tdevo412 Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Sorry to ask again, but has anyone actually been accepted to NYU yet? Or is everyone still waiting? I just emailed MaryAnn asking where they stand in the process of admission and if there is a waitlist. Fingers crossed for everyone. On a different topic- I've emailed SVA and told them that I would not be attending their program for the fall of 2015 due to lack of funding. If someone is waiting for a spot at SVA you might have it soon!

hillaryanne Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Anyone here have experience with writing scholarship essays? I'm applying to a scholarship and the guidelines do not provide a specific word count limitation. I'm wondering how long these essays usually should be...I have a tendency to ramble if not given a cut-off point, and I don't want to bore the selection committee! Since they left it open-ended, I'm guessing it's just up to my discretion, but I'd like to know if anyone on here has some insight on the ideal length. I've seen online that maybe 500 words or so is a good length?
paintsmonsters Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Well I was accepted at the Royal College of Art but I cannot afford it. They don't give scholarships to international students. Heads up wait listers. Still crossing my fingers for NYU.

darkerthanblack Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Long time anxious lurker... I was recently accepted to Rutgers via phone call. Just goes to show that it's not over until it's over. Looking forward to visiting the campus soon before I make my decision. Milkyways and chewgumdrawlines 2

KSuverkrubbe Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Any advice on requesting if you're already planning to attend, but you know it's going to be rough financially and any additional funding would be an incredible help? The wording of it is so... nervewracking. pretend like you aren't sure you're going to attend and request additional funding lol
KSuverkrubbe Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 What would you do if you have a not very good school but in New York (The New York Academy) and that offers better scholarship (but not a full one), and MICA - more expensive and in Baltimore - to choose from? I have to make a decision in two days.. aaahhh! how 'not very good ' is this school? And how much is the funding in difference? I think if you're the kind of person that can make location work for you- aka you put more of yourself into the city, look at the artists there, get involved, and can push your own work- then going to a lesser known school in a vital area could be okay. Especially if you're more of the type of person who is going to school so you can have time to work on your art work (almost just as an intensive studio space) and not for other reasons. If you're the kind of person that thinks you need more support and school connections, and a name to help you along then MICA is your choice. If the other program is significantly different in every opportunity it can provide (and not just name, but actual opprotunities such as visiting artists and students, faculty, etc) then I would definitely go for MICA despite the extra cost. It's really about which one you think will provide you with what is best for you personally. If you'd rather start your career with less debt but withut an advantage or you'd rather take on the debt for one of the 'best programs in the country'. I think it's hard to judge a school just based purely on face value..Sometimes a more tight knit school without as much recognition has faculty that are more willing to stick with you and help you in the long run. They have experiences of their own that are valuable and they are making a living as an artist. I think it's just all about the opportunities you see. If one school has less opportunities, you will have to make your own. But neither school is really a guarantee.
darkerthanblack Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Congrats. You'll like the people there. What's your area? Thank you! My area is sculpture and photography.
Cecily.Brooke Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 I also got this news. It feels super late in the game, I bet they'll be dealing with a lot of people having already accepted offers and will be accepting a few people off the waitlist. Yeah, I emailed Karla back asking if there was a ranking list. She didn't know my exact ranking but that I was in the second tier. She said that they may already have their positions filled from what she had knowledge of... so who knows? She was very nice and encouraging! - If that helps any.

Yeah, I was accepted with full funding to my top choice, so I'm not super worried about what was happening with them. I didn't respond yet, though I plan to email sometime eventually to let them know I've committed elsewhere-it doesn't seem like it will matter, thoug.

I sent an email to Illinois State to see where they were at in the process. I was told they were finalizing everything this week and applicants will receive notification next week. I just want out of limbo land.. I really enjoyed myself when I visited Kent and Taryn has been very communicative and helpful during this whole process which I, personally believe speaks volume of the program. I am highly positive that I am going to Kent State, like I said earlier, I just want out of this limbo land.

She taught my very first printmaking class when I was at WVU! She's great! Didn't realize she was at Kent State now.

Hamburgers86 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) Hi guys, I've been lurking the last few weeks but am at the point where I would love your input for my situation! Just posted in the funding and decisions thread too - what can I say I'm eager for advice Accepted to Bard and USC. USC is offering 15k, first and second yr. Tuition is 39k/yr. There is the possibility of a TA ship in the 2nd yr, which covers tuition + 11k stipend (must apply, I think it's competitive - every other mfa student receives one). So that means at the very least a 30k loan and the most an 80k loan. Administration at USC isn't particularly nice or flexible about funding currently. They are also known to have a terrible rapport w students and faculty, but the program does have amazing facilities in an amazing city, and they have some great grants for alum to teach at USC and travel/research. Oh and classes you can take in other esteemed depts. Bard is offering 11k and their tuition total for summer and spring is 19k. That's 24k for the three summer program. These costs do not include the studio I would have to rent during my time in LA (where I live) and pay for access to the facilities I would like to use. Super nice administration and generous and thoughtful photo faculty. The program is in beautiful Upstate NY, but I do not see myself living on the east coast or moving to NYC. I'm currently in LA and have more of a community hear already so I question how I would nurture these east coast connections. The program is super intense but they say you get more FaceTime w faculty than a traditional school. You have studio visits nearly every other day during those 8 weeks. I'd have to figure out how to operate in a completely different place to achieve what I'm evolving in my work. Could be a great limitation and/or a pain in the butt since I'm moving towards sculpture. Both have amazing intimate student communities and great faculty. What would you do? I've felt pretty confident for a long time in where I was going, I heard pretty earlier on about my acceptance to where I wanted to go but I still really wanted to hear from the other places and feel like I was making an informed decision. Taryn rocks, 100% recommend working with her. I think you'll definitely get a lot out of being at Kent and can't recommend it enough.

Could be a great limitation and/or a pain in the butt since I'm moving towards sculpture. Both have amazing intimate student communities and great faculty. What would you do? I would advocate for Bard. The great thing about their program is that they have artists visit from all over. You're not just networking with east coast, but with a very wide pool of accomplished artists, curators, and critics. If you stay in LA and continue working during the independent study portions of the year you will be able to continue contributing to the LA community. If I were to have been accepted, I was planning on staying in Chicago and renting a truck to transport sculptures to Bard each summer. Bard seems to be like an extended residency program which is very appealing to me personally. Also, with the TA opportunity not guaranteed I wouldn't even factor that into the equation.
tdevo412 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) I'm gonna ask, but I'm expecting the same silence... Anyone for NYU yet? Are you out there evol? We have literally less than two weeks for the deposit date. Maybe they are just waiting for my birthday. Fingers crossed. Toes crossed. Arms crossed. Crossing other peoples limbs. Everything crossed! I'm gonna go check my email 15 more times... Edited April 2, 2015 by tdevo412 Madhini 1
