Immunology PhD!! Just went back and visited again this weekend and fell in love with it all over again. Can't wait!

Where is everybody moving from? I'm from California.

^ Haha you found the thread. I'm from Denver, CO. Originally from Southern California. What made you visit a second time so soon? I think I'll visit in June to find apartments.

Just wanted to make sure 100% that it's where I wanted to go. Also dragged my boyfriend along with me to see if he liked Durham as a place to live :)

I am planning to go there too. Never been to Durham and I have heard mixed reviews.

I'm from Bangalore, India. I love the folks at Duke, but I'll admit I am excited and a little intimidated at the thought of moving to a new continent and staying there for the next six years or so.

Would any of you be interested in a private Facebook group so we can get to know each other better?

I'll be dukebound this Fall in pharmacology. I love the NC area and everything Duke has to offer. Sort of been searching reputability of neighborhoods and what not, especially since durham can have some really rough areas. I found a potential place via duke list, but I'm still keeping my mind open.

If anyone's looking for a roommate for a 2BR/2BA then feel free to pm me and we can see if we'd be compatible. I'll be starting my phd in Fuqua and don't know a single person in the area yet!

So far, I know that east durham is not the safest place to live. What about south durham? Or those complexes between Durham and Chapel Hill? Or the research triangle area?

Yeah. I've heard the same.

I am not going to Duke, but I just wanted to chime in because I grew up in Durham and am currently living here again (until I leave for my program in the fall). I know Durham can have a shady reputation, so I just wanted to let everyone know that Durham is AWESOME. Tons of amazing restaurants, breweries, parks/trails, museums, shopping, etc. It has received a great revitalization in recent years and has turned into somewhat of a hipsterish type of town (but not in a bad way). Chapel Hill and Raleigh are also a 20 minute drive away and each very cool and different in their own ways. Yes, Durham has some sketchy parts (don't all cities?), so do your research before moving. But it is not something I would be worried about, and not something I have ever had to worry about.

Just to bounce persimmony's question, which parts of Durham are sketchy or safe in your opinion? What do you think of the place north of Central Campus?

Some people have also told me that the Belmont Apartments area isn't particularly safe and keeps getting broken into.

I'll be starting the Romance Studies PhD program this fall! I actually went to Duke for my undergrad and think Durham is an amazing place. There's a great farmer's market, local food culture, some awesome breweries, a minor league baseball team, and even cool art.

I have a hard time generalizing about "safe" and "unsafe" areas in Durham because they're often not very far apart.  I lived at the Belmont for a year and a half as an undergrad and never had any problems personally, although there was a string of burglaries toward the end of my senior year (2011).

I'm also on the look out for a roommate to split a 2BR/2BA

I'd be joining Duke for a PhD in Physics this fall. I am pretty optimistic about it, although I do keep hearing about Durham not being the safest of places. Never been there.

Thanks to everyone for the information posted here. I am looking for a roommate too.

I'm going for the Immunology PhD also! I'm pretty sure we were at the same recruitment weekend. I've been scouring the web to try to find anyone else who may have accepted the invite. Glad I finally found one! Woo Hoo!

From Ohio.

Thanks for the housing information, all.

I'm a current grad student (humanities) at Duke and have lived in Durham for 2 years. If anyone has any questions about the area and/or places to eat/drink shoot me a PM.

Found a place to live! After much research, I decided on the area by Southpoint mall with close access to the american tobacco trail, which my bf and I are very excited about. I've come to terms with the fact that crime exists throughout Durham and that I'm 108% more likely to get robbed/murdered in Durham than I am in Denver...but apparently I'm 100% less likely to get raped so I'm cool with that  I need to stop looking at crime stats.
