mintless Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 I'm so sorry Shae I am anxious about Pitt; do you mind telling how you found out?
Shae Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Thanks I received an email from them with a pdf attachment. They said they'd also send me an actual letter because ... you know, who doesn't want to get rejected using two different methods
mintless Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 :( Were you going for the rhetoric area? That's the only part of the department I've heard decisions coming out of so far?
Shae Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 I was going for the PhD in Film Studies, it's offered under the History of Art and Architecture program.
The Pedanticist Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 (edited) On the lighter side: I just bought a Joe DiMaggio autographed jersey for $200. If it can get authenticated, which I'm confident it will be, it'll be worth between $10,000 and $20,000. Wish me luck! Edited February 7, 2015 by The Pedanticist
-hermes- Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Interview invite from a school that, if admitted, would make my decision on where to go very hard!

autumn Posted February 8, 2015 Author Posted February 8, 2015 Sorry to spam the thread tonight but I have a question for you lot. If a student is accepted with full funding with a departmental fellowship but declines the offer, what happens to the fellowship? Is that money just banked for next year or is it offered to one of the other admits? I imagine it changes school to school but I was wondering what you all think.

I was figuring that it just goes away because it has to do with the graduate school at large? Maybe it's re-distributed to other departments/students who were nominated?
The Pedanticist Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 First the beanie babies now this lol what do you DO? I'm a picker...I buy people's collections and sell them to other collectors. It's really just a hobby.

"Panda"monium Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Hey Brett! Will you be going to Cornell's recruitment weekend in March? Hey Hermes, Not sure if I'll make the recruitment weekend or not. Are you going?
"Panda"monium Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Are you interested in UConn? I'm seriously considering them but am waiting to hear back from other places. What was your proposed concentration in the program? I'm waiting to hear from Michigan State as well UConn is a pretty enticing offer, but like you, I would like to have all offers on the table. My proposed concentration was New Comm Tech. What about you?

I imagine it varies from school to school, and department to department, but when I was applying for master's programs I received a full ride fellowship from a school that I ended up declining. When I called the grad coordinator and let him know, he said "ok, we're going to have to scramble a bit and decide who is going to get the fellowship funds now."
cadamczy Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I've been lurking here and reading for some time, but figured I'd share that I received acceptance from Duquesne's rhetoric Ph.D. the other day. I haven't seen any one else here waiting for it, but maybe the information helps some other "lurkers." Still waiting to here from Maryland, Pitt, and RPI. That said, I'm very happy with what happened. Also, congrats to erryone! Also also, my thing says I applied for 2013. That's a lie. My applications do not travel through time as far as I'm aware. bgt28 1

Congrats! I assume you're interested in rhetoric and phil? That's one of my interests as well. I thought about applying there but didn't end up doing it.
The Pedanticist Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I e-mailed Pitt about my application and found out I've been wait listed.
mintless Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Hmmm. Did they mention when they would be sending out assignments officially and/or how they would do so? Has the status checker online been updated to reflect being waitlisted? Who did you email? Sorry bombard with questions, just curious and anxious, as I'm sure you can imagine!
The Pedanticist Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I have a good relationship with one of the profs there and I contacted him. I haven't checked any of the other stuff.

I thought about applying there but didn't end up doing it. Yeah, I did my masters/bachelors in the area. What exactly are you interested in studying. I love the stuff, but it's difficult to find a lot of programs that really truly will foster it. For whatever reason, a ton of those programs are in the city of Pittsburgh haha. I'm excited to go after being in west Texas for so long. You should have applied! It's a great program, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a free application. I'm also very interested in Pitt, though some of the difficulty I've had trying to communicate with the department there is a massive turn-off. Every answered e-mail comes with three unanswered. It seems to be a persistent problem.

I'm excited to go after being in west Texas for so long. Awesome! I double majored in phil and comm as an undergrad and did an MA focused on phil. I always thought I was going to be a philosopher, but within the last semester I decided to move into comm/rhetoric. Which is funny since I'm currently finishing up my thesis in straight up analytic epistemology. I'm interested in minority dialogue, philosophy of rhetoric (especially epistemic rhetoric) and rhetoric of science and religion. What are your specific interests? You should have applied! I had two phone interviews scheduled with them and they never followed through either time. At Pitt on the other hand I had a 2:30 hour long conversation with my prospective POI. By the by, are you going to the phil of comm conference in Pitt later this semester? Edited February 9, 2015 by The Pedanticist

At Pitt on the other hand I had a 2:30 hour long conversation with my prospective POI. By the by, are you going to the phil of comm conference in Pitt later this semester? That's funny, I'm the opposite. I almost tried to make a jump to phil, but ended up not doing it. I figure that you get a lot of leeway regarding what to read/study at this level, so I stayed with where my application would be strongest. You would have loved my thesis adviser. He's way into epistemic rhetoric. I taught a rhetoric in western thought class where he helped with the course planning and such, and he basically insisted that I make the final paper something along the lines of "how do you know what you know? Prove it with your rhetorical context." ...they hated us. I'm interested in being the boring old Burke guy (I like writing about how he relates to other rhetorical systems) and comparative rhetorical theory. That said, I did my thesis on rhetorical theory's relationship to comedy, I'll be at ECA in Phili in April, but that's it. I'm not technically a student right now, so I don't have access to funds. I applied to ECA because the chair of the the phil comm division was from Duquesne and I wanted the exposure. I ended up winning the top paper and got put on a panel where I am literally the only person, including respondents, not from Duquesne. Can't even make that up. So....I kind of have to go now even though it will be out of pocket. Whoops. Who knows, maybe we'll both end up in Pittsburgh and we can high-five all rhetorically.
