kalyanji Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Civil Engg - I applied to 8 universities and 4 rejected me ..........with a GRE score of 325, TOEFL 113 , GPA 3/4 is there any chance i will make it to fall 14 in Purdue / NCSU / Maryland or TAMU? freaking out
kalyanji Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Hi guys: someone please share their thoughts on possible chances for this profile ...thanks
ahlatsiawa Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Most admission committees conduct a holistic evaluation of your application and do not focus merely on the GPA. In addition to GRE scores, a killer SoP and strong LoRs go a long way. I know people who were accepted at NCSU with acads below 60%. Keep your hopes up! I got into Syracuse with a 2.7 GPA and mediocre GRE scores. Granted it's not in the same league as the four universities you have mentioned but you still have a fair shot. karan_bhach 1

It depends on if the op is talking about master or PhDs though. I still think he has a good chance nevertheless.
kalyanji Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 Thanks for the responses folks. Applying to MS. My SOP did seem good when I reviewed it and my recos are from 2 professors and one HOD. I'm beginning to feel may be i was a bit ambitious when i chose the schools ....fingers crossed about NCSU , Maryland and Purdue now........agonizing ..
victorydance Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 There is no way anyone here can answer this. leSpyFox and ahlatsiawa 1 1
roadfish Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I had the impression that for foreign students GRE and toefl scores are more like a protocol evaluation while ur entire profile and "FITability" counts more.
kalyanji Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 Well, April 15th is almost here upon me - and the proverbial Damocle's sword may fall and declare no admits ............i do agree that this is a wholesome process and the entire profile gets an evaluation. Its just that the choices seemed possible at that time - if not all, atleast a fair percentage of them. Havent lost hope still and just going thro the turmoil and thinking about plan B. Thanks for all your comments , these conversations were a definite consoation.
Vene Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 If you're applying to a MS program April 15th isn't a deadline for anything. April 15 just applies to funded PhD programs.
kalyanji Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 Wow ! that's such a load off my mind to know about April 15th....thanks for that information! A definite breather in this situation. However, is it true that i'd have been informed by now if a university is admitting me? Is it too late in the process to be hopeful? Thanks again!
Arcalder Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 having good GPA and GRE score are not so so important the comitee needs to look your entire profile and analyze if you have the potential to be a good MA or PhD student there are things more important like: -letter of recommendation (the person who write the letter needs to have good background,he needs to write that you are the best student between all the students ever ) -life ( publications, awards, etc), if during your life you have shown enough skills to be a researcher then you are a potential candidate even you have poor GRE or/and GPA
warprin Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 I agree with ahlatsiawa. I've seen some students get into science and engineering programs with mediocre grades, exam scores, and experience. There is a holistic approach, but it varies from school to school. And yes, offers are made past the April 15th deadline as students begin to notify schools as to whether they're attending or not, and they're usually unfunded. Wait it out, you never know!
