jujubea Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I haven't done any official TA'ing yet - but reallllly looking forward to doing so! That's why I couldn't go with Denver, they don't offer TAships for master's students. I do have some other teaching experience though... some specific stuff that if I put 'em on an open forum would blow my cover immediately!
-hermes- Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Autumn, it's moderately related to what I want to study. What research assistant type experience does everyone have? Was it related to what you want to study?
autumn Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 I RA'd for two professors, one a qualitative, ethnographic study of a particular museum and the other a quantitative analysis of certain web homepages. They were both somewhat relevant to what I'd like to do in focus but not in artifact. I learned a lot from both projects so I'm very happy with them, regardless.
The Pedanticist Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I've taught 7 or 8 public speaking classes and TA'd a couple of graduate communication classes. I also RA'd for a health comm grant.
The Pedanticist Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Who else got the Wisconsin interview?
anothergradapplicant Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) Wanted to keep the community posted in case other people had applied to these schools and were wondering where in the process things were. Seems like they're rolling. 1/10: Received an email from Ohio State saying they'd like to nominate me for a fellowship and asking if I had any questions 1/13: Received a letter of admission (email) from the Institute of Communications Research at UIUC Edited January 14, 2015 by anothergradapplicant

jujubea Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Alright! Congratulations anothergradapp! Do you guys know if that is common place - are you told you're being nominated for a fellowship before you're told you're admitted?
anothergradapplicant Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) @jujubea Correct, I have not received a letter of admission from Ohio State. But I'm assuming it's a good sign/they're looking at my application very positively if they're considering nominating me for a fellowship? Idk. Edited January 14, 2015 by anothergradapplicant

CommPhD20 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Alright! Congratulations anothergradapp! Do you guys know if that is common place - are you told you're being nominated for a fellowship before you're told you're admitted? Not necessarily, but it is at the communication program at OSU. The DGS typically wants a slightly tweaked SoP for the fellowship competition and at any rate likes to share information when she has it. @jujubea Correct, I have not received a letter of admission from Ohio State. But I'm assuming it's a good sign/they're looking at my application very positively if they're considering nominating me for a fellowship? Idk. My experience tells me that you should feel very good about your chances @ OSU.
The Pedanticist Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I got an interview invite for UW Madison! Have you done the interview yet? If so, how did it go?
autumn Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 Have you done the interview yet? If so, how did it go? It's on Friday. I hope it will go well; I'm pretty nervous about it. I'll let you all know how it goes and what kinds of questions were asked. It may help others in their interviews, who knows.

autumn Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) Thank you! I actually just received another phone interview invite for next week. I had no idea this school even conducted interviews. Edited January 14, 2015 by autumn grad_wannabe 1

autumn Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Are any of you going to PCA/ACA this year?
The Pedanticist Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Congrats on the other phone interview by the way! Are any of you going to PCA/ACA this year? Yes. I'm going to both the SWPCA in Albuquerque and the National one in New Orleans. Which one are you going to?
autumn Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) Thank you! I'm going to the national one in New Orleans. I'm glad someone else is attending! Edited January 15, 2015 by autumn
kingsxrocks Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I went last year (PCA) and the Midwest version in 2013. IMO they're cool conferences, but I find myself more interested in less general ones. Fandom and TV studies seem very very prevalent in this sphere, and both of those things are not on my radar.
The Pedanticist Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 The thing that I really enjoy about the PCA conferences is that they are extremely laid back and many of the people who present at the conferences are presenting the stuff they really like researching. Plus, people aren't as competitive there either.
