Anyone feel that U of T sends out their admission decisions based on highest score?

That is my theory. I know other grad programs that do the same ...

What do you guys think?

Also - do you think its too late to update my resume and resend an updated version?

Absolutely send your updated resume. In the event you are waitlisted, you want them to look at your application with your best foot forward.

Social work 93 is there something significant since you submitted your application? If not my take would be to just be patient, you don't want do come across as pestering them? This is an extremely busy time for them. Can you imagine if all the other applicants decided to send in am updated resume?.... Just a suggestion but the ultimate decision is yours !!!

I heard yesterday from both Dalhousie and U of T (Advanced Standing - Social Justice stream). My last name begins with A so that may have had something to do with my early letter. When I phoned admissions two weeks ago they told me to expect my letter mid-April.I will accept the offer from U of T next week.

Best of luck to everyone! I hope to meet some of you in the program!

OH WOW mid- march for UofT 2- year!!!!! I am soooo scaredd! When are we expecting decisions from Laurier? The beginning of April??

Posted

first round of applicants have been offered admission. Second round MAY go out after the responses have been received. I think I saw somewhere on an acceptance letter that they had to respond in a month. I believe the first round of applicants received their offer March 11th! If you are still waiting for U of T you may hear back around that time. They are prob waiting for all the responses before sending out rejection letters. That my take on it. I doubt it has to do with alphabetical order or grades specifically!

I think you may be right, this isn't how they did it last year, letters were all sent out pretty much the same 2 day period. This year though, it seems they are doing a rolling admissions kind of like York by sending out to the highest score, then if they reject they go down to the next set of applicants. It is a nerve wracking system, but it might help with their paperwork load by keeping it in waves.

FYI 2 Year MSW applicants....

Hello,

Thanks for the updated Resume – it will be added to your file. This year, admission offer letters for the two-year MSW Program will be sent out from mid-March to mid-April. As decisions are mailed out, your status on the On-line application will be changed to Decision Made. By mid-April all MSW decisions will be sent out. Due to the high volume of applicants, we are not able to respond to messages regarding when a decision will be made on an application. We ask for your continued patience.

Best regards,

Angela Umbrello

Administrative Coordinator, Admissions & Programs

Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto

Thanks for posting this.

I am so excited to hear that! It could be within next 2 weeks. I feel like my anxiety is going down about the waiting process, because I do not have dreams where I wake up in middle of night and feel like I got rejected, but then wake up again the same night and feel like I got in! AGGHHH! Now I can just focus on my work and take my mind off of it :)

Glad to see that the email has calmed some people or at the very least provided a definite answer for others!

@swrk I wish I could take my mind off of it, instead I find myself on a countdown and eager for the weeks to pass haha

Sooooo...this whole U of T 2-year offers going out beginning at mid-March news has me frazzled. I know that some people haven't heard from U of T's Advanced Standing program yet, has anyone determined a pattern (if there is one)? Like if they're making offers alphabetically or something? Trying to gauge my likelihood of hearing earlier or not, if it's at all possible.

I thoughtfully considered quitting this forum so I wouldn't be freaking out when other people start getting their decisions whilst my status stays the same, but I just don't have the willpower!

wishingonuoft,

Last year I got my waitlist for UoT after acceptances and some rejections got sent out. So either they are sent out at the same time as rejections (as someone suggested earlier) or my waitlist offer got delayed with Canada post (a possibility).

haha, well best of luck to us and everyone else waiting for the 2 year offers.

Last year for me was a bummer getting rejections and waitlisted, so this year my back up is to try and upgrade my degree to a BSW with the one-year programs. Imagine...if I don't get into any this year :\ (I deny/refuse to think about that possibility).

P.S. I also find that cooking helps take my mind of things. I love seeing people that I care about eat delicious food!!!

Has anyone who was accepted to UofT's Advanced Standing MSW gotten their package in the mail yet?

Has anyone who was accepted to UofT's Advanced Standing MSW gotten their package in the mail yet?

I received my package in the mail yesterday for advanced standing - social justice. My last name begins with A so that might have something to do with it. I also live out-of-province (in NS). My letter was dated "February 24th". Best of luck!

I will add....

I will have two years of experience working in community non-profits in the role of a Social Worker by August 2015 - as of right now I have only been employed as a SWer since November 2014. Currently I am in the role of a coordinator.

I have a BSW with a 3.9 GPA (We use a 4.3 GPA scale here)

I have a BA with a 3.5 (I think?) GPA

Not a lot of volunteer experience in the last couple of years but some before I started my BSW

I'm not sure if that makes people anxiety worse but I hope it is somehow helpful!

Littlelass, congrats on getting in! I am just wondering if prior to getting the acceptance letter if your status online changed from "under review" to something else. I am getting paranoid as mine still remains "under review". Thanks!

I just looked at my status and it still reads as "under review" which is very odd. Thank you for your congratulations and good luck!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Did you check your ROSI to see if that changed. I believe that your app status does not change until much later on.

To ADVANCE STANDING APPLICANTS FOR WINDSOR U

I talked to them today. They sent out the first batch of acceptances a few weeks ago. Will send out second batch in a couple of weeks. After second batch, they will send out rejections and wait lists. If you have been accepted you will get a letter mail. For rejection you will get an email.

From the way she spoke, it sounded like checking the status online might not be very reliable.

Way to go! That is so exciting that it literally just changed!! Where does it say the "status", I didn't even know about ROSI so I just signed up for it now. I have only been checking on SGS until now.

Hi everyone,

I'm a recent graduate of the two-year MSW program at Laurier and I often check the MSW admission threads to provide support to applicants/current students. If any of you have any questions about the program I'd be happy to answer them :)

Good luck everyone!

Everyone who applied at Waterloo!!! Just got word from an email I had sent to the program coordinator-ALL ACCEPTANCES/REJECTIONS/WAITLISTS are posted to quest now so check your accounts.  (I just checked mine and still can't find it..it still says no decision made yet by academic dept). Can someone help me out with where to find this??

It should state your status on ROSI's home page when you first log in. My info is under 'Registration' (it says that I have been invited for Fall 2015, full-time, etc.)! I think they're fairly quick in updating statuses on ROSI.

Congratulations from one Hamiltonian to another ;)

Thank you!!!

Mental health and health! And thank youuu :)

New poster here...

People who have got into U of T... what type of experience do you have?

Has anyone been wait listed yet?

Do you think there is still hope for some acceptances?

new poster here!

i'm applying to the 2-year MSWs at toronto and york. i've been reading above and if letters for u of t will start going out mid-march, but people's ROSIs are typically changing well before letters are sent out/the SGS system is updated, am i correct in thinking that us 2-year hopefuls could potentially expect our ROSIs to be updated in the next few days?!

i'm not a current u of t student, however i just signed up to the ROSI system because some people mentioned that they're seeing their acceptance there first.

Hey!

Thanks for your great insights and advice. You obviously did a lot of research and prepared yourself well. Congratulations on your admission to UBC-O, too!

Down the road, I actually think that I want to focus on policy in my MSW (another thing UVIC does not adequately prepare students for). But I think that having good clinical experience will be an important prerequisite and I would like those skills. I know that in academic programs the university you are graduating from is privately weighted and I am worried that this is also the case in MSW programs. UVIC has some pretty fringe ideas and I worry that their post-modernist orientation will close the doors for me with schools having an orientation more similar to my own. I am glad to see that that has not been your experience and that you got one (possibly two) of your preferred choices!

In any case, thanks for your great advice. :) Best of luck in September!

Hey! I'm currently in the U Vic program. I agree, there is a lack of actual skills being taught, probably because the program is online and it is hard to facilitate this kind of learning over the internet. I took it for the same reasons as you did - I was grateful it would allow me the opportunity to keep working. I also had a BA from another university and felt as though the BSW would provide me with the experience I needed to get into an MSW program in the future.

I wouldn't be too concerned about getting accepted to MSW programs. I was accepted to UBC-O for my MSW this fall (still waiting on a possible acceptance to U of T in the coming weeks). I had good grades, good experience, and wrote what I believe is a solid admissions statement. I think these things were far more important than the reputation of the program in the field. To be honest, I think a lot of social work learning comes from practicum, so if you think your practicum now is solid, then finding another great one for fourth year should make up for some of the deficits in the U Vic program.

As far as clinical schools go, UBC-O and U of Calgary are known to be very clinical/therapy-oriented. U of T is as well, but from what I can tell based on the degree requirements it is more research-focused than the other two. It still has a solid base of clinical skills, but not as much of a focus on them as UBC-O and U of Calgary. I might be missing schools with a clinical focus here, so others can feel free to chime in if they would like, but I researched A LOT when I applied to my MSW last fall - legit went to every website for every MSW school in Canada, including the ones in Quebec (I speak French fluently). And from what I could see, UBC-O, Calgary, and U of T were the major clinical schools. Actually, from reading this forum, it seems like Laurier might be as well? Though I did not get that impression when I went to their website. Anyways, other programs had clinical components in them (I think I remember UNBC having options to do some courses of that nature), but for the most part, schools like U Vic, UBC, Carleton, U de Montréal, McGill, etc. were more focused on other things, such as policy or research.

Having gone through the entire U Vic BSW and the application process for my MSW, and knowing your interest in clinical work, I would recommend sticking it out with the U Vic program and make sure you go to a clinical school for your MSW to fill in the gaps in your learning. Just know that getting into a clinical MSW with a BSW from U Vic is not at all improbable! I've tried to look at it positively... the MSW program will fill in the gaps, and the U Vic program gave me a solid base of critical/postmodern thinking from which to work. The two don't have to be inconsistent :)

I doubt it. I'm a one-year advanced applicant and my ROSI has not updated yet. I haven't heard anything re: admission, rejection, or waitlist. You guys probably have another few weeks to go.
