Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Is there anyone who knows the STAT-OR department of UNC-Chapel Hill in detail?? The department provides three programs that are STAT, OR(Operations Research), and INSOTRE(Interdisciplinary STAT and OR), and there is each admission director for each program. Here, what I want to know is whether the ultimate admission decisions of all three programs would be done simultaneously?? That is, all three programs send out admission results at the same time? Only one person has reported getting accepted from UNC-Chapel Hill on the results page. I applied there but haven't heard back. I e-mailed the statistics admissions director for a status but they didn't give me any response. I think (?) they may send more acceptances soon, but not totally sure.
clurp Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 (edited) I don't know about how admissions work in each of the different degree programs, but UNC stats is having a first round admitted student visit day next week. I assume that they'll admit some more students sometime after that, because they used the phrase "first round offers". Edited February 26, 2014 by clurp
Portmanteaujam Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 UCSB admissions should be rolling out!
effhorses Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I got a response from the Graduate Vice Chair of UCLA. He said the status of my application is "undecided." Well that's... uninformative. I sent him an email as well asking if a decision had been reached and, if not, when I could expect one, so I'll let everyone know if he provides any sort of timeline.
statisticsfall2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 UCSB admissions should be rolling out! How do you know
Portmanteaujam Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 How do you know I just got the email to check the website, where I found the formal letter. It could be that they roll out slowly, but at least they've started.
Portmanteaujam Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Allemanau- did you talk to the chair in Jan? Yes, I did. January 20-something.
wzsamd Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Anyone hear back from Rice? Is there a sceond round offer from them? I tries to email them and ask about my status. It seems there is a glitch in their server andmy email cannot be delivered.

I'd think that if they do send more offers, they will do so this week, since their spring break is next week and they definitely told me they had a visit day in March. Any more offers after this week will most likely be from a waitlist.
clurp Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Somebody put a Duke acceptance in the results section ... the stats suggest that it's a joke, though.
littlepiggy Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Got Purdue stat PhD offer yesterday. I am asked to make decision by Mar. 19, so pretty sure that there will be another round offers. No words on visit events though.

aridneptune Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I got an acceptance letter to Hopkins yesterday. It was an email from the administrative assistant with the graduate chair CC'd. Now my choice is Hopkins Biostat vs Cornell Stat vs Michigan Stat vs UNC Biostat. Any thoughts on the relative strengths / weaknesses and focus areas of these schools? What does everyone think?
Stat Assistant Professor Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 (edited) I got an acceptance letter to Hopkins yesterday. Are you leaning towards biostats or stats (theoretical or applied)? If biostats, then I would say JHU is the top school. If you're more interested in stats, I think Michigan is slightly better. Michigan has a lot of great interdisciplinary research, so it is strong in social science statistics research and statistical methods as applied to engineering/CS (there are a lot of faculty that hold joint appointments in the stats department and ECE or CS). If you think you might be interested in applications of statistics to those other areas, UMich is a good choice. Cornell seems to have some of that too, but I'm not sure if it is as reputable as UMich in these specific areas. Edited February 27, 2014 by Stat Applicant
biostatapplicant Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 University of Michigan's Wolverine webpage now says a decision has been on my biostatistics PhD application, but it does not show what the decision is. I haven't heard from the department yet.
effhorses Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Heard back from UCLA stat; they said I've been wait listed and that a decision might take 1-1.5 months. So it sounds like they've already made all of their initial offers. I'm probably going to withdraw my application since I'm unlikely to accept an offer anyway.

Hmm, the vice chair told me they were "undecided" about my application. Since they haven't rejected it, I'm assuming I'm also on this waitlist. Btw, to those who have not heard from Berkeley... my correspondence with the Graduate Student Services adviser implied that they are trying to finalize all decisions this week. Not sure if that includes Master's applicants, but I think the few PhD applications who haven't heard back should hear by the end of Feb.

I haven't heard from the department yet. I didn't check my friend webpage, but I did get their rejection letter last night. It was mailed on 2/24. You can email the coordinator to ask your status. I emailed her before I received the letter, and she just sent me the digital version via email. Good luck!

Since they haven't rejected it, I'm assuming I'm also on this waitlist. He told me specifically that I'm on their wait list. I'd assume you are as well, but can't say for sure. I wasn't going to wait until April anyway so I withdrew.

I wasn't going to wait until April anyway so I withdrew. Yeah, I am not going to wait until April either, unless I find out I am waitlisted at Berkeley (I wasn't rejected there yet either, according to the e-mail, so it's possible at this point). PS - it sounds like you've definitely settled on Harvard then. Congrats! That's excellent.

Thanks, I'm pretty excited after getting a chance to visit and chat with professors/students; definitely made my decision easier. Berkeley is a place worth waiting on; hope you get some good news!
probstats Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) This may hurt my reputation but after yet another self-entitled post by an international student (see Harvard rejection on results page. Off the top of my head I have also seen comments about one's international GPA being superior to U.S. undergrads because A- is an average grade in the U.S.--blanket statement and totally false!--and one not being excited about a Yale Ph.D. offer because they "expected" to get in.), I am just curious... do they/you (international students) really expect that they/you will just come in and steamroll the domestic applicants? I don't know if they/you think that we are just a bunch of obese idiots here in the states, but that kind of egotism is nauseating and ignorant. littlepiggy Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) Got phone interview from Michigan biostatistics over a month ago (applied for phd program), but hadn't heard back. So I emailed them to ask a few days ago and got their reply as follows: Your application is still under consideration. Your application has NOT been rejected. We have made our first round of offers, but have not finished for the season. So is it an informal waitlist? Still think my chance is low though Edited February 28, 2014 by littlepiggy
Igotnothin Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Are you talking about the "suck it BITCH" post? I think that was a joke and it's sort of funny. Also how do you know that was an international student? As far as I can tell there are jerks and fat people everywhere, and obnoxious applicants come in many different forms. Biostat_HU 1
