Boston programs

Recommended Posts

Hi SLP community,

I visited some of the Boston area programs over the summer/this fall (MGHIHP, Boston University, Emerson, Northeastern).

My impression was that Boston in general seems to have an incredible network of slp institutions, hospitals (Mass General, Brigham and Woman's hospital, etc), great placement programs, highly ranked programs (not sure how much this really matters aside from Ph.D./research desire), and of course, Boston is so lively.

I'm a bit nervous about applying since the programs are already so expensive, and then living in Boston is not cheap.

I was wondering if anybody else is thinking of not applying to schools here because of the high cost? If it weren't for the cost, I would have zero doubts about applying.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Erica

Hi there!

While I'm not doing SLP, I have lived in the Boston my entered life (aside from undergrad) and it really is a fantastic place to be! If you're really concerned about the high cost, there are plenty of neighboring towns (also with phenomenal universities) that are not as expensive as say BU or Northeastern. If you are still considering a Boston school, what you could do it what many people I know do/did - live in an apartment outside of Boston and get ride the train in. Also, people around here have large houses that they have broken down into separate apartments that they often rent out to students so that might be another housing option.

Another thing to look at if you haven't already would be to see if the programs are fully funded, a lot of Ph.D. programs in the area are if you get accepted (at least in Psychology and English they are). You can also contact the programs themselves to see what students typically do when it comes to costs.

Best of luck with whatever you decide! Steph

I am applying to MGH:IHP and the cost of attending plus living in Boston is definitely something that I have been thinking about.

I have family that lives on the North Shore of MA (about 30 minutes outside Boston) so I know, worst case scenario, I could live with them. I truly am in love with the program and all the opportunities Boston has so I think I would be willing to sacrifice some extra money.

That being said, my final decision will come down to a lot of factors, including cost.

I've also applied to MGHI solely based on how great of a program it seems even though i've never visited. But if I'm accepted I will have to really look in to the numbers. It would be great if they are well-funded and maybe have a lot of assistantship positions available to help offset the cost but something tells me that's probably not the case.
