erica_speaking Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Hi! I have to take either chemistry or biology this summer (the geology class I took as an undergrad doesn't count as my science prerequisite). So anyway, I was thinking about taking it via Utah State Online, however, it is 14 weeks long. Does anybody know if there are other online alternatives that take fewer weeks? I was hoping to have a few extra weeks off before starting grad school Thanks, Erica
danielle90 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Hi! I'd highly recommend either your local community college or university Extension! Although I took my science pre-reqs in person via UCLA extension, I know they offer certain online classes with no lab component. UCLA Extension typically goes for 10 weeks during a regular session and 6 weeks for Summer, but I'd check the course dates and listings first! Let me know if you have any other q's!
danielle90 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Doesn't have to be UCLA extension, but something like it may work for you! You'll have to wait either til Spring Quarter listings or Summer Quarter listings to be updated, though.
shuca Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Try searching for "self-paced" online courses! As the term "self-paced" suggests, these courses don't follow the semester schedule that the schools have, so you can start it as soon as you register for it, and you can make it as short (or long) as you want to make it. Sometimes the school might have the "minimum required length" set for the course but it's usually around 6 weeks.
goingtobeslp13 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I'm taking Human Biology this semester online through SUNY Empire College. It's not very challenging. I'd look into that - they have a huge online program!
wait_a_moment Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I did my science courses at a local community college, and I'm currently doing my Stats course that way. I'm really happy that I've done that way. danielle90 1
erica_speaking Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Thank you so much for the replies. Unfortunately I live overseas, so my only options are online. No such thing as a local community college here Good luck everyone! I hope these coming weeks all bring the news you're hoping for (if it hasn't already )

You may still be able to find an online class via one of those comm. colleges. If not, then definitely try a "self-paced" class
erica_speaking Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Yes, I am a U.S. citizen. Just living abroad I'll definitely look into one of those self-paced classes. I've also peaked at the SUNY list offerings, which seem pretty good.
Physsci Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Hi All, I took an online "Consumer Chemistry" course completely online from Bemidji State University. June 3-Aug 2. A bit expensive, but very suitable for someone without Chemistry background. I worked completely independently, so I didn't have to coordinate any group work or live meetings with my busy work schedule. The course met my physical science requirement. Good luck.
mo~ Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Does anyone know if there's a certain grade you have to have in these courses? I got a C in my biology class way back when.
hopefulspeechie16 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I'm wondering the same thing. I got a B- is my stats and Bio class and wondering whether it would be acceptable?
dial1010usa Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 You have passed the class then it should be ok, right?
Missthang Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I received a C in my general biology class and it counts. I also had a geology class from when I attended community college that counted as well. I think as long as you pass then it should be ok (just make sure that class counts towards the ASHA degree requirements first obviously). Not sure if this just a rule in our program at my school or if others do this as well but we must get a B- or better in all CSD classes but just passing for any others classes like math, science, electives...
GandalfTheGrey Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 My school, as well as most schools I applied to, required a B- or better in science/math/stat prereqs.
