Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Best of luck to you, clurp! Of those on your list, I have already been rejected from Duke, I expect rejection from UC-B, and I did not apply to UT Austin, CMU (for stats), or Columbia. I am hoping to hear good news from UCLA, UNC, Minnesota, and Rice, though given the competition this year, the first three are probably reach schools, haha.
Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Congrats Stanford admits! Treat yo'self tonight or this weekend. Hope Minnesota sends out their decisions tomorrow...
Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Looks like UNC-Chapel Hill will send out decisions at the end of the month? If you applied to UNC but you plan to go to another school you got admitted to, could you please withdraw your app from UNC asap so the rest of us have slightly, slightly better shots at getting admitted? thanks.
clurp Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Did you email them or did you look on the results page?
probstats Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 congrats stanford admits. Any chance any of you might accept elsewhere? I'm trying to decide if I should give up hope on my dream school.
Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) clurp, I was inferring from past results. I have no idea when they will send them out... but now that Washington, UMich, CMU, Harvard, Berkeley, etc. have sent out their acceptances, I am hoping that people who prefer these places to UNC can withdraw their apps to UNC. muzili Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 seems that the results of UNC come out pretty late... lose my hope on UMich... I guess they have already send out all the acceptances or interview
benni Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Just talked to a UMich professor. They're in the process of reviewing/gauging students interests.
Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Wow! I guess there might still be hope? I was certain that I was rejected too, haha. Looking at last year's results, UMich did send two rounds of acceptances. Guess I shouldn't give up hope yet until I see a rejection letter.
echlori Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Just talked to a UMich professor. They're in the process of reviewing/gauging students interests. Stats? (Or Biostats..?)
CauchyProcess Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) Got accepted today into UCSC's program. Don't know too much about their department (I applied to schools primarily based on geographic location) so going to talk to them & find out more. Stoked! Edited February 7, 2014 by CauchyProcess
Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Congrats CauchyProcess! I'm not optimistic about my chances at Michigan, but if I get in there, I'll definitely withdraw some of my other applications to make room for others. Hope others who have already gotten into their top choices (Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, CMU, Washington, etc.) do the same.
statisticsfall2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Rejected at Cornell. So, so far I'm rejected From Duke and Cornell, but accepted to Carnegie Mellon. Honestly, I've been pretty worry free after finally getting in to CMU though. I would be very happy attending there!
jewioru o Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Stats? (Or Biostats..?) I don't know about Stats, but I did get a call from Biostats this Monday and the professor said the same thing.
Statcheng Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I got an email from Cornell saying I'm waitlisted. It seems that they've sent out first round offer, and everyone on next round of offer if there's funding left is on the waitlist. I got an on-site interview from Duke early January, but if you are international, it's possible that they are still reviewing your materials and possibly offering you a Skype interview. There's hope! Hi alienne, have you been to the on-site interview already or it's gonna happen in the next few weeks? I have not heard anything from Duke yet and quite worried about this. Thanks!
effhorses Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Rejected from Duke; email to check application status on website.

Honestly, I've been pretty worry free after finally getting in to CMU though. I would be very happy attending there! That seems strange as CMU is ranked much higher than Cornell. I have an admit from Cornell, but CMU seems like the place to be if you like machine learning. Pittsburgh looks like one of the less nice places to live however, which is a shame, but on the other hand it is cheap.

agent229 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) Accepted and funded: Carnegie Mellon, UW-Madison (biostat option), and Colorado State Kind of accepted (funding not yet guaranteed, they say they are trying to get funding for me): Cornell Rejected: University of Washington No word yet from my other schools.. the only one left in my list where I really want to get in is Berkeley! Also... probstats, can you say more about Pittsburgh? I am obviously very excited about the offer from CMU but a little leery about the city. In particular, I am a very outdoorsy person and like smaller towns/cities... do you think I'd be miserable or find a way to get outside and away from the city occaisionally? cyprusprior Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Also... probstats, can you say more about Pittsburgh? I am obviously very excited about the offer from CMU but a little leery about the city. In particular, I am a very outdoorsy person and like smaller towns/cities... do you think I'd be miserable or find a way to get outside and away from the city occaisionally? I haven't lived in Pittsburgh personally, but I visited there spring of last year. I was very pleasantly surprised by the city. It is far from the industrial wasteland I expected. I really admire the pride the local people take in the improvements in their surroundings. I was able to rent a bike and explore along one of the three rivers (I think it was the Monongahela?). I also am a big outdoors enthusiast, and while it's not necessarily my ideal place to live, I think it compares favorably with most other similar-sized cities. Actually, while there may be more outdoorsy people in places like Madison Wisconsin, I think Pittsburgh has the advantage of being close to the awesome mountains and wilderness areas of West Virginia. Bottom line, I would not rule it out as "unlivable" until you can visit in person.
clurp Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I've enjoyed Pittsburgh when I've visited. It's hilly, has some cool old buildings, interesting neighborhoods, etc. The main complaints I can imagine people having are 1) The weather (not so great when compared to California or more southern places) 2) As a smaller city, it doesn't have the same level and variety of stuff that a city like NYC or SF or LA offer. But since you say you prefer smaller towns and cities, you wouldn't make complaint (2). I agree with cyprusprior ... Since Pittsburgh is so hilly, much of the land is unbuildable, so there are tons of trees and natural spaces. And it's practically (or maybe actually) in Appalachia, so there is plenty of hiking, etc. available right near (or in) the city.
