Got phone interview from Michigan biostatistics over a month ago  (applied for phd program), but hadn't heard back. So I emailed them to ask a few days ago and got their reply as follows:

Your application is still under consideration. Your application has NOT been rejected. We have made our first round of offers, but have not finished for the season.

So is it an informal waitlist? Still think my chance is low though :(

At least you still know you haven't been rejected. I'm pretty sure I've been rejected.

Well, there is still a chance if you haven't received the rejection letter yet. Good luck!

Anybody received offer letters from University of Connecticut? I heard that someone received an email informing him on the waiting list. Just curious about that.

Could I expect to see anybody here at the UCSB Statistics & Applied Probability open house in March? A generous financial offer in tandem with a good conversation with the dep't head is making these guys hard to turn down...

Thanks, but not receiving any emails and having the Wolverine website saying "A decision has been made" is pretty indicative.

This may hurt my reputation but after yet another self-entitled post by an international student (see Harvard rejection on results page. Off the top of my head I have also seen comments about one's international GPA being superior to U.S. undergrads because A- is an average grade in the U.S.--blanket statement and totally false!--and one not being excited about a Yale Ph.D. offer because they "expected" to get in.), I am just curious... do they/you (international students) really expect that they/you will just come in and steamroll the domestic applicants? I don't know if they/you think that we are just a bunch of obese idiots here in the states, but that kind of egotism is nauseating and ignorant.

I don't know about the people posting on GC, but in my experience international students are usually pretty humble about their abilities. Perhaps overly so given that the average international admit at most departments typically has a better academic record than the average domestic admit.

I can confirm that I as an international student, I had many sleepless nights wondering if I'd get in anywhere. So we're not all that arrogant!

On another subject: what do people think of this Data Science PhD in Edinburgh? I had an interview there yesterday and their department was one of the more stunning buildings I've ever seen!

I dont think nationality has got anything to do with those posts -_-

Wait listed at NC State..

Persistent Homology- Noooo!!!! I was hoping to see you at CMU! Even just based on your name, it sems like the Topological stats there would be a good fit lol: http://www.stat.cmu.edu/topstat/

I know! It was/is my dream school, but what can you do? University of Michigan have said that they will do the visa I want so that's my current likely destination. They are good at machine learning, but have no topological stats :(.

Perhaps we will meet at a conference instead!

By the way if anyone is waitlisted for CMU, I will likely be declining my offer soon as they can't offer me the kind of visa I need. Sucks!

Can you elaborate?

I am seriously thinking about going there. Didn't know about any visa issues.

I did not hear anything yet, but I have withdrawn my application to UConn, so hopefully this gives someone else a chance. Best of luck.

If you want the F1 visa you should be fine, I wanted a J1 visa which would enable my future wife to seek employment.

I kind of agree that when I see a comment that comes across as exceptionally entitled, I can guess it has an "I" next to it.  You also have to keep in mind that the competition for international slots at the top schools is so ridiculously tough that if they believe they have a shot then they probably have not encountered much failure in life.  Plenty of international applicants have done everything right and yet find themselves locked out when objectively less qualified domestic applicants get in.  That can't feel good.  The other reason might be that readers are more sensitive to connotations and word choice when something might be construed as boasting.  Here, the language barrier might be leading native speakers to misinterpret the tone and intent.  For example, I knew ahead of time from discussions with adcom members that I was probably going to get into Michigan's program, but I would never say I "expected" to get in because I know that it sounds annoying and arrogant when I simply want to convey that at some point I had prior knowledge that it was likely to occur.  Even now I feel uncomfortable having typed out those words because I understand the connotation.  Since 99% of the international students I know are exceptionally humble and gracious, I am inclined to think the occasional grating entitlement in the results survey is just a combination of poor word choice and frustration at a particularly dark moment.

Got accepted into Northwestern! so excited..

How will you choose between Northwestern and OSU? Anyone has advice?

I do not know much about Northwestern (the program is very small... some people like that though), but OSU is a great program. It does an excellent job placing its alumni. OSU has a lot of different research groups and a lot of faculty, so I'd think there are more research opportunities there than at Northwestern. If you're interested in an academic career after graduating, OSU would be a better choice, IMO.

Northwestern does not have any job placement info on its site for PhD alumni graduating after 2010, so you may want to find that out so you can see if Northwestern gives you as good job prospects as OSU.

I'll be there, although I haven't heard anything about financial support yet!

Awesome! Are you considering other options?

All remaining for me to hear from is UCLA and Columbia. Any prior probabilities I should be assigning to my chances there based on what people have seen? One thing I am thinking is that since I applied for the NSF GRFP fellowship, UCLA might hold out to see if I get it, in which case they wouldn't have to fund me. I'm assuming NC State is holding me on the wait list for the same reason, and UCSB hasn't guaranteed 4 years of support yet. Alas, CMU has already offered great support. I guess that's a key difference between public/private schools.

I don't think UCLA rejects anyone until April. After initial offers, they just pull people from the waitlist until they have filled all their spots. You could ask the Vice Chair of Graduate Studies at UCLA to see if you can gouge where your application stands.

I am still waiting for UCLA, Rice, UNC, and Berkeley. I believe UNC will send second round offers sometime in mid-March after they see who has declined the first round offers. Same with Rice. As for Berkeley, I believe that StatPhD2014, probstats, and I are all on a small waiting list (I confirmed via e-mail that my app has not been rejected yet and that there is a small list o f applications  that have not had a final decision made yet).  Anyone admitted to Berkeley going to decline their offers? ;)
