Hi everyone! I am currently a senior at UIUC in Speech and Hearing Sciences. My GPA in pre-requisite courses is 3.15 (no Cs, but 3 B-), my major GPA is a 3.33, and my cumulative GPA is a 3.56. I have not taken the GRE yet, but scored a 146 Q and 152 V on a practice test, without studying.

My experiences in the field include receiving therapy from birth to eighth grade and teaching a preschool course in high school. In college I was my sorority's philanthropy chair for a semester, held multiple positions within my service fraternity, and am on a committee for NSSLHA. I will have worked in our cafeteria for three years and volunteer at different schools throughout the community/will have worked as a classroom aide in one of our developmental labs. I also will have worked in one of the labs focusing on language and shadowed different speech pathologists in the schools, hospitals, and clinics.

From this, does it seem that I have a chance at graduate admissions when it comes time to apply? How can I work to strengthen my application? I do not plan on applying to top programs, but would love to be able to attend an out of state program- does anyone have any suggestions for programs? Thank you in advance!!

You experience is great. You are majoring in Speech and Hearing Sciences correct? Every school has a different set of prerequisite courses they want completed. Some ask for only five courses while others may ask for eight or nine. You major GPA is ok, but I was told competitive for this major is 3.5 and above. However, you could compensate that with great GRE scores. You did good for someone who did not study. I studied and still got lower than your quantitative score (145)!

I would suggest going on www.asha.org and look at their edfind section. This gives you an idea of what GPA's and GRE scores accepted applicants had for admission into programs throughout the United States. It is broken down by state.

I would say you have a chance!  I have pretty much the same MAJOR GPA and prerequisite GPA as you do(3.28) but I have an overall GPA of 2.77 because of no interest in school my first 2 years.  I am applying to 13 schools all of which who have told me they accept people with my background/GPA/GRE.  MY GRE is V-152, Q-150 and AW 3.5.    I did take a year off this past year after graduating and have worked in neuroscience and as an SLP for charter schools which should help.  But if I get into one of the 13 programs I will let you know!  I will also let you know which programs I got wait listed to also.  GOOD LUCK!   there is always hope if you are putting your ALL into the Major/Field.

twinguy,

I was wondering if you knew on the Valdosta State University point scale for admissions, is the GPA considered your major or cumulative GPA?

Thanks for both of your input. I have found it very helpful.
