Are there any Canadian applicants out there? I've had many great conversations with some American applicants, but have yet to hear of any Canadian applicants on this site.

I am applying to Dalhousie, UVic, and Guelph/Tri-University History Program (Wilfred Laurier/Waterloo/Guelph). My research focuses on modern German history.

I'm an american applicant applying to Toronto. Do I count  :P

Yep! Toronto's a long shot though - there's a foreign student quota. Not sure if that's universal for Canada?

Not sure. My coworker/friend did his Masters at U of T and had very negative things to say... However, he did say that the PhD. program is really good. Good luck on your applications!

Hey, current PhD at UofT. Message me if you have any questions!

An American student looking at a number of schools, including two Canadian: both Dalhousie & Memorial University. I actually think Dalhousie is my best of all schools- American and Canadian.

Thanks! I'll take you up on that if I hear back positively!

I was going to apply to York but wound up not.

I am told that the Ontario limitation on non-Canadians that was in place a couple of years ago has been lifted.

What area do you want to study?

Long version or short version?

I'll go with short. So I'm interested in early modern Atlantic World history, though my preferred narrow interests is Northeastern North America in the 18thC with an historiographic interest in Marxist/labor historiography. Think Class Matters. Dalhousie particularly interests me because of

Both programs interest me with their Atlantic and naval/seafaring promises. Todd McCallum's take on social history, his "hobo" article, and specialty in Marxism & anarchism attract me in that facet while other prof.'s focused on the early modern Atlantic World obviously provide that facet. I think Banister (and Riordan's) editing of the Royal Atlantic is fascinating and was a great addition to the conversation of the A-Rev, and Roberts's examination of wealth inequality, while outside of my specific specific specific interest, is also strongly appealing.

I want to study early modern Atlantic World social history from a labor/Marxist perspective/

@BlackBear50

I wrote a second year undergrad paper on Acadian history... (sorry I forget that paper! but the focus was on New Brunswick Acadians and their expulsion to the southern U.S.) and I found it super interesting. I have little to no knowledge on your topic, however, I am very interested in Marxist theory. I did my undergrad honor's thesis on the ideological origins of Leninism.

If we both end up at dalhousie, I will be excited to hear more about your research. Good luck!

It is fascinating! I took a course on the Acadians, coincidentally also in my second year as an undergrad. Very interesting historical experience.

I think I actually made a mistake posting on this thread, at first glance I thought Fall 2015 applicants meant students applying IN Fall 2015 for Fall 2016. I have become aware of this mistake decided to fess up  :)

I'm working on my senior "capstone" a semester early, as a third year student, and am exploring turn of the 20th century Maine labor history. I am a big E.P. Thompson-Marxist-social historian. :D

Nevertheless, should we still both end up there, I would very much like to meet up, discuss research, and make a friend. Best of luck!

I've applied to YorkU. Already did my other degrees there. (I know, I know... Don't do all your degrees in one place. But I like my supervisors.) Eagerly awaiting further opportunities to be "Yorked" by the administration. Also, I'm looking to study nineteenth-century German emigration to North America and stuff like that.

How is funding in Ontario? I have heard bad things about funding for masters degrees in the humanities. My application deadlines all fall around Feb. 1st, so I am in my last few days of double checking all of my documents... I can't wait for everything to be submitted...

Also, good luck on your application. :)

Kleio_77,

First, thanks for the good wishes! And I hope you get into your departments of choice!

As to funding in Ontario for MAs, it very much depends where you are applying. At York, you get a research assistantship that is good for one year. Your name is also automatically entered to, perhaps, get a (non-renewable) Graduate Entrance Scholarship which can range from 4-10 thousand.

The University of Toronto notoriously, does not fund its humanities MA students. In the rest of the province, funding depends on the school, Some programs have great funding packages for MA students. Others don't. Every program will have information on their websites, which I advise you to look up. I am also fairly certain that the tuition rate is the same for all Canadian citizens.

There is also, of course, the possibilty of winning an OGS or SSHRC MA scholarship. But this should not be counted on.

And thus ends my knowedge of MA funding in Ontario.

For my MA McMaster gave me a $5000 scholarship and a T/a ship worh about $11,000. UofT offered neither. I cant recommend McMaster enough. Everyone from profesors to secretaries are much nicer and more personable than at UofT.

I have applied for PhD to UofT, Queen's, UVic, Western, Oxford and Cambridge. Ive only heard from Western which offered me admission.

The only school I applied to in Ontario is Guelph. I also applied to UVic, and to Dalhousie! My focus is on modern German history and I am applying to M.A. programs.

I heard from the grad coordinator at Guelph that there is a lot of interest in my file and they will meet once more at the end of this month. Are you familiar with Guelph? I'm wondering what the city is like as I have never been anywhere in Ontario.

Also, what is your area of research?

Posted

Where are you from?

I dont know much about Guelph. Its aboutan hour's drive west of Toronto and quite close to Hamilton. It's a typical small city...has most of what you will find in a big city just less of it...im sure the transit isnt very good.

im not that up on Guelph U either though I know it is in the tri-school system (guelph, waterloo, laurier) so you would have access to substantial resources. I have a friend doing a PhD there and he is quite happy.

I think McMaster has a developing German program as well led by Pamela Swett. She focuses on Nazi era social history but supervises work on cold war era work as well. I know it is past the deadline but they may allow you to apply anyways.

I am from Victoria but live in Alberta. I am more interested in political history than social history, but thank you for the recommendation. Although Guelph is a smaller city/school (?), I am impressed with their history club/society jointly run with the other Tri-University schools. The social activities they plan, such as a canoe trip and curling, makes the program more attractive to me.

Anyone else noticing how strangely long University of Toronto is taking with their responses...?

It's really quite annoying. They're the last one on my list.

For PhD. Also applying to one more on the east coast, and I got into one in the west coast. Great offer...but I've got my fingers crossed for UofT. Research funding is just impeccable.
