Nrrrdgrrrl Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 With the announcements impending for the November 2013 deadline, I figured we need a space to keep each other company...what are your projects?
elunia Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I'm a bioarchaeology grad student with a project in China. How about yourself? Does anyone know when the first-round decisions went out last year?
Xavi6 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 According to last year's forum it was February 7th (Thursday), so my guess is any day now..
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 I'm hoping to go to Britain to study alternative religious communities as a response to secularism.
Xavi6 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Looks like the SSRC dream is over, anyone heard anything yet on the Wenner Gren?
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 nope. last year, I heard on the 7th...so maybe today is the day? Do they only notify people who are declined in the first round?
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 also, can I just say, if I get more than one rejection this month, I might have a nervous breakdown! I'm also studying for my exams, which start March 10th.
moraurora Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 hello! yet another applicant here as well. how did you hear about ssrc? through email or mail?
padthai234 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 transcript requests come by email, rejection letters by snail mail (for SSRC).
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 I'm still holding out for SSRC...but you should check into the forum on that...
far_to_go Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I got the SSRC rejection in the mail a couple days ago. Still waiting to hear on the Wenner-Gren. Last year I applied for the May 1 deadline and was notified by e-mail that I had advanced to round 2 on August 1. I found out around Oct 10 that my application was rejected, but the feedback was really helpful so I revised and resubmitted for the November 1 deadline. Hoping for a better result this time around. Good luck to everyone!
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 It seems a bit delayed; I'm hoping that means we were all moved to the next round...
moraurora Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) According to sent notifications on February 15th two years ago. I guess notifications will be send out sometime this week and hopefully we will receive positive ones or not receive anything at all which will be a good sign... Edited February 10, 2014 by moraurora
Xavi6 Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Agreed, hopefully this week is the week...for us to find out if we get to endure another waiting session in April....
elunia Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 On the one hand, of course want to advance to round 2, on the other hand, if I don't advance I won't have to wait until April for a deifnite answer!! I'll just do my best not to think about it until we hear. Incidentally, anyone have any experience with the Lewis and Clark?
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted February 12, 2014 Author Posted February 12, 2014 I considered that one, but was advised against it, I think more for direct applicability to my project more than anything else...
Cicero Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 On the one hand, of course want to advance to round 2, on the other hand, if I don't advance I won't have to wait until April for a deifnite answer!! I'll just do my best not to think about it until we hear. Incidentally, anyone have any experience with the Lewis and Clark? I applied for the Lewis and Clark. Total shot in the dark, but the app didn't require much more effort given everything I've had to do for all my other applications. Do you know anything about when we hear from them?
Xavi6 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 L&C notifications went out via email at the end of May last year. Applicants got a yes, no, or waiting list. I got put on the waiting list, and then heard that I received the award at the end of July. Cicero 1

elunia Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I applied as well, since as you said Cicero it wasn't much extra work. Yeah bummer that it's such a long time till we hear. I will be on my way to the field already at that point!
padthai234 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 sooo. any news on the actual wenner gren? whispers? tidbits? leaks?
Nrrrdgrrrl Posted February 13, 2014 Author Posted February 13, 2014 only crickets and heartbreak, I'm afraid...
elunia Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Tomorrow it was. Just got the rejection email - didn't make the first round cut. The main point of the reviewer comments was that I wasn't detailed enough in my methods and study population, which makes sense. But it also says I used only half the space in the application, which I did not realize I had done. In fact I thought my essays filled the entire space on the application form? Congrats to anyone who did make the cut! gradschool2013 1
