaeologist interested in brothel archaeology. I'm applying to Stanford, Berkeley, UChicago, Northwestern, and Boston U. (I've applied to all but Boston already). As far as SOP, several of my schools specified single spacing, so that's what I've been doing. Also I think 1-2 pages, single spaced is pretty standard, or at least that's mostly what I've been asked for. But I'd be shocked if a school didn't specify and then rejected you for doing the wrong type of spacing, so I wouldn't stress about it too much. Does anyone know around what time most schools start making decisions? Do they usually invite people for interviews or anything? I've talked to my undergrad profs a bunch about the actual SoP and application, but I feel like I have almost no clue what happens after that. Anyone have a better sense? Thanks!
anthropologygeek Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Archeology- go to the results page and look up each school to get a good idea when they notify people. Every school is different
