pears Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 catsrgods: what are your research interests, & what kind of work are you hoping to get into? I spent some time between undergrad & starting my MA working in California; if you're willing to look outside of LA, I may have some recommendations of places to work. Feel free to shoot me a PM, too!

I spent some time between undergrad & starting my MA working in California; if you're willing to look outside of LA, I may have some recommendations of places to work. Feel free to shoot me a PM, too! Do you really have any suggestions on what i can do also??? i am in the same possition picking my nose wondering WHERE to apply while i am waiting for the next cycle. I honestly don't know if I will reapply next year. Unless I am able to really add to my resume and application then I don't think I will. No sense in sending the same stuff in that got me on the wait list, I need to be able to show something that will get me chosen right away! I am not entirely sure how to do that at this point. It's possible that I will take a language course over the summer or work to submit something to a conference. In that case I would reapply. I might also retake the GRE and I will be finished with my master's degree at that point. So, maybe? Or I might say "f it"and just go travel for a couple months! That sounds like a good plan! i am thining of doing the same thing. I have a q for you though, how can you submit something in a conference - through your MA program ? or just randomly
skylarking Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Daisy: calls for papers usually go out about three to four months before a conference (except national conferences, those are way in advance). If you're interested, ask your advisor(s) about where you might submit. All the ones I know require you to be in a grad program and I don't know if you're in undergrad or grad. I presented at the national conference on undergrad research my last semester of undergrad to beef up my application (also it was being held 4 hours from me, which was a bonus). There's also always the possibility of national conferences. A couple buddies in undergrad presented at AAA one year.

That said, I only had one person who helped me through the application politics, but nobody to help me with career/work advice, so I'm happy to share what knowledge I have.

Melian4 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 hello all...a few of us on the wait list were supposed to be cut this week...has anyone talked to anyone in the program or has heard anything??? I need to disconnect my internet because i have been sitting in front of this computer while my daughter is begging and crying for me to take her outside. Grad apps= me bad mother Haven't heard a peep from them this week! Did they tell you they'd notify people if they made the cut or were rejected?
Daisy123 Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 no they did not tell me that but i am just supposing that if we are to be rejected , we will be notified...its not like they are cutting 2000 people...just a hand full..Plus, on that email wait list notification we received it said that they will notify people if they were unable to make an offer.....now WHEN that will happen i dont know... i guess i am just assuming for our sake and sanity it will be right away
Daisy123 Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 will you be attending if you get in? i see that you got into a wonderful program at oxford too!
Melian4 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I don't know yet! Oxford was my safety school in a sense. I knew I'd get in, but not if I'd get funding. They announce scholarships a lot later than they make offers, so I won't know for a while! I hope the Cotsen will contact us before April...
Daisy123 Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 OH wow oxford is your safety schooL???? how does that work? are you an american applicant or an international student (in terms of the Cotsen program). In any case, when i last spoke he did say April is when he will let us know buti hope he is wrong...ugh... is stanford or cotsen your top choice?
Melian4 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I studied there before, and my recommendation letters were from profs on the adcom. I am international!
aarch Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 hello all...a few of us on the wait list were supposed to be cut this week...has anyone talked to anyone in the program or has heard anything??? I need to disconnect my internet because i have been sitting in front of this computer while my daughter is begging and crying for me to take her outside. Grad apps= me bad mother Funding offers have gone out, so right now they have to wait on responses from the admitted students before deciding how many (if any) get taken off the waitlist. Melian4 1
Daisy123 Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 oh this is sooo depressing. Did you contact them? Funding offers have gone out, so right now they have to wait on responses from the admitted students before deciding how many (if any) get taken off the waitlist.
Melian4 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Funding offers have gone out, so right now they have to wait on responses from the admitted students before deciding how many (if any) get taken off the waitlist. Thanks for the info aarch!
catsrgods Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Any one from the wait list here anything at all? Is "no news, good news"? I'm currently trying to make plans for the fall and my Plan B (and Plan C) can't fall into place until I know! Getting rather anxious to hear SOMETHING (…anything, someone, please!)
Daisy123 Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 Hi.! i have no news either! I am not sure if that means it is good or bad...but i am hoping that it is just a super cool coincidence that ALL OF US ON HERE have not been notified with bad news
catsrgods Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Man, I guess it's just a continued test of patience! I imagine that they are waiting for everyone to get back with them and we should know by the end of the month. I added UCLA to my FAFSA that I turned in this past weekend, just in case. Better to be prepared than not, right? Keep me posted, everyone, if you hear anything and PM me if you won't want to post it publicly.
Daisy123 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 Hello everyone! how are you holding up? I just wanted to check in and see if you have any news or have contacted the department? I did call and ask if i am still on the wait-list and i have survived the second "cuts" but .....we will stilll have to wait. I was wondering for those on there that ARE on the wait-list- if you do attend another institution - do you take yourself OFF the waitlist...how does that work?
screencheck Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I'm still waiting, I haven't bothered to contact the department, but I am starting to think it might be a good idea.
Daisy123 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 another thing that has been eating at me is- if the people who are accepted have already accepted their offers and there are no spaces on the waitlist, then should we not hear about it immediately??? Is this a fool's hope or what?
Daisy123 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 haha well i am just hoping the sense will turn into positive news for us is UCLA your top choice?
screencheck Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I would love to go there. I'm already in the city so it would be really convenient and its a fantastic program (that I didn't expect to even make the wait list for). But, currently my top choice is any school that accepts me.
Daisy123 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 good plan you still have a few schools to hear from so that really good! UCLA is the last for me, i have been rejected from everywhere else. Will you be reapplying next year if things dont work out for you this year?
screencheck Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I think so. I have plans to do some field work in peru this summer and I have 2 papers with my name on them that will hopefully be accepted soon. so I think I will be a more attractive candidate next time around. but I would like to not have to do that.
