Archaeology applicants?

Nothing wrong with old school. I've always had an affinity for the Babylonian creation story where Tiamat's body is divided up to make heaven and earth. Very violent and gruesome but the image stays with you.

I was planning on applying to Boston as well but I started hearing a lot of stories about funding nightmares and people not being able to secure money they thought they'd get.  Has anyone else heard anything, or know someone actually in the department?

If you go to the results page for past grad applicants on this site and sort by archaeology, you will see a lot of notes in general complaining about the lack of financing.

Hey arch peeps!! I'm applying to study historical archaeology (in general) - colonial period Mexico.

Got the schools down below...

mesoarch: if you're applying to work with Bill Saturno, word is he's got a ton of funding bc of San Bartolo. As far as student funding, I don't know... I heard it's hard to come by there, but that's prob the case with most places right?

Yeah I'm sure Dr. Saturno's set, I had just heard some horror stories about students having their funding yanked after being in the program for a year or two.  That started happening in the department where I got my Master's, and I'd rather avoid reliving that headache

Whoa, yeah, that is crazy. Do you think it has anything to do with performance?

I think the department just lost far more funding than they anticipated, a lot of universities have been slimming down social sciences more dramatically than usual.

I think i found some really good advice : the hook is important, but if you see yourslef spending time on your past experiences, and you ARE sumbiting a CV, mention it, reference your CV and move on

Hey all!  I'm a historical archaeologist interested in brothel archaeology. I'm applying to Stanford, Berkeley, UChicago, Northwestern, and Boston U. (I've applied to all but Boston already).

As far as SOP, several of my schools specified single spacing, so that's what I've been doing. Also I think 1-2 pages, single spaced is pretty standard, or at least that's mostly what I've been asked for. But I'd be shocked if a school didn't specify and then rejected you for doing the wrong type of spacing, so I wouldn't stress about it too much.

Does anyone know around what time most schools start making decisions? Do they usually invite people for interviews or anything? I've talked to my undergrad profs a bunch about the actual SoP and application, but I feel like I have almost no clue what happens after that. Anyone have a better sense? Thanks!
