cfortner2 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Hey friends! I'm loving this blog - it gives me one more thing to compulsively check everyday!! I'm a finalist for ETA in Thailand, and I haven't seen many others on here. Any other Thailand or Southeast Asia out there? Good luck to everyone!! I feel your pain.
ltsax Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Does anyone know if all countries interview their recommended candidates? I have not heard a peep from Spain.... I know that at least for Japan, there wasn't an interview. I have also heard that not all countries that have interviews require all applicants to do one.
mmalloy6 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 wait that seems like my life. i actually spent a year in Hannover, which kicked off my German obsession, and then i went back to live with my host family for a summer, and then spent 6 months in vienna. i have started a german conversation club, speak german with my friends from Germany allllllll the time, and speak ot a lot of my American friends only in German. you are definitely right -- i was so proud when people mistook me for German for the first time. Now all of my German friends make fun of me though, because my "machen"s have turned into "mochen" thanks to the Austrian accent. And I am actually still waiting on Austria (and Germany!) so I am in pretty much the same boat that you are! I applied Germany ETA, did you as well? Or are you doing research? Interesting that we have the possibility of being in the same cohort group... Haha I completely understand the obsession--so many people at my school think that I am German because I speak it so often and do all things German. As a small example, even my cufflinks have German flags on them. It has been my dream since freshman year to receive the ETA grant in Germany, so that's the only one for which I applied. In hindsight, I should have applied for the Austrian grants, but my heart is really set on das Vaterland. I love imitating all of the different German accents (even "schwizerdütch"), so the whole "machen" und "mochen" thing really resonates with me. I love the way that the Austrians say "Sage mal!"

Mein Name bei facebook is Kaight Conheady. Mal sehen... miracle18 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum. I know it's a little late in the competition but I literally just found out about this forum and got excited that there are people who are in my current situation. I'm currently a Fulbright UK study/research Finalist. Last week, the university I applied to contacted me and said I needed to apply to a program at their university because there was a deadline for confirming to the Fulbright committee that they (the university) are happy with their (Fulbright's) selection. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a good or possibly a bad sign?
chethedoctor Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Miracle18, Fellow UK finalist here. Well that could only be good sign. Otherwise why would the university contact you if they haven't heard from the fulbright commission? I haven't applied to my school yet because I wanna hear from the commission first. There's a chance we might hear next week. Welcome to the forum and good luck to you!

The reason why I did not apply to the university was for that same reason: that is, I wanted to wait until after I heard from the commission. However, I think some universities require acceptance into a program before you can be awarded. Anyways, I hope we hear next week. This wait is killing me. And good luck to you too. waiting279 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Does fulbright email on Sautriday's? I am needing to know if I should be freaking out or putting it on hold untnil Monday. Last year I don't think there were any Saturday/Sunday announcements, according to the spreadsheet, so go ahead and try to take weekends off from anxiety since it really won't help anything along! ;-) (I know, I know, like that's possible...) rockermaster 1
Dbloom Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I'm a UK applicant too and I'm waiting to apply as well. Which partnership did you apply for?
miracle18 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I'm a UK applicant too and I'm waiting to apply as well. Which partnership did you apply for? University of Kent.... What about you?
cloudysky16 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Miracle18 - that sounds like a good sign for you, which is wonderful! But I wonder if all the universities need to go through the same application/approval process if you haven't already applied. Has anyone else gotten a similar email? My partnership scholarship university required me to apply in December for Fulbright eligibility, so I'm not expecting one. But if all the universities need to approve the Fulbright applicants separately, UK notifications could take a while ....
miracle18 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I was wondering the same thing. But the university I applied for said Fulbright gave them a deadline for confirming to the committee that they (the university) are happy with the committee's selection. So I assume all universities would have that same deadline or near it. I don't think this would make the process go any longer. The university told me that the deadline was tomorrow (i.e., March 11). So I had to apply to the university the same day I received the email. The following day (i.e., March 11) I got an email accepting me into the program and university. I hope this was clear.
chethedoctor Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Acceptance within 24 hours is quite remarkable. I agree with cloudsky16. I think this is really good. I didn't get such email but I am really excited there's some movement. Let's hope next week is the week. lilymasala 1
cloudysky16 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Thanks so much for clarifying, Miracle18!! That makes me feel a lot better. Crossing my fingers for all of us.
tspier2 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Question about Fulbright, hope you guys can answer it: If you're already enrolled in a doctoral program at a US university, can you apply for this? I can't seem to find any exact wording on their site/the internet that implies otherwise. Would really like to know, thanks! As long as you haven't already earned the doctorate, you are still allowed to apply for the ETA. Once you have earned it, you are no longer eligible. The Ph.D. does have to be listed on the application, however. Assuming you aren't applying for an ETA, disregard everything I said. Otherwise, I can share with you the email I got about how to list the current course of studies.
Horb Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I'm debating applying for the UK next year or the ETA to Germany. I'll have completed an MA in English, and will be continuing on to a PhD (which would be delayed if I got the grant). Does anyone know about the difficulty of getting the ETA if you have more advanced work than a BA? Are you less likely to get it?
MudcatJR Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Hello Everyone, Excited Indonesia ETA acceptee here. I found this thread while trying to sleuth more details about the upcoming assignments - I have a summer job lined up that I am excited about and would love to hear that the program begins in early August. Also, I'm pretty anxious to find out where I will be assigned. For other Indonesia ETAs, have y'all received your official letters and, if so, do are they any more detailed about the assignments? Thanks, and best of luck to everyone!

I'll have completed an MA in English, and will be continuing on to a PhD (which would be delayed if I got the grant). Does anyone know about the difficulty of getting the ETA if you have more advanced work than a BA? Are you less likely to get it? I think it depends on what each country is looking for. Germany's country page says that you qualify with either a bachelors or a masters, but that "strong preference is given to students younger than 29." Difficult to tell whether that means the younger the candidate the better, or that 29 is a cut-off point. You might try looking at the spreadsheets on this thread (I just found them myself and they would have been really useful last year). If every acceptee only has a BA you might take that as a sign that it will be more difficult to receive a grant. Good luck!
