It would be right underneath where your undergrad is, so it would be inviting you to fall 2015 and winter 2016. Crazy to think that info is stored for so long!!

Hi everyone

So, I admittedly had dismissed York as being utterly impossible (given the odds) and have focussed all my reading and research into U of T.

I've gone through the York website and will be going through everything more in depth (course descriptions, etc) as I make a decision.

I know most of you are on the rollercoaster of waiting right now, but I'm curious to know what the reputation of York is -- it's strengths and weaknesses -- and am wondering if any of you have an opinion on that? I haven't worked in social services in Toronto so I don't know what it's reputation is like and I don't know anyone who has done the program.

If anyone has insight or opinions to add I would be very grateful! Thanks!!

I can give you the information of the Grad program coordinator. He was very helpful when I had questions.

Thank you! It is amazing (and a little scary) to think of how long a memory these systems have!

So my SGS for U of T is now saying decision made. I have not recieved my letter yet but it is going to my parents in Barrie so it may come today or the next day.

Has anyone else's status changed?

Hello!

I received an email from York last Wednesday saying I had been accepted, but have not received an actual letter yet that includes details about funding package/TA-ship. Has anyone else received a letter? When was it dated?

I also received an email from Ryerson, and eventually found my letter on their online portal RAMSS, and did not receive any funding. For people who did, was it listed in your letter?

I think I am leaning towards attending McMaster, but feel like no one else mentions them... Is anyone else on the thread heading to Mac for their MSW? :)

It seems that everyone who was accepted on Friday had their SGS status update today!

Wishingonuoft,

Did you receive your letter today? And if so do you mind me asking how far it would be coming from Toronto?

You may not be seeing a lot of McMaster MSW posters in these last few pages given that us 2 Year MSW applicants are starting to receive letters of acceptances/rejection/wait list. However, I do know of a few graduates from that program who speak very highly of it :) Best of luck!

My mom checked the mail about an hour ago and there wasn't anything there yet. My mom's place is a 6 minute drive from the FIFSW building...so the letter isn't going far!

I received my letter from York dated March 11. The funding doesn't really go over any further information that wasn't in their emails - but as I York BSW student I can tell you that you get $3,000 per semester (2 year program = 5 semesters I think) but you also have to commit to being a GA and work 10 hours weekly, while tuition is somewhere around $2, 000+ per semester (around $6,000 for 1 year MSW). I'm not sure if the strike at York will lead to higher wages for MSWs next year, but tuition remains the lowest in the province and all MSWs qualify as unit 3 for CUPE 3903, so they also get wicked benefits from Sun LIfe.

Ryersons's funding package was on the second page of the email, under the heading "FInancial Support", stating the amount and that they would send more info shortly (I'm guessing by mail)? I'm still not sure if Ryerson's funding is contingent on being a GA, if anyone knows, I'd really like to find out, thanks!

You are currently a BSW student at York? What has your experience been like in the Social Work program there?

I also just got my letter from York - although mine does say the funding commitment offered whereas the e-mail just said "minimum of...", so that was a little more helpful in my planning.  The letter also says the funding may be adjusted if I get a significant award from another source (unlikely!)

My letter was also dated March 11, and I live in Toronto, for those of you frantically checking the Canada Post mail system's inner workings.  Maybe it got slowed down a lot by the strike barricades?

I don't think that I could ever do the program justice, but I'll say what I can about it in a few paragraphs: It's an amazing program, and if I don't continue there then I will really miss it. Compared to U of T, York is not a "clinical" school - they focus directly on critical social work, starting with anti-oppression and moving onto increasingly post-structural frameworks. I learned a lot about how to critique systems, myself, and the social work profession itself. On more than one occasion, I felt compelled to ask myself if I would be an "agent of change" or "control", and would be willing to risk everything to uphold these values? Our research class mostly covered standard research design stuff, but while evidence-based knowledge was promoted as a positive, we also recognized that we exist in a system of colonized knowledge.

My biggest issue with the program is that outside of our placements and a dyad-based communications class, we did not learn specific practical strategies (eg. what to expect as a case manager, how to network with other organizations, protocols around crises). As someone who was already working in the field before I started there, it was a nice complement to my own professional experiences. The profs who taught me were mostly really great.

Lets all agree that anyone who has applied to U of T (2 year) please check your Rosi on Friday and post on Friday afternoon whether you heard anything or not. That way we can try and figure this thing out as to when they are accepting people.

Sound good??

agreed!

It was noted that I receive funding at the very end of my acceptance letter from Ryerson, but it did not state specific details.

Congrats on your acceptances! One of my favorite profs from my social work undergrad used to teach at McMaster and had a lot of good things to say about the McMaster program.

Am thinking maybe uoft sent out offers to the students who they offered funding packages because they don't offer funding to everyone.

I was wait listed for York University and UofT both for the MSW Advanced Standing. I was wondering if anyone knows what the status is suppose to say on the UofT admissions application status if you're on a wait list because before it said under review but now I just checked and it says decision made. Does that mean that I got accepted/rejected? If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks :)

Yes it does mean they made a decision. You should check rosi to see if it says invited but definitely the decision was made as if to invite or reject you
