arthritiskid Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 If anybody is feeling like I am, then we're anxiously awaiting the start of our programs! I haven't seen much activity on the threads lately (probably because we're all getting anxious and trying to get everything done) so I thought I would start a new thread to discuss how excited/nervous/anxious we are and talk grad school (hello, run on sentence). How's everyone doing this summer?
sayjo Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I'm actually not that anxious about grad school...I'm more anxious about my husband finding a job in our new locale. He's been looking since April.

slpfall14 Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I am so nervous. I was initially excited because it's sooo hard to get into a program but now I'm scared. I just want to do well and impress the faculty who gave me a spot in the program. twinguy7 1
DeafAudi Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I am so nervous. I was initially excited because it's sooo hard to get into a program but now I'm scared. I just want to do well and impress the faculty who gave me a spot in the program. I feel the exact same way! I'm definitely still experiencing a touch of impostor syndrome. I'm also afraid that I will forget what it's like to be in school because I've been out of school for 3 years... That said, I'm SO excited to quit my job and start a new chapter in my life. I've already befriended and gotten to know a few classmates on Facebook, and they seem like really cool people. My roommate has also been in our apartment for a week and it sounds amazing. I can't wait to join her there in 5 weeks. It'll seem like an eternity! What has everyone done to prepare? I've been shopping for back to school clothes with my money that I should be saving (lol) and trying to decide on which bank I want to switch to because I currently belong to a provincial bank and I'm moving out of province. Other than that, I've been trying to fill my weekends with outings with family and friends and relaxation!
S_Colorado Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I found a place to live and I've got three weeks to get everything ready to move. I'm trying to alternate days of work and days of fun/relaxation and just trying to spread out my errands. With only three weeks left, I feel like I can start packing up some clothes. I too have to switch banks and I'm just trying to get all my financials in order. Three weeks seems like a long time but I think it is going to go very fast!

flnjslp Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I'm getting nervous! I'm currently running around trying to get all of my clearances and other paperwork done. I got married in May and changed my legal name which has made these clearances a little bit more of a hassle to do. I'm also working a lot of hours at various jobs so we have a little bit more in savings before I start the program.
twinguy7 Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) I don't know about everyone else, but the hardest part has been deciding on an apartment/place to live. It's hard when you live 2,000+ miles away and can only see pictures of places and google map the streets and neighborhood! lol We plan on moving a week before school starts so there won't be much time to physically see places or the good ones might be all taken! ballerina18 Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I'm definitely nervous, but I am starting to feel more prepared for grad school. I purchased all of my textbooks and I signed on a 1 bedroom apartment yesterday. I've done most of my school shopping (binders, laminator, label maker, digital recorder, notebooks, clipboard) and I was able to purchase one of those purple and yellow Praxis review textbooks. =) I wont be able to move in to my apt until August 10th and even then I am working up until August 17th (classes start on the 25th) so I'm trying to decide what to pack up now and what can wait. I need to make sure I'm up to date on my immunizations (for clinic) and make sure my cpr/first aid card is still current. I'm also hoping to update my CV and start a Praxis review binder. I figure I wont have much time to do those things while in school so I'm hoping to get all that done this month. There's so much to do!
S_Colorado Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Finding the right place to live was a huge stressor for me. I ended up having to fork up the money to go out and spend a week there but I found a great place. I get to move in 3 weeks before my program starts so I'm hoping that will give me enough time to get myself (and the dog) settled before classes start. I haven't done any back to school shopping yet aside from a backpack. My loans don't get disbursed until the week before school starts so I think I'm going to be doing a lot of last minute supplies shopping. twinguy7 1
caterpillar Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 We signed a 13 month lease on an apartment we've only seen pictures of, so hopefully it's decent. Yesterday was my husband's last day of work as a one-on-one (like, EVER!) and it was a rather unceremonious ending to something that's been his career (off and on) since 2007. He's all registered for classes, I've given my 2 weeks at my job, and the pod to ship our stuff arrives on the 22nd. His loans, as far as we can tell, don't get disbursed until September ... luckily we do have some savings to live off of in the meantime. I've been applying for jobs (now with our new local address) but no bites so far. I'm optimistic that I'll get better results once I'm physically there and applying in earnest, though! twinguy7 1
slpfall14 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 This might be off topic but, how's everyone handling the cost of textbooks! I've been looking at the courses I'm registered for the fall and each class has between 2-5 textbooks that are not cheap. Each class in textbooks for my program run about 150.00- 300.00 and that's based on the used price. I know that faculty and alumni say you'll use some of your textbooks as a practicing SLP but is anyone looking into renting and then buying what they find useful?
ballerina18 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I purchased all of my textbooks online. I figure I will want my textbooks for the future so I compared the prices of textbooks on half.com, ebay, and amazon. If you think you might be interested in renting then www.chegg.com is also a good site. I found a lot of great deals, but I still had to spend quite a bit. =/ This might be off topic but, how's everyone handling the cost of textbooks! slpgirl19 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I always bought my textbooks online after my first semester. I found book price comparison websites, like Big Words (http://www.bigwords.com/) to be helpful. Overall, I have had the most success with ordering through Amazon.
DeafAudi Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I contacted a second year student and will be buying her first year textbooks, it will save me money and the hassle of moving them. Just an idea!
slpgirl19 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Make sure that your professors don't want you to buy the latest editions of texts if you plan to buy someone's books.

Other than that, I've been trying to fill my weekends with outings with family and friends and relaxation! I agree DeadAudi! I'm so looking forward to starting this new chapter of my life. I'm ready to move and start over and get to know new people that I haven't knows for my whole life! I come from a really small town, so everyone knows everyone and we've all grown up together which is great but I think it's time to meet new people who have the same interests as me, ya know? But it's hard that I'm going to be leaving my family because I love them so much, and though it's only 7 hours away, I know it will be harder to make trips home with all the school work that awaits.. I don't know about everyone else, but the hardest part has been deciding on an apartment/place to live. I know what you mean! I'm not moving nearly as far as you, but I don't have the option to visit before the week before classes and would like to have everything figured out by then! MWU is an all graduate school and offer student housing, which I'm considering but I will not be able to have my sweet Luna on campus. Which I know may be a silly reason in the grand scheme of things, but I love my hedgie baby! Finding the right place to live was a huge stressor for me. My loans don't get disbursed until the second week of classes and I've been paying out of pocket for my summer classes so I feel ya! I'll be doing a lot of last minute shopping too!
